Minus the Bear – The Pig War Lyrics 9 years ago
This song just might be one of my favorite MtB songs ever. It's probably a tie between this one and 'Dog Park'. I love how descriptive their lyrics are. I've never been to the Pacific Northwest, but when I listen to MTB, I swear I can see the bays they talk about and feel the cold spray on my face. Add to the fact that Jake Snyder has the most soothing and wonderful voice and they do these beautiful melodies and you've got gold. Love this song.

MS MR – Bones Lyrics 11 years ago
I always think of suicide when I hear this song. It speaks to me about respecting the dead who have died by their own hand.

'Dig up her bones, but leave her soul alone'
'Let her find her way, to a better place'
Often times with suicide people will kind of, not let the dead rest by always talking about them. They 'dig up the bones' by always bringing up the subject of the suicide. 'Leave her soul alone' refers to people who talk about the soul of the dead, who act as though since they can no longer speak for themselves, they have the right to pass judgement. They damn them in church (people who commit suicide are usually not allowed to be buried in consecrated ground, it is thought of as a sin to take one's own life) etc, and that lyric speaks to that.

You could also tie that in to the 'empty churches and soulless curses' lyric-no one knows the exact reason why someone chooses to kill themself-no one can know, and the reasons are varied.

'Let her find her way back home'-This is essentially saying to the survivors to let the person find some peace in the afterlife, in her eternal rest. Don't talk about her or keep bringing up the subject of her death. Let her find the peace that alluded her in life.

Broken dreams and silent screams'-Could refer to the suicidal persons unhappiness about their life turning out the way that it is going, and the silent screams-the things no one hears or sees. This person is suffering, but they won't talk about it to anyone else.

'Kissing death and losing my breath' could refer to a person trying to commit suicide for the first time and being stunned that it's possible and to come close, it shocks them enough so that they 'lose their breath'. The best analogy I can think of is in Inception when they tip the sleeping Cob over into the bathtub. It wakes him up, it shocks him. So the same would happen for a person who might be attempting suicide for the first time.

'Midnight hours, cobblestone passages, forgotten savages'-this could refer to someone who has been previously depressed having a problem sleeping, or sleeping and experiencing nightmares. The forgotten savages could be remnants of nightmares, or of insomnia. The cobblestone passages also ties in well with the insomnia theory.

'Lost in the pages of self made cages, life slips away and the ghost comes to play'-When you're suicidal, you can't get out of your own head. Your own mind becomes a trap. This is pretty self explanatory.

I love the 'these are hard times for dreamers' bit.

'Marinate in misery, like a girl of only seventeen. Man made madness, and the romance of sadness. Beautiful dance that happened by chance'-These are the saddest lines in the entire song. But so beautiful because they express something that a terribly depressed or suicidal person might feel-and if you've ever been suicidal or severely depressed you'll know what this means. You 'marinate' in your own unhappiness, you can't shake it no matter what you do. Things that society has created baffle you, you see no use for them. The only thing that makes any sense any more is the dark, the sadness and how it embraces you and lulls you into thinking that you're safe. There is a deep, strange kind of beauty in perpetual sadness, which I think is something that only a badly depressed person can understand.

And the beautiful dance that happened by chance? This is my favorite line. You're so depressed that just living and walking is a challenge, when into your life someone comes for just a minute-they're like a candle flame-they flicker a few times and then they dissapear. That is the beautiful dance that happens by chance. You come across someone who completely understands every single thing you're going through. They see through your soul and past your sadness-but something keeps you from being with that person or the circumstances just don't allow it. It's a completely chance encounter, and it will never happen again. It is the final insult in a dark world. It is a tiny flicker of hope, but it's just not enough. Your mind is already made up.

This was really long, but I hope that it helped at least a few people.

Florence + the Machine – No Light, No Light Lyrics 12 years ago
@ yhtrownu-It really is about when someone stops loving you and you can see it. Its right there in front of you and they look right through you even when they're lying in bed next to you. I went through this at the beginning of the year and it ripped me apart knowing that the man I loved for three years no longer needed, wanted or cared for me in his life. My lover had blue eyes too. You're right about how if you've never known what it's like to have this happen to you then you're lucky. There are very few things that I can compare to the kind of pain that you go through with something like this.

I have cried to this song so many times this year.

D.R.U.G.S. – The Hangman Lyrics 12 years ago
I love this song because I related it to a relationship I was in that was difficult, dragged out and ugly at the end.
It reminds me of a couple who have completely destroyed their trust in each other and who now are angry at each other but who stay together because they have been through so much and because the lust is still there. The silence he talks about in the first lines 'these walls talk more than we ever will' and 'i could get used to this world, standing oh so still' to me just screams silence and alienation and distrust.
The chorus makes me think there was some cheating going on that led to the strain in the first place. 'oh please let me be, accused of everything'-the other partner is throwing their infedelity back in their face. To me it makes even more sense in the next lines when he talks about letting him bleed and leaving him with nothing(she ripped his heart out, left him bleeding and with nothing but anger and hatred). Also the next lines tell it too-"i can see through your hate, your words twist our faith"-he sees right through her lies and her words are straining their precarious trust even more.

The second part to me, is like them coming back together and having sex, trying to reclaim the old times, "skin ripped up(scratching), lips chapped(kissing), he is obviously trying to fool himself into thinking that with this new round of sex things can be okay because it's so good "i wish you'd never stop at all, I wish you'd never leave at all" but knowing that it's just lust speaking, that she destroyed his trust and it won't ever be the same. It even says as much in the next verse "put those filthy hands back in those dirty pockets"-saying to her to get her lying self off of him and out of his life and go back to her own life. Then he tells her to 'wipe her lips, we both know they've been everywhere' he's just reinforcing what he already knows-she cheated, her lips and hands are dirty and they both know it and that the relationship has reached it's end, they can't go on like this. Very sad.

Hope this made sense to someone, I think I understand it so well because I had a very similar experience and it tore me to pieces, this song made me think of what it was like to hang on to someone so tightly even though in the end they will just slowly destroy you.

Asking Alexandria – Closure Lyrics 12 years ago
So first off I adore AFuckingA and this song....it ties probably at a close second for my favorite/most listened to song of the year. And that's saying a lot. Er, at least for me.

My take on this is that it's just about their life on tour, being famous and possibly trying to keep a balance between that and their lives. I really do love the way the song is written and my favorite part is the 2nd to the last part:

'i'm everything we need to make this scene what it should have been
remember platinum albums, sold out stadiums, leave it to me
let's tell the truth, not to be rude but we're all irrelevant
this music's dead with a bullet in it's head
let's wake it up'

that right there gives me chills. one of the things that I love about these dudes is that they use elements of trance music in a lot of their songs which i think is what sets them apart. At least, that's one reason I listen to them so much. but those words right there, to me set the entire tone of the song despite the fact that they come at the end(or because of it). So good.

Phoenix – Lisztomania Lyrics 14 years ago
Phoenix has always reminded me of like old time music in the fact that it's elegant, but it's still just.....amazing. I love how in "Armistice" they have a harpischord solo. I don't know, I love this band. I bet they are AMAZING live.
I have no ideas though :(

Phoenix – Lasso Lyrics 14 years ago
I agree completely with loislane. I just think of it as a song about two people who are all wrong for each other and in some cases, self-destructive since neither of them can let go of the other one.
I was in a situation like this with a guy and yeah...you can't go anywhere because a lasso is essentially a circle so you just keep going around and not getting anywhere. The line 'where would you go tied to a lasso?' speaks perfectly to this, as does the line, 'could you go and run into me?', saying that you are just going to keep going back to this person, he's who you return to, even though you don't want to go back to him. It's like you realize that you need to get out but how do you?
This song makes me feel so sad that I spent nearly two years of my life trapped in a 'lasso' with one guy, and now I think of him and it just makes me really sad.
This song really is beautiful, but the deeper meaning is quite sad.

Minus the Bear – Into The Mirror Lyrics 14 years ago
Oh, man, this song is SOOO GOOD. So pissed that I missed them in SLO a few weeks ago.
This song is really twisted if it is about kppolo says it's about...but the idea reminds me of being at a party that you throw and there's just the atmosphere....the quiet of the room that they're in.....all your friends out in the front room, everybody stoned and laughing and happy..... and the girl just walking back in smiling and the party goes on, nobody knows what goes on behind closed doors except for the two..............It just brings back memories of parties come and gone.
It's amazing that Jake and the rest of the band are able to still write songs that just capture these moments of theirs(and our) young lives so well.

'for now we're just making out with the door unlocked'-LOVE this line.

The last line is really sad though.....
'seems like he hangs out here alot' it sounds like her boyfriend really does love her and is outside waiting for her...or it could go the opposite direction....they boy outside is her mystery lover and he just waits..
