I can realy relate to this song! I left my home town about three years ago for better employment, call it ambition if you will. My hometown is very small and is in the Karoo desert in South Africa, not a lot of employment opportunities I tell you. Anyway, I haven't been back there since i left and can't see myself going back soon anyway. I always listen to this song and pretend that I go back to my hometown in like 20 years from now, I will see people's faces and although I recognize their faces I won't be able to "find the candle of thought to light their names". Another beautiful verse is the part where he sings that "Me you wouldn't recall for I'm not my former", which I thought was "father" instead of "former" and it made sense because when I left town I was a young kid and by the time I came back I looked like my father looked by the time I left. Great song, the word play is pure poetry!!!!!

I also believe that the song has to do with families getting the news of their loved one being killed in action, either in NAM or WWII. In a live version I have of the song he distinctly sings "I'll never see my brother alive again" which may refer to the speaker's brother being killed in the war, which one is trhe question though. Another reason why I think it is about was is the fact that Vedder is outspoken about his anti war sentiments! Great song, whether its played live, accoustic or in studio. |

The part I love most in the song is where he says: "I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I hope you'll be a star, in somebody else's sky, but why, why, can't be mine" it captures the the whole song in no more than a couple of lines. Eddie Vedder may just be the best writer of lyrics and music of our time! |
