I work 12 hour shifts, and I counted 7 times that this song was played on the radio in one shift. Most days it's 4 or 5. I know that she obviously isn't trying to be sexist in any way, or whoever wrote these lyrics wasn't trying to be sexist. There is clearly a specific meaning to this song. I just hate when I hear it, because it just reminds me of the age-old saying "nice guys finish last". It seems to me that whenever a girl actually finds that wonderful guy who treats her like a queen, listens to her, understands her, worries about her, respects her, adores her and would never hurt her, they don't care one bit. They always want to be with that complete asshole that hurt them over and over, and the nice guy just doesn't even compare to him. I've been there, and I'm sure that I'm not alone on this one. My point mainly is about guys rather than girls, though. There are a lot more inconsiderate assholes out there than there is nice guys. I just wish sometimes that when girls say that they want a sensitive, considerate man who takes care of them, that it was actually true. |

"WISH" If you take that word into account, the song translates as: "I wish I had a really simple life, away from everything, with no worries in my head, and with you in my arms." The song, in my opinion, is just about wanting to relax and spend time with the person you most love. |

Wow, surprisingly low number of comments on this song.... "I'll close my eyes, then I won't see The love you don't feel when you're holding me" Probably some of the saddest lyrics ever written. It just reminds you of lying next to someone you truly love, and knowing you will never be as special to them. All you can do is close your eyes because when you look at them (and this is so unbelievably true), you can actually SEE that they don't feel the same way as you do. The more you see this, the more your heart breaks. Great song, great lyrics. Very simplistic and helpful point to make by such a great singer. |

I love this song so much... I lost someone very special who I know will never ever see me in the same light, and has probably long forgotten me. The last lines really sum everything up for me. Someone else is going to enjoy that feeling I once had, and ill never feel that way ever again. I think the reason he puts it as a question is because he can't understand why it can't be him. These lyrics just bleed total and utter dispair. You could see a wonderful future with this person before, but now you can't see a future, because all you can see is black, your future is completely blank and empty without them. I couldn't relate to this song more even if I tried. |

I think its basically that he broke up with a girl after realising that he actually hates her rather than loves her, but they still see each other a lot because they might have had the same group of friends or live near each other blah blah blah. The reason he says that it feels like it's not over is because everytime he sees her or something that reminds him of her it reminds him of all the time he wasted with her. |

I just think its about leaving a friend or friends get away with shit for a little too long. Just getting fed up with them doing horrible stuff to you, and even more fed up that you keep letting them get away with it. It's like a warning in the verses, where Matt is saying "SOON I'm the one that's on attack" and "SOMEWHERE down that line" Just saying that eventually he will crack if his friend keeps doing this. Then the chorus is when he finally stands up for himself. Obviously if he has let his friend get away with it too long, the friend will be shocked. Hence the line "Look at me NOW" as in "You certainly weren't expecting this, were ya now?" Similarly it could a guy or girl that may have very low self-esteem and keeps taking back their asshole boyfriend/girlfiend, even though they keep cheating on them. Eventually the person realises that they don't deserve this and (again, in the chorus) basically tells the asshole to get the fuck out of their lives. Once they dump them, they feel way better and say "Look at me now". The asshole will "choke" on those words and have a hard time being dumped because they won't have anybody to torture. |

This is the perfect Dream Theater song. It has absolutely everything. I was never sure of the definate meaning until I saw other comments referring to Portnoy interviews etc, but I listened to it millions of times and have always seen it in this way: It's about a guy that was in love with a girl when he was young, a friend of his who he would move mountains to spend time with her and take care of her. He never told her how he felt and therefore they didnt end up together and drift apart. The girl ends up having a really bad life, and the guy spends his whole life wishing that they were together so he could make everything ok, and has been waiting in heaven for her since he died. The song basically starts off after she dies, and he is waiting at "the other side", hoping that she will remember him from such a long time ago when they were friends and hopefully end both their heartache. Haha I'm so bad at explaining things. This is my first comment on this site. I just thought it was an interesting way to interpret the whole song. |
