| maybe so. maybe it's written from the view of ed severson, eddie's real dad who died from MS. | |

| we don't even have the liner notes, yet, so who knows who wrote it. could be most of them, with wives and kids. | |

| Nice viewpoint, man. I agree, them being reborn and such. I think that's why they chose the name "Backspacer". It's a reset, a do-over. | |

Definitely not their last. I feel like they'll go the Stones route, playing 'til they die. This won't be their last album. Here's a Matt Cameron quote from today's paper (9/20/09): "We're already talking about making the next record, and how stoked we are. And we're making it with Brendan obviously — although he doesn't know it yet." - Matt Cameron on the band's excitement and ease of production on their new album, Backspacer. I think the chorus could be: Did I say that I need you? Did I say that I want you? Lord, if I didn't, I'm a fool, you see No one knows this more than me As I come clean I... |

Yes, I understand that every life must end, uh huh As we sit alone, I know someday we must go, uh huh Oh, I'm a lucky man to count on both hands, the ones I love Some folks just have one Yeah, others they got none, uh huh Stay with me, Oh, Let's just breathe Practiced all my sins, never gonna let me win, uh huh Under everything, just another human being, uh huh Yeah, I don't wanna hurt, There's so much in this world to make me bleed (believe) Stay with me, You're all I see Did I say that I need you? Did I say that I want you? Lord, if I didn't, I'm a fool, you see No one knows this more than me As I come clean I... Wonder every day, as I look upon your face, uh huh Everything you gave, and nothing you would take, uh huh Nothing you would take. Everything you gave. Did I say that I need you? Oh, did I say that I want you? Lord, if I didn't, I'm a fool, you see No one knows this more than me As I come clean I... Nothing you would take. Everything you gave. I hope until I die I... Meet you on the other side. ___________________________ Much of this album seems to have a Born Again vibe, hence the name Backspacer (do-over, rebirth, etc.). I don't want to call it an offering to Hey Zeus, but it probably isn't far off. It happens to all of our rock heroes. Wives and Kids and Peace-Of-Mind and Satisfaction. Turns 'em all into butter. All traces of Piss-and-Vinegar gone. Johnny Rotten probably runs a Bed & Breakfast nowadays. These cats are old softies now. Not that that's wrong, it's next logical step, I reckon... must be nice. So in this little gem, I think maybe Ed is coming clean with god, or his idea of it. maybe god is his wife and kid, maybe it's love. I think smart artists and people struggle with the god notion most of their whole career/lives. perhaps ed is just submitting. ---"everthing you gave, nothing you would take" |
