Chevelle – Letter from a Thief Lyrics 16 years ago
In my opinion this is by far the best song on their new CD. It oozes The Cure... And may end up rising to #1 like Send the Pain Below did...

"I now own this fatal role that lives
Imagine here's a better feel
Told to dissolve or choose to fade
Or stay here. You'll learn."

The drumbeat during this part of the song... with the soft, melodic chimes of the guitar... with another guitar power chord coming in half through...

This could very well be their best body of work thus far.

BTW: "Solitude. Waste of a man... This fades as soon as the sun sets" ... "I lead, when everybody sleeps"...

I think this is referring to how solitude suddenly becomes "acceptable" at night when everyone is supposed to be asleep....

Chevelle – Letter from a Thief Lyrics 16 years ago
I might have to go against the grain on this song... I don't interpret it as being political.

Here's how I see it.

The thief = solitude.... It being a "thief" because society typically views it as a "waste of man".... Society typically has a very negative view of solitude, and paints it as depression, etc.

Solitude: people either try to get rid of it (dissolve), just wait for the next emotion (choose to fade)...or learn to appreciate it (allow it stay, learn to control it and hide their desire for it)

================

"Lost in, a finger forced in lie. This sends us medicating through it all"

The lie being that solitude is a thief... that the emotion is a "waste of man"... and how people typically interpret the desire for solitude as depression and choose to medicate themselves for it.

=================

"If you ever enter my mind. Stay there, you'll learn. To fend it off, and fool them all. Stay there"

People are "fooling" each other about not having the desire to experience solitude

=================

"If you ever enter my mind. Stay there, you'll learn. To fend it off, and fool them all."

This is saying, if the desire for solitude ever enters his mind, he wants it to stay there and learn to fend off societies desire to push us in the opposite direction (society tends to paint solitude as being bad.. or as depression..).. He is saying he can learn to appreciate solitude and embrace it, while feigning enough that society isn't "worried about him"... (like we typically worry about people who enjoy solitude "too much")

Chevelle – Shameful Metaphors Lyrics 16 years ago
IMHO,

This song is about how people live their lives by a set of "metaphors/principles/lessons"..as if they are certain, when they consistently prove not to be... over-and-over...

"Said out loud and said again"

How we tend to want to teach other our principles/lessons... and we tend to want to teach them over and over again.

"Just a longer list of uncertain law"

The older you get, the longer your list of lessons/principles you come to live by -- but none of them are full-proof.

"This sacred chase...Brought down to the child....No better man could fail the way"

We pride ourselves on teaching our children the same uncertain lesson/principles that guided us... When they are just as uncertain to work for our children.

The chorus to me is the key... And probably the most interesting part of lateral thinking in the song.

"So why then has all my life made no sound. And are your eyes closing even though. My life made no sound. I fear your eyes closing."

As meaningful and "loud" as people's metaphors/beliefs/principles are to them -- the level of "sound" doesn't necessarily translate into the value of their life. In the grand scheme of things, their life may have the same meaning/purpose with our without these "shameful metaphors".

Chevelle – This Circus Lyrics 16 years ago
IMHO,

The song appears to be about a performers experience of feeding off the energy from an audience...Or specifically how Chevelle feels (and feeds off the energy) when they perform in front of people.

========

"Below...They're begging for it":

The fans of any event.

"This might just be the mother of all our needs":

Any performers need to get in front of an audience, lay it all out and feed on the energy.

"I live, weep, and sigh...In this bed of cement...How perfectly shadowed this circus":

How regular day-to-day life is tedious and regular.. But it is all overshadowed when they perform.

"I start swinging... We start swinging":
Metaphor for any performer doing their act on stage.
