| A Perfect Circle – By and Down the River Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| This is a song about a pop-culture hero - predator. Someone who was worshipped for their beauty / art, but in secret preyed on children. The Pied Piper took the town of Hamlin's youth. "Carcass crippled underneath the pounding waves of adoration". This entire album is about how broken society is, and references so many aspects of this. This song is no different, and personally hits extremely fucking close to home for me. | |

I'd like to validate the previous comments regarding this being about an abusive relationship, however, I think the abuser is the singer "What is this but my reflection? Who am I to judge or strike you down?" ... "You still love me You still love me but you didn't need to shit on me" He's projecting his own abusive tendencies on the likely innocent partner. "If when I say I might fade like a sigh if I stay You minimize my movement anyway I must persuade you another way" ... "Staring down the hole again Hands are on my back again Surviving is my only friend Terrified of what may come Remember I will always love you As I claw your fucking throat away" He realizes that he's the one to blame, despite the partner's loving patience and forgiveness, who clings to him despite how he's wronged her, and has tried to push her away before he does more damage, but is too weak to either change or end the relationship. |

Should read "absent flags" not "apps and flags" From: http://www.flagstuff.com/owner-absent-flag Definition of "absent flag"... For most of the past century, members of the most prestigious yacht clubs have flown the Owner Absent flag from the starboard spreader while at anchor to signal visitors when the owner would not be on board to receive them. Despite the advent of cell phones, the tradition still lives on. Also note: the celebrities mentioned lived in a time where apps were not a thing, for the most part. It's "absent flags". A reference to the elite and their unused boats - nothing more than a show of their ludicrous wealth. |

| Oh god yes! So simple yet so succinct! The black hole whether mental, emotional, or whatever - this track has no end and no bottom. The diminuendo will never be the finale. | |

I'll never forget the first time I heard this. I fell asleep, or fell into a trance - I'll never know which, but in my semi-wakefulness I saw a snowy wilderness and trees. I felt extreme age, sadness, and as I felt or saw something depart, near the end of the track, I regained consciousness realizing my dream was the song, or perhaps the song was my dream. My experience was as close to a religious experience I have ever felt. The best part: a year or two later, I actually reached the lowest point of my life psychologically, and as I struggled alone, with thoughts of death and despair, I sought solitude in the wilderness. One Sunday in January or February I chose a park far from home and an unusual soundtrack for my journey. I hadn't listened to "Still" in over a year, but as I reached my destination, and the end of the album - namely "Leaving Hope", I suddenly realized I had lived this moment years prior. I recognized the state park I was entering, even though I had never been there before. As I entered, I realized I had seen it before in a d ream, and I had felt sorrow and loss, even though I didn't know of what. I have never before or since experienced deja vu or epiphany such as these experiences, and truly claim the song as instrumental in my experience. |

Woke up it seems the morning's done Try to laugh when I should run Getting sick about the stale uneaten crumbs I feel this song describes how someone feels when they know their love has been unfaithful to them, yet how they know they should leave, but find it impossible to just run. I found you out Replaced the bone with a crown And on and on and on Uneasy metaphors Remembering Hollow and leaving Eternally I'll be kneeling The unfaithful one has replaced the bone (i.e. stale crumbs, table scraps, etc.) with something they feel is better, or perhaps, in the act of infidelity, has insulted their original love by using them like crumbs. I could go on, but the fickleness and lack of concrete meaning regarding love for another being in general is obscene to me. |
