Ween – Shamemaker Lyrics 13 years ago
Aaron(Gener) has been pretty open in terms of what this song is about. It's tongue-in-cheek but is inspired by meaningful advice he received from his therapist when he was in recovery -- which was to embrace feelings of shame or vulnerability rather than bottling it up or repressing it. Or self-medicating to forget about it. So basically letting it "have its way 'til it says goodbye".

Processing shame rather than running from it. It's genuine advice for people who don't handle vulnerability very well. Aaron's a pretty sensitive fellow. In many ways his difficulty being sincere has defined his career path(and musical brilliance), but also his substance abuse. This song is a light hearted take on figuring this all out.

Ween – Object Lyrics 14 years ago
I think Gener himself said it was inspired by watching shows like CSI in an interview. It is about murder but I think what he's trying to drive at is how twisted yet tender that mind state can be. Sort of like the Stephen King short story, "The Man Who Loved Flowers". That part in almost everyone when it comes to love. How thin the line can be between love, obsession, possessiveness, and madness. Obviously murder isn't cool and Gener isn't advocating it. He's trying to get to that raw nerve in almost everyone when it comes to the dark side of love, by pairing lyrics about murder with the sounds of a tender ballad. I think everyone can relate to thinking darker thoughts because of love than they'd ever act on. This song explores that.

The bridge is good and yeah, sort of Beatlesque. It's a minor song with a major bridge that resolves back to the minor with a major 3rd accidental. Creating that great augmented 5th note. The "shade" in "why sit in the shade".

Ween – Sorry Charlie Lyrics 14 years ago
Remember, this was written by Deaner when he was around 20 years old. Back when they were unknown and he was just a gas jockey, in the same vein as Pumpin' 4 The Man. A friend of theirs left them behind to go to college, but failed out, started selling pot and mooching off people, and came back looking to Deaner for help. Deaner doesn't feel too sympathetic for the guy and doesn't have a lot to give him. Charlie probably didn't have time when he was in college, and now he's back looking for Deaner's help, who's been stuck in New Hope pumping gas all this time.

Charlie's the irresponsible college dropout, while Deaner's the poor, hard working guy who doesn't feel too sorry for him, i.e, "just call your friends at college, wonder why you didn't stay, my boss is coming down soon Chuck, he's drunk so you can't stay".

No, the line should be "plucked a flower from a stalk", doesn't that make more sense? Also, it's "up this morning a lot sooner than I thought", not daylight. Aside from that there's a couple articles and prepositions missing, but nothing big. And it's "man I made a good piece of beef", which is important because it keeps the meter of the song, especially if you want to sing and play it.

I think you're right, though. It's about taking it easy and appreciating the little things of every day life. This song is incredible. I think I'm in love with the little melody Gener sings between verses.

Ween – Among His Tribe Lyrics 16 years ago
I think the deeper meaning of this song is to celebrate how meaningful that life is compared to modern life... because everything a person among his tribe does has purpose. Living off the land. Hunting for your own food. Teaching your own young. Defending your people. Basically taking what the land gives you. All for survival.

As opposed to most of our lives, where survival isn't an issue. We spend most of our energy finding ways to pass the time. The postmodern existential crisis. The song highlights how meaningful and real tribal life is compared to ours.

It's a theme in other art and literature. Huxley's "Brave New World" touches on the same ideas.

Ween – Transdermal Celebration Lyrics 16 years ago
Too many Ween fans instantly assume every song is about drugs. Most aren't and I don't think this one is.

I think it's about the continuation of life after death and evolution, and just being a small part of it.

The whole song the lyrics are about the changing of skin, transdermal in the sense of taking a new form, not a "through skin" kinda way like a nicotine patch. And he keeps talking about mutants, mutation being key to the evolution of species. As they evolve over time.

I think it's about how our lives are so short but we're a part of a larger cycle of life, death, rebirth, and evolution. The video nails it.

Ween – If You Could Save Yourself (You'd Save Us All) Lyrics 16 years ago
Yeah the vocals in this song, particularly the 2nd chorus, are outstanding. As emotional and desperate as you'll ever hear.

I think the song title is the best indication of what the song is about. It's probably about Gener's divorce from his wife in 2003, the same year Quebec was released. Or about the end of their marriage.

Being co-dependent with someone, and trying to make them happy. Enabling them. Really needing them to be there for your own sanity. And not being able to keep it together anymore.

Someone else's demons having a significant impact on your life. It's probably about his marriage but it could be applied to any relationship, a spouse, a parent, anyone.

Ween – Exactly Where I'm At Lyrics 16 years ago
It's hard to say definitively what most Ween songs are about. But this one I don't think is about drugs at all. To me it's about establishing a relationship with someone(probably a woman) and he's trying to explain himself up front. Or feels like he has to. To quell whatever concerns she might have about who he is and whether he's good for her. But it's difficult to talk that way when you're just getting to know someone, on such a deep level.

"let's begin with the past in front and all the things that you really don't care about".
That line sounds like he thinks he has to explain himself.

"and to think you've got a grip, well look at yourself..."
He's questioning how sane or normal she is in return.

"I'm all staged. It's all an act...", as if he's not sure how stable he is either, "and I'm really scared that I may fall back on the abstract".

And lastly, "if you're to be the roaming eye, well pry it open and let me tell you why it sees the harsh realities". He's wants to explain himself on a deep level that she probably isn't used to.

If you've ever began getting involved with a woman who starts out not feeling sure whether she's safe with or can trust you... this song jives very, very well. How frustrating it can be to try to prove yourself, when the very act of speaking so abstractly is why she doesn't get you in the 1st place. Almost line for line.
