Meat Loaf – Cry To Heaven Lyrics 16 years ago
Very witty. The trick is in the contrast. The music is gentle, with lilting woodwind instrumentation, comforting religious imagery, and a quiet tone.

But then the last line of each half of the song, 'Go ahead and cry like hell', turns the meaning around completely.

It sounds caring and sympathetic, but the lyrics really mean 'Cry all you want, I don't care.'

A typical Steinman/Meatloaf reversal of meaning. Equivalent to the lines in Paradise By the Dashboard Light: "I sware that I would love you till the end of time! / So now I'm praying for the end of time..." (because I don't love you any more).

Eagles – Desperado Lyrics 16 years ago
Come on, it's nothing to do with addiction. For those who said it is - perhaps something in your own lives is affecting your views?

The Queen of Diamonds is money or material things. The Queen of Hearts is love and personal relationships.

It's from the Desperado album, which as a whole is concerned with outlaw gangs, and so at one level the song is about a gang member trapped in a life of crime, and predicting an unhappy end unless he gives up bank robberies (chasing after the money) and settles down to a life with a loving partner.

It can also be generalised to apply to anyone following a lifestyle of pursuit after material things instead of focusing on relationships.

And then, when you get to the end of the album, you learn from the Reprise that the Desperado didn't follow the advice and is doomed to a life of unhappiness. "You sealed your fate a long time ago / Now there's no time left to borrow / Only stardust / Maybe tomorrow..".

Elton John – Ticking Lyrics 16 years ago
Brilliant piano.

In today's politically correct times, I don't think it would be possible to record a song that shows such empathy for a mass killer. It almost scares me to listen to it, as if anyone could snap and lose control. I love it, but don't think I should listen to it too often.

Elton John – This Song Has No Title Lyrics 16 years ago
When I was young, I thought I was sharp as a knife, and I wanted to know and explore everything.

Now I'm older, I'm not sure I'm so smart, but I still want to explore everything.

There's something about this song. It's over 30 years old, and it still sends shivers up my spine.

Lily Allen – Not Fair Lyrics 16 years ago
Not much point spelling out the meaning of this song, it's abundantly clear from the prosaic lyrics.

If I had to listen to that whiny, petulant voice, I'd be trying to get things over with as quickly as possible too.
