The Polyphonic Spree – Section 9 (Light & Day/Reach for the Sun) Lyrics 14 years ago
You're right on target, and should know that Tim DeLaughter formed The Polyphonic Spree after the death of his friend from a drug overdose.

The Polyphonic Spree – Section 9 (Light & Day/Reach for the Sun) Lyrics 14 years ago
I actually think this comment has a lot of value. The whole band was actually formed out of the sudden death of the guitar player from Tripping Daisy, and while the Spree are mostly all about positive thoughts, death weighs heavy on their material.

"'We wanted to capture a whole lotta light and a whole lotta dark on the same page," says Julie Doyle, one of the group's principal songwriters. We really hit the nail on the head this time; this is the Spree at its finest."

Group leader Tim DeLaughter formed The Polyphonic Spree in 2000 following the breakup of his previous group, Tripping Daisy. That band's run as one of the '90s more popular alt pop groups ended abruptly when its guitarist, Wes Berggren died of a drug overdose in 1999. DeLaughter formed the Polyphonic Spree partly as a reaction to Berggren's death, in his search for light in the darkness."

Alabama 3 – Speed of the Sound of Loneliness Lyrics 15 years ago
Alabama 3 often does covers, but they're pretty thorough reworkings of the originals. This takes John Prine's Speed of the Sound of Loneliness, and changes it to the first person. So, it goes from being "You come home late, You come home early" to "I come home late, I come home early". "Well I got a heart that burns with a fever, And I got a worried and a jealous mind" becomes "you've got a heart that burns with a fever, you've got a worried and a jealous mind".

Alabama 3 set out to mix country music with acid house and techno. This is a stellar example.

It also works well with the overall theme of the Exile on Cold Harbor Lane album. Larry Love was running just to be on the run, until he met up with D Wayne Love, The Mountain of Love, The Spirit, and the whole First Presleyterian Church of Elvis the Divine (UK).

Alabama 3 – Ain't Goin To Goa Lyrics 15 years ago
This song has an anti-hippie message. The Island of Goa is like, "hippie Mecca" and the singer is not down with a lot of spiritual mumbo-jumbo. It seems to be a little anti-drug, but I think A3 is just more about modern things, and thus synthetic drugs instead of cannabis.

Basically, Larry Love was attached to "new age" spiritual stuff, but now he's joined the First Presleyterian Church of Elvis the Divine (UK) under The Very Reverend Dr. D. Wayne Love.

That whole process is about stripping yourself of belongings, and rebuilding yourself in a world of country/acid house/gospel/blues revelry. Live music and whiskey replace Carlos Castaneda and chakras.

Alabama 3 – 2129 Lyrics 15 years ago
This is almost like a twist on Rolling Stone's "Sympathy for the Devil". Pleased to meet you, what's your name?

This song is about like, Jesus and Lucifer/the Devil over many thousands of years. It's set in our future, and Jesus and Lucifer meet in a cantina to listen to Bessie Smith and reminisce.

How cool is that?

Alabama 3 – Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlife Lyrics 15 years ago
Great twist on Dylan's "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands", which is something A3 does often. They reference and mixup/mashup lots of classic songs and poems.

And I love girls like the ones described in this song. A hard-partying girl with a dark edge. A little self=destructive, and when you get together...well it's like pouring gasoline on a fire.

Blue Öyster Cult – E.T.I. Lyrics 16 years ago
Last verse should probably read:

Dead leaves always give up motion
I no longer feel emotion
Where prophecy fails, the foreign notion
"Don't report this, Agents of Fortune"

"King In Yellow" probably refers to the collection of gothic horror stories by Robert Chambers featuring the malevolent and supernatural King In Yellow. Then I'd guess "Queen in Red" is a reference to Alice's Adventures Through The Looking Glass.

"Books by the blameless and by the dead"...Seems like they were tying fictional stories and mythological beings together with the story of Jesus and the Ascension, to make a point about myth and religion. Which is to say, one man's myth is another's religion.

Further, if there are ETs out there, maybe Jesus really did rise from the dead, because he was an alien. This story of Balthazar also seems like his discovery of the truth about Jesus.
