Joshua Kadison – Beautiful In My Eyes Lyrics 13 years ago
Just as other comments have said, this song is so romantic yet so real.

I'd love it to be played at my wedding.

Anberlin – Haight Street Lyrics 13 years ago
This song is about being young and thinking you own the place. It's a real feel-good, clap your hands sorta song.

"Coz we're old enough to know, but too young to care" refers to being on that boundary between young and old. We're to young to know what going to the clubs is like, but too old to say let's noth bother going to the clubs.

Anberlin at their best, negotiating the intersections of life.

John Mellencamp – Small Town Lyrics 13 years ago
I'm from a small suburb, in a small city, in a small country. For me, this song is about everybody knowing you, your folks and your history. Because you're part of something bigger. Bigger not by much, but enough.

The small town thing echoes not only across America, but here I am in NZ. Our biggest city has 1.5 million people, so we're a small town sorta place. For me, this song is about growing up in a place that isn't anonymous. I grew up in a small community, that suddenly became a reasonable sized city when I realised how many places fed into it. But people still know who my folks are, and where they live. Mellencamp is referring to the familiar things about our childhood, the things outsiders remember.

Great song about growing up in a little community - even if your little community lives inside a big city.

Casting Crowns – While You Were Sleeping Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is about abortion, veiled with the biblical references to 'missing' Christ or not being aware of Him returning. The real crux of the song is this:

'United States of America
Looks like another silent night
As we're sung to sleep by philosophies
That save the trees and kill the children'

It's saying, our beliefs are all wrong. We're more likely to chain ourselves to trees than campaign for the unborn.

Van Morrison – Glad Tidings Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm a little embarrassed to admit that as a big Van Morrison fan, I heard this for the first time on the Sopranos. Or perhaps this song first took on some meaning when it played during the Sopranos. Either way, superb music choices by the producers and yet more awesome music from Van the man.

One of my 'life anthems'. A sing along song, always. To me it's about not believing everything people tell you and being careful. 'Believe no lies/and realise' is the clincher for me - it's saying, take on board what people tell you but don't believe everything. It's about not being led astray by people and their ideas, not letting people put you into a hopeful trance,

'Open up your eyes so you may see
Ask you not to read between the lines
Hope that you will come in right on time
And they'll talk to you while you're in trances
And you'll visualize not taking any chances
But meet them halfway with love, peace and persuasion'

It's saying, believe what you want to and believe what you can, but don't let people persuade you with their shallow arguments.

John Mellencamp – Peaceful World Lyrics 15 years ago
This is a song about how the world could be, but a realisation of how it really is. It's a lesson in realism but it has room for hope and dreams of a peaceful world in the future. It's a dream of a simple life with no pain and no hurt, no killing and no wars. It's a reasonable dream. It needn't only be a dream.

James Taylor – Mexico Lyrics 15 years ago
'Mexico' reminds me of a guy I dated years ago. We broke up and while it wasn't nice at the time, it's a real relief now that some time has passed. Being 'down in Mexico' is being away from your troubles and escaping the pressures of real life. It's dreaming of life beyond the current set of issues and relaxing in the moment where you know it'll all end up okay.

Anberlin – Breathe Lyrics 15 years ago
I had an ironic experience with this song. I first heard it a week before I ended up being taken by ambulance to hospital because I couldn't breathe. It was all I had in my mind at 4am when I got into the amublance, knowing and trusting that I'd be okay - that's faith. It's about trusting that you'll be released from whatever is closing in on you. It's about realising that you're alive and can life as opposed to just existing. Such an amazing song about coming to life again as a result of a realisation. Thanks to Anberlin for putting this into words for us!

Anberlin – Dismantle. Repair. Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is so much about getting to know someone - "the night was young and so were we/talked about life, love, god, death and your family" but then realising that things are not as they seem. I love the 'patron saint of lost causes' as that's a biblical reference a lot of people can see but not be offended/distanced by. It's about saying, 'I always screw things up' by saying 'you dismantle me'. I love the 'it's not that I hang on every word' - that's the typical waiting for the phone to ring, love hurts feeling. It's being angry at yourself for letting another person put you under their spell. It's crying out to God and saying, 'I've messed this up and now let's change - I've kept my heart from you for too long.'

However without having a 'God' angle, it's still a fantastic song with a huge mainstream appeal. Great lyrics that will stick in your head. Who hasn't felt completely dismantled by someone they love?

Anberlin – Naive Orleans Lyrics 15 years ago
To me, this song is very definitely about deciding to move on, moving on and living beyond the influence that a person had on you. It's a song of asking questions ("is this the way you wanted? Is this the way it has to be?") and trying to work out where it all went wrong, then how to move on and live life again. To lose your heart anywhere implies that someone there meant something to you and most people can relate to that. I've never been to New Orleans but I find the song an incredibly powerful one that I have a real connection to. Losing your heart is a part of growing up and maturing. Losing your heart in a place also implies that you had to move on without the person - physically and emotionally. It's a healing song. It's about moving along and growing - and how painful that can be.

That's my two cents.
