I am giving a read on this song using a more auteur based criticism, bringing in the fact that I know Don Henley was going through a divorce at this time, and meshing it together with some of the other songs on the album. I think the song is definitely about the end of a long term relationship, most likely a marriage, that started when the partners were young and is now coming to an end. He starts the song talking about the beginning of the relationship - when the days were long and things were perfect. Didn't have a care in the world. I think the couple is mommy and daddy. I think he is longing to go back to the beginning, start over and create a beautiful last moment. I also like that in this sense it is cyclical: when you are young, you feel like running away to be with your lover to get away from you parents, when you are a couple going through a divorce, you don't have anyone to run away to. You are stuck just mulling in how the innocence has truly ended and cannot come back. |

This whole album is a breakup album - some songs sad, some angry. I think this one is a bit more reflective, but also angry. The girl he was with has left him, and is out partying ("your party dress is such a mess"), traveling ("you wake around in other towns") and having fun without him. They had been together with the idea of growing old together, marriage, kids, whatever...."the dream you sold me," and she changed her mind. "You don't know what you want"...and there is a danger in not knowing what you want because you are kind of floundering.. In a way the sentiment reminds me of "Wild World" by Cat Stevens - singing a warning song to a young woman about how the world may seem to smile upon you now, but watch out: your enemies will laugh and watch you fall. The warning is partially true, but coming from a jaded man who is heartbroken and using a lecture to try and rationalize his pain. |

I started a songmeanings.net account to write this comment, and I listen to the song as I write it. Many reviewers on here write decent interpretations, but I think many are too literal (i.e. - "its about heroin") or too abstract (i.e. "all songs are up to opinions"). This song definitely has a point. The point is that there are forces out there - whether people, drugs, LA, emotions - that work to make you do things. Angeles as a force here is kind of like the devil, telling you "I can make you satisfied in everything you do." This is a muse singing to someone - telling you they will take care of you, "no one's gonna fool around with us" But it is a destructive muse. Elliott knows it is a bad muse. Maybe it is LA. Maybe it is drugs. Maybe it is a person. Doesn't really matter. It is a force that is ALWAYS trailing some new kill. Someone new to hypnotize into their world with promises of fame and money and beauty. And this pursuit is NOT a game...it is skill. Like the devil in "Sympathy for the Devil" by The Rolling Stones, this is a deliberate pursuit. What I appreciate about this song the most is that he sings in 2 voices: his own voice at the beginning, describing the situation he is in as he sits watching Angeles woo his prey ("Someone's always coming around here trailing some new kill), and in the first person voice OF Angeles at the end ("I could make you satisfied in everything you do / All your "secret wishes" could right now be coming true). He is watching it go down: to himself and to everyone. |
