the whole track is a paraphrase of bataille's "madame edwarda"... the parts that aren't like the 6th and 3rd to laugh verses are reflexions on the idea that an omnipotent god who predestines the beings he creates is responsible for their every action. |

this is about the trauma of the virgin mary witnessing the crucifixion. it's blasphemous because it suggests that she distracts a dying jesus from his mission to atone for all man's sins....or that she would want to take his place. Moreover- and this is a topic in a lot of DSO songs- it states that the immortal nature of god is corrupted by jesus' descent and death on earth, and hence it fails as a sacrifice for at salvation : "his birth does death subdue no more" and "he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption." the obssessive focus on the mortality and abject body of the virgin mary is not much less insulting... |

a few past girlfriends have told me that, and it's an immense turn on.
btw- does anyone know where the sax sample is from ? |

easily one of the top three songs of the year for me.
is it possible that the expression 'rolling in the deep' is british slang we yanks aren't usually exposed to ? |

un tas de conneries !
the title is not translated as "find me a boy", which is something francoise hardy never says in the original. the transcription is bad, the above translations are both bad...blu_girl_4eva's comment is inane... and amanda palmer's french is garbage. |

the "swallowed my lucky star" line has always struck me as odd... is this based on some british or aussie figure of speech ?

| The Rolling Stones – 2,000 Light Years From Home Lyrics

something else to keep in mind when listening to the lyrics of this one: it was written towards the end of the 60s when the differences between the kids and their counter culture, and the previous generation were becoming sharper... so there's a sense in which this song is about being alienated from your family and from 'straight' society. and jagger did write this while he was jailed, so that would've intensified that feeling. |

| The Church – Ripple Lyrics

the narrator is infatuated with a younger woman, who while she isn't intelligent is rather cunning. she has shady friends, and an obvious drug problem. as the song goes on, you get the impression that he's waking up to the fact that she's no good... |

| The Church – Chaos Lyrics

whoever did the transcription fucked up- the third line actually says "underneath the czars is nothing", and then what follows is "underneath them is a void"... so it's about the violence unleashed by the Russian Civil War. something like a half the songs on this record were about history. |

| Joe Jackson – Happy Loving Couples Lyrics
| 15 years ago
|
the comments are missing something, that like a lot of joe's best songs, this one 'cuts both ways'; yes, the narrator is jealous and perhaps a tad self-righteous. but he also sees the flaws in his friends' relationships ("he's found another girl" - emphasis on the second to last word) and how their shit comes up short ("talk so kind"). it's pretty idealistic of him to wait for something real....

great song... but the lyrics are awfully far from the facts. the aztec empire, and yes they did practice imperialism, was horribly violent, built upon the war neil claims they didn't know. if you think about it even a little, this kind of 'noble savage' shit is really racist. |

yes, absolutely... anyone who claims or implies that there were no wars in pre-columbian mexico is either historically illiterate or a propagandist. look up "Flower Wars" or "Cortezes Allies" on Google and you'll see what I mean. |

| Ke$ha – Tik Tok Lyrics

a song this bad needs a crass expression to summarize its ugliness, so: when kesha is done writing songs, i hope she uses toilet paper.
the worst part might be trying-to-seem-down uses of slang, or the self important and nonsensical "tonight imma fight 'til we see the sunlight"... pure torment. |

| Big Black – Jordan, Minnesota Lyrics

|
this song is doubly frightening: for one thing that it delves so closely into such an evil act, and then that it was written before anyone realized that a lot of the mass child abuse cases in the early 80s were only hysterias. people's lives were ruined by this blind zeal to punish. |

no, son- at the time there was a 'zine interview where albini said, and i quote: "we're basically just saying that people should not be fucking children."

i doubt it's he's talking about a vibrator; remember that these songs were written in the early 70s in the deep south. and women owning sex toys wasn't exactly common or talked about.
a lot of people read tons of drug stuff into big star lyrics, and i know chris bell had a brief but rather severe heroin habit- was chilton a druggie too ? |

no, smallezerchina is on to something: this song is definitely essentialist and stupid. i'm a straight guy with (read 'who endured) quite a bit of youthful experience with the punk scene, and it is as guilty of crushing individuality if anything is.
"what is really being said" ? if the band writes a song that is open to easy misinterpretation, just whose fault is that ? |
