I read that Keith used to be an English teacher... I laugh every time he alludes to stuff like Dostoyevsky, because it makes me think of my old teachers singing badass metal songs...

Sorry for double-post, but also:
Red sky at night, sailor's delight; red sky at morning, sailors take warning.
An old saying, referenced in "Blood sky in the mornin'".

Puscifer – Man Overboard Lyrics 12 years ago
Maybe it's just me, but I assumed "'bout to turn it up to eleven" was just referencing the 1-11 scale on guitar amps, or more simply put: "oh man this shit is gonna be intense". Then, the twelve would represent something even more intense than what was generally thought possible.

Obviously, this doesn't connect to the themes in the rest of the song very well, but I don't think this song--as with many other Puscifer songs (pre-Conditions, at least)-- is meant to be taken very seriously. Deeper meanings can be associated to it but I think, in this case, there was nothing specific intended, other than the clear theme of seafarin'.

I would love to see someone dub this song over the Spongebob Squarepants intro.

The Dandy Warhols – Minnesoter Lyrics 12 years ago
My theory:

*the Dandy Warhols are high as fuck*

"Dude, what if, like, what if, every state had a state talent, like everyone in Minnesota was good at sex, and if you wanted to learn that talent, you'd have to go live in that state for a few years or something."

"So if you wanted to be good at sex, you'd have to move to Minnesota? I thought only doctors and shit came from there."

"... Minnesota has two talents."

"Dude, get the notebook."

Every Time I Die – Pigs Is Pigs Lyrics 12 years ago
He killed his wife, but he isn't getting away with it in the typical sense. He's being put to death but he considers it a good thing, because he's being given freedom from love. Love is the prison that he's already been living in, and he considers it a "crime".

"We're liberated by the hearts that imprison us
We're taken hostage by the ones that we break"

Here's the way I take this... Ironic. The only way we can seek happiness or emotional comfort is by embracing love, and we're forced to do so-- we can't live without love, it's our prison sentence for being human and alive. And when we hurt someone, the guilt never leaves us, because his/her pain stays with us as well.

Overall the song attributes love to guilt. We are forced to love but it is (implied to be) impossible to do so without committing a crime, the sentence of which is to live with the guilt. The only freedom is death. A pretty heavy allegory.

Every Time I Die – Who Invited the Russian Soldier? Lyrics 13 years ago
A really great song, though pretty depressing when you actually read the lyrics. Ha. One of my favorite lines in the whole album: "And you're standing on the edge holding a rose."

The singer is a pessimist and thinks suffering is all there is to life. He's directing the song at an opposing optimist, telling her that life is pointless and shitty etc. The story justfuckingtouchme posted makes perfect sense with the song.

I think the basic idea of the song is that many people can be optimistic, but it may be just because they haven't seen or felt what real pain is like. Sometimes that real pain is enough to destroy the value of life for someone who has experienced it, justifying suicide, explaining just why those Russian soldiers would want to off themselves.

Someone hug this guy or something.

Every Time I Die – The Sweet Life Lyrics 13 years ago
The singer has had an easy life, like that of an heir or a popular person or something, but the lack of challenges has made him restless. He feels like his life is directionless and pointless, but he continues on desperately against that feeling.

In the last section he claims that he's the only one who really sees what's going on, while everyone around him is ignorant of the pleasures and dangers of living life freely. He knows he can't really stay in a life like this, so apparently he runs off and lives dangerously as an awesome rock star.

The chorus has me guessing a little because it seems kind of out of place. I don't get the impression of relationshit being a subject of the rest of the song, but maybe it's supposed to be-- it makes me think of the thought of being chained down to a significant other and unable to be open to or explore the world independently, maybe connecting to Wanderlust or, really, the rest of the album.

I'm pretty sure he's yelling "I told you, I told you" in the last section.

System of a Down – Jet Pilot Lyrics 13 years ago
... I see a lot of interpretations that are pretty different from each other.

My take was that the horse's eyes are locked on this jet pilot, because the jet' achievements dwarf his own and he feels inadequate and useless (shackled old man) compared to the forces of technology in newer generations.

When the narrator talks about his source, he means the source from which nature and mankind was created. This source never meant for man to achieve the things he has today, symbolized by the douche flying over the great bay.

The horse is doing what nature has meant for it to do but it cannot compete in excellence with artificiality. This song represents the experience that horse (a natural community, like quakers or some shit) as it watches the jet pilot (douches at CERN turning atoms into helicopters and shit).

Collide – Transfer Lyrics 13 years ago
... Fixing....

There was no end
And no beginning
There was no exit that I could find

Can't tell you what you want to hear
Come to get you

All my chains would break aside

There was no transfer that I could borrow
There was no place here to unfold
There was no pill that I could swallow
I'll take my chances all tomorrow

Come and save your self
I swear I don't care
even if I do...

There was no lead here I had to follow
No heart to love you so I'm told
There was no transfer that I could borrow
I'll take my chances for tomorrow

Kidneythieves – Mustard Seed Lyrics 13 years ago
I can't believe there are so few comments on Kidneythieves!

First of all, Indian Paintbrush refers to an American flower... not sure if there's a deeper meaning.

"Mustard seed" is based on a story from the bible: "[Jesus] replied, 'Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.' "

From Wikipedia, "Lot's wife is a character in the Book of Genesis who was turned into a pillar of salt for failing to heed the orders of the angels of deliverance while fleeing from the city of Sodom."

As to the actual meaning of the song...

Pillar of salt, shaker of black
Killer of thought, turning my back

I feel like the narrator was brought up religiously and has faith in Christianity. However, she doesn't want to be restrained by religion and regrets her faith... her friend is the pillar of salt turning the narrator's back, and the narrator is tempted, but concludes that her friend was the weak one... the one that walked away.

I was surprised to see a religious-y song come from Kidneythieves, and even though I'm about as atheist as possible this quickly became one of my all-time favorite songs.

The Decemberists – The Hazards of Love 1 (The Prettiest Whistles Won't Wrestle the Thistles Undone) Lyrics 13 years ago
Here's my interpretation of some of the grey areas.

"the prettiest whistle won't wrestle the thistles undone"
Coming right after "You'll learn soon enough", I took this as a foreshadowing of the events to follow-- specifically, in spite of their love, shit gets in their way and bad things happen to them. At the moment, everything seems so pure to them, which is perhaps the Hazard of Love... Love leads people to be careless, take risks, and get tricked by forest queens into drowning.

"Fifteen lithesome maidens lay
Along in their bower
Fourteen occupations paid
To pass the idle hour"

I'm not entirely sure what this means, but I'll try. Margaret is a working woman, and she's out getting lucky while her friends are stuck doing her work for her. The maidens are lithesome because of jealousy, or boredom, or whatever. However only 14 jobs get done / only 14 people get paid / something like that, since Margaret is off clasping her thigh (no missionary position for them I guess). Or, like chapstick said, this is actually referring to after-the-fact, when these 15 chicks are all doing whatever but only 14 are really getting anything done because Margaret is sighing all the time.

The Used – Men Are All The Same Lyrics 14 years ago
I have kind of a different interpretation as well...

So this guy is with this girl. But he is terribly depressed and can't support her. Hence, even though they're together, she's always been on her own, and she'll never make it that way... it's better for her to go, and move on.

He's trying to tell her that he's done and can't take it anymore. That she should forget about him, so that she won't be hurt by his suicide...

The only thing that doesn't really fir is the "You'll have to pay" section. I kind of got the impression that he was telling her he'd kill her too if she didn't leave-- as in, "everyone in here is going to die, so you better leave." Perhaps he has resentment toward her for some reason.

American Head Charge – Seamless Lyrics 14 years ago
I don't think he is necessarily mutilating her body... that sounds to me like an overinterpretation of the violence in the song-- although it really is just up to interpretation.

It sounds more figurative to me-- he hates women, and so he disrespects and dishonors them. He gets pleasure out of using them and throwing them away.

The colostomy bag represents his mind. It's filled with anger and disgust (shit), and he's about to lose it (the plastic is wearing out).

As per the chorus... perhaps he sees women's role in society as patched-up and repaired, because women try to act like normal people. When the singer sees women in front of him, tied down and naked, begging for disrespect and domination, they look like their innate, natural selves-- they finally look "seamless".

Rabbit Junk – Punkass Lyrics 14 years ago
Life is meaningless, and filled with things that don't matter. However, that doesn't mean we can't make our own purpose. The singer would rather spend his life fighting those who would put him down, embracing the meaningless of his life and others'. A counter-view to the traditional and useless apathy many people feel when they think there is no greater purpose in life.

During the chorus, Sum Grrl sings:

It's how you pick a fight
It's how you make it right"

Or something like that.

Scarling – Like A Killer Lyrics 14 years ago
From the verses, it seems like she is recounting the people in her life who had hurt her the most, and made her feel the most angry or scorned. She is left angry from all these people, because they hurt her in some way. But in the end, she gets raped by some guy. He's "like a killer" because he killed her will to be angry, and she has given up her anger, so she "just lay"s, "quiet, not angry". Anger requires that you have some internal will or motivation to prove someone wrong or hurt them; thus one might not feel angry against someone whom they feel hopeless to retaliate against.

tl;dr So many people have hurt me in my life, but what you did is different; you took away my self and my will to be angry at anyone anymore.

However, I have pretty much no idea how the chorus fits into that. So maybe I'm wrong. Maybe she's thankful for getting raped because it dissolved her hopes and expectations that she couldn't seem to reach.

Scarling – In The Pretend World Lyrics 14 years ago
you see I never loved you
no matter how you tried

in the real world
there's no goodbye

I think this song is kind of an explanation for realizing you don't love someone. Like... uh... kinderXwhore... said, they are both in denial and putting off their problems. But the singer is coming back to reality and "cannot feel this" love. She's saying "well, you tried, and so did I, but I can't try any longer because it's not gonna happen, now gtfo nub."

Scarling – Black Horse Riding Star Lyrics 14 years ago
The song definitely references heroin, but it could always be a double-metaphor. I think that the use of heroin could be vicariously referring to the loss of a loved one (i.e. a loss caused by drug addiction) or the loss of one's self (for the same reason). So I think everyone is right. Yay!

Filter – American Cliché Lyrics 14 years ago
Funny... it sounds like he's singing clearly, but still we can't agree on the lyrics (I don't feel sure either).

I'd say 1) that whole first description seems way too deep... and 2) just because a bus is mentioned doesn't mean it's about Rosa Parks. Jesus, I fail to see almost any other reference to civil rights...

Overall, I totally think the song is as the title puts it-- everyone tries to fit in to American Cliches, and it ends up devaluing ourselves and our relationships.

When you're getting on the last seat in the bus, the place you fit into is already determined by everyone else, so you're kind of forced to fit in the way they want you to. It's talking about people being pressured to work themselves into the cliches that are already set up.

When you're the first seat on the bus, you're the one in control of everyone else, referring to trendsetters, cool people, media, idk. However, the same results end up happening, in that someone feels hollow and someone gets beaten, w/e, just this time it's not you.

American cliche = predetermined social roles. The people forced to follow are in the end no better or worse than the supposed leaders, because everyone contributes to the problem.

Filter – Cancer Lyrics 14 years ago
I agree with the Smith monologue. That's the deal.

Humanity is the cancer of the world; IMO not because of any physical disease or environmental harm, but because of the huge value we put in things that don't really matter. We spend our lives gaining material things and hurting others, and in the end we don't really gain anything out of it. What seems important won't last forever. Because we do this, we're hurting the world in so many ways, and hurting ourselves as well.

Angelspit – Girl Poison Lyrics 14 years ago
The innocence of children is being taken because of societal pressures. Children are pressured to act older than they "should" and they emulate adult behavior.

The song is simultaneously equating this to child abuse; read the lyrics and imagine some girl being molested by her father, it fits. Little girls are being molested by industry and they're taught that is normal.

Angelspit – Wreak Havoc Lyrics 14 years ago
This song seems to contradict itself a lot. It goes on about humans being above heaven and below hell, but "the devil made" us do it.

So let's fit it into the interview: People suck ass and are violent and evil and whatnot. People have essentially unlimited power over each other and ourselves and this causes pain in others. We can only equate this evil to religious symbols, which humans have used to commit and explain these crimes forever.

However, still, when we do these things or feel these ways, we feel as helpless as ever. Some goth kid at high school (which this song really seems to scream toward) is violent and hateful towards others, and if he could he would do terrible things. Maybe he does do these things, and shoots up his high school. The horribleness of what he did is barely fathomable and so we feel as if its beyond Hell (or he does...) but at the same time he claims that he was helpless, that he couldn't help feeling that way, or that society (the Devil?) made him that way.

So humans do terrible things and almost take pride in it, but at the same time excuse themselves.

Yeah?

Angelspit – Wolf Lyrics 14 years ago
Maybe the chorus/ending are from the POV of Little Red Riding Hood, while the verses are from the wolf's POV.
"Jack sweet suck you dry
Baby flesh and candy
Metal salt like blood
Bucket tastes like honey"
Maybe it's just me, but mixing baby flesh, suck you dry and blood with candy and honey seems like the wolf could be describing how sweet and fulfilling she (or her innocence) will taste.

Thus, the song could be about lost innocence, the desire that some evil people have for taking said innocence, and the retribution that the victims crave.

Orgy – Dizzy Lyrics 15 years ago
Seems a little different to me. When I hear it, I think about a guy who goes to a bar or a party or something... he drugs some girl, and does whatever to her... he looks down upon her and views what he is doing as punishment...

you're just another pretty face--- talking to the girl
in a room full of whores--- looking down on females in general perhaps, or this kind
no you don't mean much--- nothing wrong with hurting or punishing her
used to be so naive,--- again, looking down
catatonic now you seem to be--- catatonic? maybe she's drugged, or dead
so much better than before--- now she isn't "being stupid" anymore, because she is drugged or dead...

Maybe it's just me. But not only do the lyrics seem to go with it... the song just sounds like it.
