The Slip – Even Rats Lyrics 12 years ago
I think this song is about a lot of things. Mostly though, it's about sitting back and relaxing and not letting life get you down. I'll interpret a few lines:

"Even the rats know the trouble's gonna come
To the edge of the city see the little guys run
I hear spring is nice in Canada"
Everyone knows that America has it's problems. Even the rats are fed up. The protagonist is imagining going to Canada because it might be better there.

"Maybe the men up on Capitol Hill
Meed a little less Jack and a little more Jill"
I read that line as, they need less (Jack as in alcohol) or recklessness, and more gentleness (as in a woman's touch)

"Even though the race may never be won
I can lay like a dandy getting heavy in the sun
Take a love song and beautify"
-He may never be successful in this system, but he wants us to appreciate the beauty of a sunny day and realize that no matter how crazy life gets, it's the simple things that will keep you stable.

This is one of the best songs ever recorded in my opinion.

I feel like this song meaning is best not discussed. If the power in this song doesn't hit you right away, you probably aren't going to understand it. To me it's just a very emotional song about life getting you down. It's got a few personal references maybe but they aren't worth digging to far into. This song is beautiful. Truly beautiful.

Dream Theater – As I Am Lyrics 14 years ago
Train of thought might be my favorite DT album atually. It's just pouring over the top with excellent music and great lyrics. It's very fresh and unique compared to the rest of their music. There's a lot of excellent riffs too.

You can see the entire incident right on youtube if you look up "john petrucci comfortably numb". John is playing a beautifully crafted solo that draws heavy influence from gilmour yet still shows petrucci's own talent. It was a great moment. Then this other guitarist starts unexpectedly whailing these awful notes in bland pentatonic minor It sounds terrible and boring. Irritating is more like it. Luckily Johns guitar mostly drowns him out but still it was a real dick move to try to steal the spot light. You could see that Petrucci was pissed off about the whole thing. (((I know a person who reminds me of this guy. He has no idea that what he plays is somewhere between boring and annoying sounding, yet he constantly gives tips that are often incorrect and insulting. ( Once i was warming up for my set back stage with some alternate picking exercises, and the guy comes up to me and asks, "are you trying to speed pick?" No lie... I was in awe. I didn't even have a reply. He played an out of tune guitar for his acoustic set.)))

And so as the story goes (as pieced together by fans i guess) that this spawned the first lyrics on the album Clearly the lyrics aren't specifically about this, but there's a clear correlation, and i don't think it's coincidence.

Don't
Tell me what's in
Tell me how to write
Don't tell me how to win

Pink Floyd – Eclipse Lyrics 14 years ago
To me, the key to these lyrics is in brain damage where the lyrics go "I'll see you on the dark side of the moon." I think what this song tries to do, is put depression into words and imagery. While losing your mind due to the problems in day to day life (time, money, etc) You end up in the most desolate possible place isolated on the dark side of the moon, Or the side facing away from earth. In all that desolation and separation you are away from all of the things on earth that made you who you are (as described by the song).

Now Imagine this. Being on the dark side of the moon facing away from earth during a solar eclipse. I imagine myself mesmerized by the brightness of the sun. It's the only thing I'd have left. People do lose themselves, or parts of themselves to mental disorders. This song and album signifies that although a person has lost everything, in some sick way due to society, they are better off for it. Viewing all the sun's glory without a care or bother, and having something so strong and beautiful to hold onto.

I know i rambled a bit but that's my take on it. Do you guys think i went to deep into it? I'm a huge Fight club fan BTW. My theories here tie in with the narrator and whatnot.

Porcupine Tree – Drawing the Line Lyrics 14 years ago
The chorus here is so joy filled. If you listen to kneel and disconnect, it sounds like a person who hates there life but is to afraid to change it. This sounds like a joyous person deciding to change their life. this also explains time flys where the person regrets his lost time.

A basic overview ^

Dream Theater – Vacant Lyrics 14 years ago
This is taken directly from a post on JLB's website. The post was made at the end of the month of september 2009.

JLB's word's:
"Vacant is a very personal lyric. 3 days before my daughter's 7th birthday she had a seizure and went into a coma for 3 and half hours. The Doctors told my wife and I she might have had a stroke. While they were about to do a Catscan Chloe came out of it. It was a miracle and never again did she have incident with this type of situation. The Doctors never did give us a full diagnosis as to what really happen. Quite honestly I think they were just as baffled as us. Nothing before or since has ever left me feeling as distraught or helpless. Good news, she is a perfectly healthy girl and singing her ass off."

Porcupine Tree – Fear of a Blank Planet Lyrics 14 years ago
There’s a growing problem in our world. It’s been on the rise for quite a while now. Why are suicide rates increasing the way they do? Kids are getting pumped with drugs because they are not mentally equal to the rest of the class. The constant pressure; of knowing if you aren't the top of your class you will never be successful. And if you aren't succeeding then you are failing. Sensationalist media constantly tells them that the world is fucked. No one bothers to tell them to look out the window and see that, through news reports of gruesome murders, and failing economy, outside your house it’s just another sunny day. Today's incompetent adults push kids like this because they need to be able to handle the world’s growing problems. There's no time to stop and breathe for them. No one tells them that they can be moderately successful and live happily. What’s wrong with the world to them? Everything. How can they change that? They can't. Upon all of this pressure, and all of these expectations, there is the hypocrisy of not letting today's youth be self sufficient, not letting them make mistakes that they would learn from. This over protection will not let them grow into confident or happy people. It’s like we’ve put them in this box that they must conform perfectly into, otherwise they cannot be happy. They have to take exactly the right steps, or they are a failure. Heck, they can’t even be happy with being a failure. Being happy is relatively impossible. Not even being happy, but just being content with who you are and the world around you is getting difficult. Happiness is a passing dream, a desert mirage.
Don’t let the boy listen to heavy metal. He might start thinking for himself. Don’t let him stay at his friends house he might develop social confidence. Don’t let him play games, they distract him. Wait he’s not listening? He’s doing poorly in school? Give him some adderal, Maybe he will focus some more. We can’t possibly blame a failing school system that we put together.
Now this boy needs to take stimulants to keep him as mentally sharp as the rest of the world. He can’t possibly succeed without them. And if he doesn’t succeed then he will be a no body. If he is insignificant on a grand spectrum he feels worthless. Why are they so ignorant to his escapism? The poor boy feels like he is dying inside, and chooses to ignore all of his problems by playing video games, listening to loud music, and staying shut in from the entire world. He escapes into the very few things that the world is trying to take away. Everyone knows this isn’t healthy, but few realize that the alternative is death. The world has shut him away. He no longer can deal with it. There’s doctors trying to figure out what they can pump into him that will fix this, but it’s not him that’s made any errors. He’s just a kid. No longer innocent, but now a victim of a world who doesn’t know how to function.

Lunatics run this world. I’ve fucking had It.

Dream Theater – I Walk Beside You Lyrics 15 years ago
Can I quote In the name of god?

"Hundreds of believers
Lured into a doomsday cult
All would perish
In the name of God"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Justifying violence
Citing from the Holy Book
Teaching hatred
In the name of God"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Religious beliefs
Fanatic obsession
Does following faith
Lead us to violence?"

Dream Theater incorporates religious themes into their music, however they never have struck me as a religious group. Interpret how you want, but this song just doesn't sound like it's about jesus.

Dream Theater – The Answer Lies Within Lyrics 15 years ago
I think that octavarium's (song) undertones deal with the difficulty of carpe diem. It's like a mirror to change of seasons in a way.

This song is about getting out of a slump and giving life your all. Being strong enough to go out and make each day count.

I really wish i could believe it, but no one will tear down these walls...

People who don't understand true inner pain will never love this album. You've never been through hell and back, so don't pretend you know what Anger's like.

Musically this album does not match the older stuff, but emotionally, James pours out his soul.

Dream Theater – A Change of Seasons Lyrics 15 years ago
This song obviously talks about Carpe Diem, and that you need to just push on forwards. The relation to Octavarium, is that the song Octavarium talks about the troubles in life that prevent people from seizing the day, how they eventually pass on with out ever truly living. Getting traped inside an Octavarium.

To me, Octavarium is the other side to this story. The dark side for the majority of people who never learn carpe diem. Both songs are absolutely fantastic musical masterpieces and really nail down pure emotions in music. The lyrics are powerful enough to change lives. The instrumentals are beautiful enough to sing the song without words. Dream Theater is outstanding.

My favorite song however is an even longer epic, Six Degrees of inner Turbulence. When no amount of Cannibal corpse, slipknot, slayer, devil driver, metallica, or any other brutally angry music can capture my feelings, this is the song i play. Forty two minutes later i am refreshed and ready to battle my way through another day. Check it out.

Dream Theater – Octavarium Lyrics 15 years ago
The final note that is heard very faintly after the song, is the same note in the beginning of the first song the root of all evil. Also heard at both end of the album is a dark sort of pulsing tone.

Bringing me to "This story ends where it began". The 4th section(intervals) Describes the troubles in life that everyone will eventually feel at least to some degree, and no matter what we do these things are part of life, and we will never be able to prevent that.

"When we finally start living it's become to late". This song is a testament to the idea that people only truly learn though mistakes. By the time we have finished, gotten over, or accepted all of life's problems, it's to late. We die and these habits and feelings descend to the next generation of people. who go through the same process of experiencing life and gaining wisdom only to eventually pass on.

As living beings we are trapt inside of an Octavarium.

-There's my take. I fucking love this song.
