| Uriah Heep – Rainbow Demon Lyrics

The Rainbow Demon could be our desires and obsessions. If we don't keep them in check, they can take over us. Being on drugs would be a good example. Being in the rock and roll world, the band would know exactly what it is like. The managers and producers (the "black shawdows are following closely") would be the people who profit off the band by getting them hooked on drugs and then living off their fame. But people who live off rock stars like that have no heart ("pick up your heart and run"). |

It's about someone living on the edge. He lives his life to party and only for partying's sake. But he claims to know his limit--"Never do more than I, I really need". The singer never tells us what leads him to the partying or what pain he is trying to quench. Only that he has a lust to party.

A man has just had a big fight with his girl the night before and now he is walking the streets thinking about it. Their main problem is that they don't communicate. She doesn't listen to him, all the the while he has taken time to listen to her. She tells him she's leaving and that she might write him letter. He replies that he will have someone else soon. One of my favorite all time songs. The lyrics are clever and biting. |

It's about a man who had an affair with another woman, but now it has to end it because his lady (wife or girl
friend)is back. He wants his lover to know that it was not just a meaningless affair, that it meant something.
He wants her to remember the good times they had. It's now time to say good-bye. |

| Three Dog Night – The Show Must Go On Lyrics

It's about show business and all the troubles that it bring. It's how fans treat celebrities; how they don't
care about the feelings of the star, they just want to be entertain. Celebrities feel like circus performers
and that they are just a product to be served to the fans. But the star knows its their job and the "show must
go on". It reminds me of Elvis. He could not live a normal life. The fans wanted more and Elvis had to keep
performing for the crowd. Celebrities need a break too. |

| The Beatles – Maxwell's Silver Hammer Lyrics

This song is not about the Charles Manson murders becasue recording of the song began a month before they took
place. The murders took place on August 9 1969 (the night of the 8th) and "Maxwell's Silver Hammer began
recordings in July of 1969. In fact, the Beatles did a run through of the song in January of 1969 during the
filming of the movie LET IT BE. It is about a mass murderer and is a funny song. George Harrison hated the song (just look at his expression while they are doing it in LET IT BE). George said it wa sone of the fruity songs that Paukl made them do. Of course, he adds that they did it about 1000 times, so that may be one of the reasons he hates it. I love the song myself because it is just hilarious. |

| The Beatles – Drive My Car Lyrics

I think it's about an affair with a movie star. I don't know if Paul ever had an affair with an actress, but he certainly had opportunities to. He did date an actress, Jane Ashner, but I don't think this song is about her. Apparently, this song is about the time just as the Beatles were becoming famous, before they were rich. In the song, the singer asks the girl what she wanted to be, she replies she wanted to be a movie star. The guy could very well be a chauffeur, as the song seems to indicate, but there is a sexual undertone there. The girl wants to have fun and apparently has sex with the driver as she moves up in her acting career. In the end, though, she admits that she doesn't even have a car, which asks the question: what else could the two have been doing earlier in the song other than driving in a car? They had to be making love, that's what. |

Hatty likes to have a good time and has seen some wild things. He Tells Matty about it and offers to take her
out for a good time. Hatty doesn't want to be a square and not have fun. He's not really asking her out, but
to have fun with someone. This song is about sex. The line "Get you someone really to pull the wool with you" is obvious if you think about it. |

| The Beatles – Hey Bulldog Lyrics

Actually, it was recorded specifically for Yellow Submarine. It was recorded in Feburary of 1968 which was was only four months before Yellow Submarine was released. The new songs (new as of 1968)for Submarine actually began with recording sessions of Sgt Pepper. How a song was considered for Yellow Submarine was simply the songs they thought were not up to par with their other songs--B songs if you will. If they recorded a song and felt it was below thier standard, they would say "let's use it for Yellow Submarine, then." "Only a Northern Song", "All Together Now", "Too Much" were recorded during sessions for other albums. "Hey Bulldog was specifically recorded for Yellow Submarine, though. What happened was that they were booked to film a promotional film (they call them video's now, kiddies) for the new single "Lady Madonna". But once they got in the studio they thought that while they were there it would be good to record a new song for Yellow Submarine. So if you see the promotional clip for "Lady Madonna" the song they are actually playing is "Hey Bulldog". There is now a "Hey Bulldog" video, but it was culled from the same footage that was used to make the "Lady Madonna" Clip.

This is one of my favorites. At the time, it was considered a throwaway song by the Beatles, but I think some of their throwaway songs are the best. I think it's a jab at Paul. "What makes you think you're something special when you smile". Paul had a charm about him and John probably thought that Paul got his way using that charm with others. "Child-like yeah, no one understands". John thought that Paul acted like a child at times and thought his songs were more for children". "Big man walking in the park. Wigwam frightened of the dark". John thought that Paul though himself as a big man--a great performer, but he was really just a fringtened little man. "You think you know it but you haven't got a clue". Paul tried to get inside John and buddy up with him, but John was telling him that he didn't know anything about him.
Also, it was the first session that Yoko attended and John may have felt that Paul thought that having Yoko there had broken their no-women-at-the-sessions code. Up till then, it was rare for a wife or girlfirend of the Beartles to attend a session. John may have felt resentment from Paul that Yoke was there. I know some of the lyrics were written on the spot so this theory may fit.

It is actually a song in itself. It was another song that Paul had written that was never recorded. Paul still liked it enough to stick it at the end of "Cry Baby Cry". Paul did the same thing on his first solo album. The is a song titled "Hot As Sun / Glasses" where at the end he sings "Suicide, musin't do..." The song, called "Suicide" was a song that he had written when he was a teen, but never released properly. |

| Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians – What I Am Lyrics
| 16 years ago
|
I think it is about people who get to techinical when trying to explain what life is. The singer explains that she's not aware of too many things, but she knows what she knows. She is not educated and has no degree, but she has experinece life and has an understanding about life. The science books and teachers cannot fully explain life. She is educated in spiritual things although no one needs to explain a formula to her.
"Philosophy is the talk on a cereal box. Religion is the smile on a dog". Philosophy is not what you read in a book, or taught in a college; it is something a person feels in the heart and soul. Even if it is found on a cereral box, an enlightened person can unlock the secrets of the universe. Religion is also something that cannot properly be taught in a book or class. It is all around us in nature. A smile on a dog.
The actual line is "chuck me the shallow water" not choke. Chuck means to toss. She wants to be tossed into the shallow water before she gets too deep. She does not want to be so overwhelmed by the questions of life, she just wants to enjoy the simple things. "Philosophy is a walk on the slippery rocks. Religion is a light in the fog". These have the same meaning as the cereral box and smile on the dog lines. We can get so caught up in the questions and meaning of life, we forget to take in the simple things in life. We forget to simply enjoy life.

| The Cars – All Mixed Up Lyrics

I think this song is about a particular relationship that Ric had. He was known to date models and I think that the fact that he was a muscian and she was a model, that the relationship faltered. It is hard for two people in show business to make it. One always seems to be doing their own thing which greatly affects the other. Fears that the other might become more popular also weakens a relationship. The lines "she's always out making pictures--she's always out making scenes" surely fits. I think she was so busy with her career that Ric often felt unwanted. This made hi life seem ALL MIXED UP.

I think the song it talking about how some people become drama queens and let ever little thing get to them. The reality is that life is the same for everyone, we all have our problems, we just need to deal with them and get on with our lives. Ric Ocasek was known to date beautiful models so he may have encountered a few tantrums from some of them. The "Moving in Stereo" may have been due to the fact that Ric was a musician and that he related his problems to the mixing board and that he could use the pan pot to move a particular sound from one speaker to the next at his whim. If you have a problem with life, just pan it somewhere else and get on with your life. |

| Toto – 99 Lyrics
|
In an old interview I read when the song was first out said that it was about the future when robots were our co-workers. 99 is a robot's number and it is a female and the singer is in lover with her. This fits perfectly with redskinsnut's comments. Of course, this could be far from the truth, but it kind of makes sense in a far out way. But I think that the future and robots may have been just the inspiration. I think the song has many meanings. I'm a songwriter and I do that alot in my songs. I will be inspired by a subject, but the song ends up having more than one meaning.
Personally, I have always taken it to mean that this guy has been through so many lovers and that he is currently on his 99th lover, but, although she is the 99th, he thinks that she is the greatest and final lover. It's like he has never loved anyone before but her. The singer may be fooling himself as he always does when he is lover. Each new lover is THE love of his life. Don't we all know someone like that. |

| The Buggles – Video Killed the Radio Star Lyrics
| 16 years ago
|
Many people don't realize how talented this group was. Alot of people thought it was just a typical pop band, but a couple of the members were in classic bands. Both Trevor Horn and Geoff Downs were members of YES and Geoff Downs was also a member of the supergroup ASIA. This was more or less a side project that happened to get popular. The song was already a couple years old when it premiered on MTV. I first saw it on HBO in 1979 and thought is was great. HBO used to show videos in between movies back then and they played it many times. The video has been converted to film since then and has lost part of its quality. Another song that the Buggles released was "I AM A Camera" which Trevor Horn redid when he performed with YES and changed the title to "Into The Lens". In fact, he performed the song "Video Killed The Radio Star" live a few times during the 1980 Yes Drama tour.
As for the song itself, as many have said above, it is about how the new form of videos were changing the music scene. T the time of the song's release, 1979, videos were looked upon as just a fad. Many older performers refused to submit to the new format, Bruce Springstien being one, because they thought it would diminish their artistic integrity. I also think that the song reflects the changing technology that many people feared. Computer games were begining to be the rage and home computers were beginning to be household words. I think this song reflects all of that.

| Barry Manilow – Mandy Lyrics
|
The song was originally called Brandy. The bit about "Mandy" being about Manilow's dog is an urban myth. Songwriter and original performer Scott English says he was woken by a phone call from a reporter, wanting to know who "Brandy" was. "I would have said anything to get rid of him," says English, "So I spat out the first thing that came to mind: It was about a dog like Lassie and I had sent her away - now you go away!' And I hung up on him. I have heard the first take of Mandy and half way through the song Manilow sings "Brandy" instead od Mandy then immediately says "ooops".
I think it's about a person who has broken up with his lover and now regrets it. He takes full blame of the breakup. He tells how wonderful she was and how he just sent her away. Now he longs for her love but now she is gone. |

He has left a lover but has found someone else. The new person, however, is only a shadow of the person he left. The new person can do many amazing things and probably is a younger person and maybe even more beautiful. But the new person cannot replace the love he had for the other lover. The person in the song feels that perhaps he will eventually feel love for the new lover, but for now he only longs for the old lover. |

The music brightens his life. This person is a loser except when it comes to music. I wonder if this is how Jeff Lynn is in real life. He may feel like a loner and out of place except when he plays and performs music. |

| Roger Hodgson – Had a Dream (Sleeping With the Enemy) Lyrics
| 16 years ago
|
The lyric should be "to be naked in the eye of the storm".
It is about a person who, although he has thought about the evils of the world, has shielded himself from it. He is pure and untouched by evil. Now, he has come face to face with it and wonders how it will effect him. It is time for him to face the realities of life and meet them head on. He blames the world for putting him in that position and wishes they would just "leave me alone". But, despite that, he knows he must face his fears and take an offensive against it. He feels that men fight wars without knowing why they're fighting them--they just fight. No one wants to face the fact that they may be fighting an unjust war.
The person in the song wants to go back to his love and for her to embrace him. He wants to forget all the problems of the world. Everyone, at sometime in their lives, will witness some type of injustice. You can analyze it, criticise it, but who is the real judge in the matter? No one seems to care or do anything about it. We just wait around watching the world crumble. The person feels that that is a great mistake. He feels we should take a stance and do something about it before it's too late. For those who don't, they're just sleeping with the enemy. |

I think that the song is a positive song. It is telling you not to lie there, to get up and take care of your life. People will always try to bring you down then wonder why they can't get into your life. The person in the song won't allow people to bring him down. He goes about his business making his life better and making things happen for himself. There will always be problems, something to fix in your life, but you don't have to let them bring you down. You can always do something about it. |

| The Monkees – Porpoise Song (Theme from Head) Lyrics
| 16 years ago
|
Even if the Monkees did not write the song, I'm sure they communicated with the song writers how their lives were at the time. They movie HEAD in which this songs comes from was going to be a new direction for the band. They wanted to drop their prefabricated image and adopt a more serious aproach. Much of the movie has scences that related to this change.
"A face, a voice, an overdub has no choice
And it cannot rejoice" The executives did not take them serious. The band were just objects to make money from. An overdub has no choice--they flet they were just hired hands recording for the executives. "But the porpoise is laughing good-bye, good-bye
good-bye, good-bye, good-bye" The porpoise is the audience, the fans. The fans were the ones who really enjoyed the band and the Monkees were thanking them and saying goodbye because they were leaving their prefabricated image. "Riding the backs of giraffes for laughs is alright for a while" means that the Monkees were doing the silly things (their tv show) for the fans for however long it lasted. They say goodbye several times in this song to show that the old Monkees were going and a the new Monkees were coming.
Some may argue that the movie was just as silly as the show, but most would have to admit that they were at least trying to change their image. One of the first scenes of the movie shows a military man blasting another man in the head with a pistol. This was actual vietnam footage and was real. The movie, even though tame by today's standards, was actually one of the first movies to garner a R rating.
