Radiohead – Decks Dark Lyrics | 8 years ago |
I think the spaceship is a vinyl record… why else would it be called ‘Decks Dark’? Turntables! Reread the lyrics in this context and it has yet another meaning; as music fans, we all worship great music and kneel before its power. This is just as much about one’s intimate experience with music as it is imagining others experiencing their music, alternatively. He is both the alien ‘spacecraft’ and the ‘helpless to resist’. From this pov, it’s an ode to those who bury themselves in music, and allow it to take them away. You ‘cover your ears’ with headphones.. a face in the glass could easily be a bandmate in the studio, haha. I think the ‘alien’ thread running through the album is Thom consciously trying to flip around the ‘alienating’ label that is constantly pasted on him in a sardonic, satirical way; ‘Desert Island Disk’ does it even more literally—another reference to vinyl. The album is just a broad, beautifully maximalist stroke, which starkly contrasts the pure musicianship of say, ‘In Rainbows’. I hope it's not their farewell. |

It makes too much sense, I agree. |

another little add-on, perhaps 'shed' is meant to be a replacement for 'shag'.. you're suffocating, you need a good shag / gimme head. just an idea if you think there are many layers to the lyrics. but man, i love that kind of word-morphing type thing.. it adds SO much depth. i think all the possible meanings are 'it'.. and all the songs are very multidimensional that way. it all kicks ass, and inspires the fuck out of me. ^_^ |

Every time I listen to it.. it makes me think that the mouth he's talking about isn't on her face, if you catch my drift. He's too lazy to go down on her, and he's 'already gone'. "Hey you know me, and I know you." And then he calls her a 'slag' which is apparently british slang for a slut. It could be all a big dirty joke, or a commentary on the whole male chauvinist / selfish asshole manly douche thing, or he really just hates going down on women/her.. and if he's already gotten his fill then she's a 'slag' for asking for it. It's like.. 'Oh c'mon baby, your pussy is a mile away, don't be such a slut.' And then 'Hey, you know me', as if that validates his attitude, 'and I know you', (you're a slag, lol) more excuses. If there's anything to interpret from the tone of the song, it's that he's pretty angry.. but that sense of humor is always hiding in the shadows somewhere. Honestly, I'm glad that the intent of it (and so many other Pixies songs) is left a mystery. Ambiguity is what allows insanely awesome songs like this mean so many things to so many people. =) |

just a little add-on, i think that the first time he says 'dead', it's probably a pun on 'gimme head'. man this stuff is so layered with meanings.. fucking amazing. i agree with what you've all been saying. =) |
