Oasis – Stand By Me Lyrics 13 years ago
Oasis is my favorite band, and this is probably my second favorite song by them besides Live Forever. This is also one of my favorite songs of all time.

Yes, you can hear a bit of pain in Liam's voice.....I think it's from the cigarettes :) but this song is pretty self-explanatory. Doesn't mean it's a bad song, though. This song helped me through a lot going through my school years. One of the most underrated songs ever.

Led Zeppelin – Ten Years Gone Lyrics 13 years ago
Been raised on Zeppelin since I was a young'n, from my dad's old cassette tapes.

This is my favorite song by them - the guitar solo is just so smooth, the melody is absolutely beautiful. The lyrics are heart-wrenching as well. I love Led Zeppelin. This reminds me of a cool, autumn day where the leaves are falling.

If I was depressed, I would probably kill myself too if I was listening to this shit. Or anything "metalcore".

Listen to black metal. C'mon, you kids are the next generation, don't fuck this up.

Pavement – Gold Soundz Lyrics 13 years ago
This is my favorite song.

Well, it's tied with "Live Forever" by Oasis, "A Perfect Sonnet" by Bright Eyes, "In My Life" by The Beatles, and "Philosophy" by Ben Folds Five.

Anyway, I believe the song to be about normal people getting older, or going through their mid-life cris(es).

"Is it a crisis or a boring change?"

To me, the entire first two verses and choruses are like two people trying to make their normal, average lives seem special, or different ("Keep my address to myself because it's secret"), as they get older. The final verse, one of my favorites in any song, just talks about normal empty people and the real emotions that are going on to connect them. Married couples, people that are longing. I don't think SM literally means "That I won't EAT you when I'm gone", I believe he's speaking figuratively, as with most other Pavement songs. I honestly thought it said "Need" as well. In the end, I think it's just a tune about a normal, married couple getting older and going through all the emotions that come with conforming. Think about it - they're no longer young, they have a house, kids, job, their dreams died, they're bored all the time ("And if I go there, I won't stay there, because I'm sitting here too long") and now at the age where they waste so much time taking everything so seriously ("And I've been wasted, advocating that word for the last word, last words come up all you've got to waste").

And yet, the music and lyrics still make it seem so spectacular, so happy. Go back to those Gold Sounds - your youth, your freedom. That's what makes this song so god damn incredible to me.

Guster – All The Way Up To Heaven Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this song is actually sarcastic, perhaps spotlighting fear of an afterlife, fear of eternity/forever, the idea of time going on and on with no end in sight.....

It seems to make sense from a human standpoint, with the sounds they're producing and octaves they keep reaching in this song.

La Roux – Bulletproof Lyrics 14 years ago
I actually think that, for some reason, this song has a secret underlying message about fighting back against the government or any form of authority after being controlled by it for so long. Anarchy, so to say. I know one comment above has a quote from La Roux stating that this song is looking at really any situation in life, usually recurring situations....

....So why not governmental situations? Just my two cents. You don't have to take this comment seriously if you don't have to, I don't expect the "message" I "found" in this song to be drilled into anyone's brains.

Ben Folds – Still Fighting It Lyrics 14 years ago
Everybody knows
It sucks to grow up
And everybody does
It's so weird to be back here
Let me tell you what
The years go on and
We're still fighting it, we're still fighting it
You'll try and try and one day you'll fly
Away from me

This applies especially as a teen....lemme tell all you young folks out there, if your dad is still around or there for you, embrace him and learn from him while you can. Because if my dad could have written a song for me, it probably would be this one. This is one of the few songs that ever made me cry, because not only is it such an honest, heartfelt song, but it makes me think about how much my parents love me. It may sound cheesy, yadda yadda, say what you want, but your parents really do love you. Just love em and enjoy em while they're here....

Ben Folds Five – Missing The War Lyrics 14 years ago
Besides Brick, which I remembered from the radio as a child, this was my first true Ben Folds/Ben Folds Five song, and I honestly find this to be one of the most heartfelt songs I've ever heard.

Many of the interpretations above drift towards love, being single, marriage, etc, especially with the advent of amateurboy's interpretation nearly 8 years ago already. However, I'm going to side with a few of the other interpretations and not decipher this song so deeply--I believe the song is literally about what it says it is about; Missing the War. I believe Ben has said in an interview or a few that the song is about this, however I may be very wrong.

All is quiet, his tired eyes
See figures jotted down
And clothes all strewn around the bedroom floor
Now nothing's adding up
And nothing's making sense
She's sleeping like a baby
She doesn't know he wasn't meant for this

In the army, life has order. Soldiers have a set schedule and lives that are, for the most part, planned out. The protagonist of the song obviously is home from war and is suffering from culture shock--loss of order, nothing as adding up, nothing making sense, clothes everywhere in a mess. The figures he sees could pertain to images of war, or maybe even a reference to Rorschach tests from therapy. The girl he is with, he's used to not getting good sleep and always being alert in a war zone, and seeing her sleeping normally like a baby irks him. She doesn't know how much this really bothers the protagonist.

I'm missing the war
I'm missing the war, all night
Missing the war
I'm missing the war

The chorus reinforces his pain. For most of us, our emotional plights hit us the hardest at night.

He drove home again
Pissed and beaten
It's really no big deal
It happens all the time
It's no big deal

"Pissed and beaten" I would assume is drunk and weary from a long night of drinking. With his life having fallen apart the way it did, it's no surprise that he turned to drinking and comes home just about every night drunk. However, it's no big deal--it happens all the time.

Till beads of sunlight hit me in the morning--he has to wake up and start a new day again, hiding his pain.

So much time so little to say--much time has passed since the war and will continue to pass, and he will continue to keep his pain in, as there is not much he can do about his situation other than to nod and say yes to make it through life.

Time may fly
And dreams may die
The shaking voice that tells him go
Still thinks he might
He knows he won't

Time will continue to go on, and after all he has been through and seen, obviously his hopes and dreams have been broken in many ways. The voice telling him to "go" is either asking him to go back to the war, to which he knows he cannot for one reason or another, or is telling him to continue to pursue his dreams and aspirations, to which they are null and void, hopeless, and he can never really be happy anyway.

Oasis – Don't Look Back in Anger Lyrics 14 years ago
This song could quite possibly be my favorite song. After knowing it for years and then seeing the man himself perform a heartwarming acoustic version live, I gave it a lot of thought.

A lot of previous posters on here are correct, I believe the song deals with moving forward and not dwelling upon the past. Simply put: the past is the past, you can't change it. You can only learn from it. Everything in life is a learning lesson, not a regret. "Don't Look Back in Anger" could just be shortened to "No Regrets". You learn from the mistakes you made.

Slip inside the eye of your mind
Don't you know you might find
A better place to play
You said that you'd never been
But all the things that you've seen
Slowly fade away

This is a tough verse to decipher, but I have a feeling it's directed at youth. I'm 17 as of the time I'm writing this comment (February 18th, 2010), and I can understand this from a young standpoint--kids not thinking, not using their heads. I believe this verse is asking kids to actually use their brains for once, use their heads for something good and think, utilize their smarts, because eventually all the time they spent fucking around and all the people they did it with and all the good times they had are gonna slowly fade away anyway. "All the things that you've seen"--your whole life a joke.

So I start a revolution from my bed
'cause you said the brains I have went to my head
Step outside 'cause summertime's in bloom
Stand up beside the fireplace
Take that look from off you face
You ain't ever gonna burn my heart out

This is doing something about it....with a "fuck everyone" attitude. Obvious Lennon reference. The summertime line, something great is starting, step outside and do something....etc. Take that look from of your face, you ain't ever gonna burn my heart out....basically, fuck you, I'm gonna live out my dreams, not to please you. Pretty sure this is still youth speaking.

And so Sally can wait
She knows it's too late
As we're walking on by
Her soul slides away
But don't look back in anger
I heard you say

I think the chorus is just a generalization for those who screwed around.....Sally is just a symbol of wasted potential, wasted youth, watching her friends walk by, her dreams fade, everything leave her, but she doesn't look back in anger.....no regrets.

Take me to the place where you go
Where nobody knows
If it's night or day
Please don't put your life in the hands
Of a rock and roll band
Who'll throw it all away

The rock and roll band line is a tried and true line that needs no explanation, but I dunno about the rest of that verse.....

And basically, the rest of the song reinforces the idea of no regrets. It asks the young to make the most of themselves, and the old to move on without looking back. I honestly think this is one of the most perfect songs ever written.

Creed – My Sacrifice Lyrics 14 years ago
As said before, I find this song to honestly be about whatever you want it to be, however my interpretation is a more personal one--depression.

I believe this song is about a man who is finally overcoming a tough bout of depression, and feeling himself again, as well as loving himself again. Just as TheBigMattowski said, self-love is an important part of happiness, and depression and anxiety can both rob you of your self esteem. After beating this depression, the character in the song feels even more alive. He feels himself again, and loves himself to the point where his relationship with himself feels like it is dominating over any other friendship. Again, while this may seem like an exaggeration, coming back from a long bout of depression makes everything seem so much better. He's saying "my sacrifice" as to remind the reader of how when he was depressed, he sacrificed the one thing he perhaps needed the most--self-love.

Anyway, I'm glad Creed has reunited. I'd like to say that they are NOT a Christian band, although Scott Stapp admits to being a Christian. I myself am not a Christian, but so be it. I respect people's beliefs, and these guys were my favorite band when I was a little kid. I'm 16 now, and the favorite band moniker has since been passed on to Radiohead, but Creed still holds a special place in my heart. I saw them last night in concert in Hershey, Pennsylvania and it was marvelous. This was the last song they played, and because this song hits such a personal note with me and the fireworks on stage were great, plus it felt like I was 8 years old all over again.....it moved me to tears. Literally. Great song by a great band.

Radiohead – I Am Citizen Insane Lyrics 14 years ago
I believe this song to be about someone who has comfortably worked their way into just being an average citizen of society, but while living in this average, comfortable existence, they're afraid to face their fears, paranoia, and feelings deep down inside that bother them. As a consequence, they just run away.

Sick beat this song has, by the way.

Oasis – The Nature Of Reality Lyrics 15 years ago
I honestly think this song is defined by its title. The nature of what you call "reality" could just be an illusion--the very fragile fabric of reality could not be real at all. People turn to God and religion as an explanation of why we're here, where we're going and where we've been, but we really don't know. This could all be part of some bigger part of thinking or existence or something that we can't even understand with our tiny human brains.

Contrary to popular belief, it does NOT take drugs to realize this shit. It can certainly make your head hurt if you make it complex enough, but the concept of this idea, as a whole, is easy to understand.

Billy Joel – Tomorrow Is Today Lyrics 15 years ago
Such a damn beautiful song. I can relate, as for a while I had a fear of time passing and getting older, and people always told me to live in the moment, and yet that moment would eventually pass and become a memory anyway. I'm glad I finally got over that, though. His voice is so young and delicate in this song, as well....hard to believe this was a suicide note. Regardless, glad Billy Joel is still with us today.

Bright Eyes – A Perfect Sonnet Lyrics 15 years ago
Okay, lemme try and break this down. I believe that this song can be interpreted in two ways:

One way has been stated before on this board; how Conor, or whoever else is intended to narrate the song is out of love and feeling jealous/angry towards those in love, because he knows that love does not last (People may argue about that statement with examples of lifelong marriages, but the feelings certainly go away to some extent. Times have changed.).

But I believe that lovers should be tied together
And thrown into the ocean in the worst of weather
And left there to drown
Left there to drown in their innocence

Singing, I believe that lovers should be chained together
And thrown into a fire with their songs and letters
And left there to burn
Left there to burn in their arrogance

In these lines, Conor express how if lovers are so in love, that they should just die together, in their innocence (for being simply in love and not knowing any better), and in their arrogance (for thinking that their love is the real thing and they ignore the world around them). These lines also show his anger and bitterness.

But once you knew a girl and you named her Lover
And danced with her in kitchens through the greenest summer
But autumn came, she disappeared, you don't remember
Where she said she was going to

This is arguably the girl that Conor broke up with, or lost, causing him to now feel bitter about love. Trust me--summer romances are hard to keep together once summer's over. And yet, they can be so good.

Now I believe that lovers should be draped in flowers
And laid entwined together on a bed of clover
And left there to sleep
Left there to dream of their happiness

This part obviously comes after the climax of the song where it all builds up, Conor's emotions being at a full boil. He finally calms down, and I guess accepts that love does not last, and that lovers aren't doing anything wrong--and they eventually realize their faults in time, and his wishes towards those in love change from aggressive and bitter to more peaceful and fitting--

Either lovers should die together so that their love becomes timeless (coming from the funeral interpretation), or that they can sleep (not in the dirty way!) together, and dream of their love, because everything is perfect only in dreams.

Now, another interpretation I have that somewhat intertwines with the latter is that Conor is having bad feelings about how time fast goes, and how life should be lived.

Lately I've been wishing I had one desire
Something that would make me never want another
Something that would make it so that nothing matters
All would be clear then
But I guess I'll have to settle for a few brief moments
And watch all dissolve into a single second
And try to write it down into a perfect sonnet
Or one foolish line

Perhaps he needs something (even love?) to take the idea of time passing and him getting older off of his mind, or how good feelings only last for a few seconds.

Because that's all that you'll get so you'll have to accept
You are here and then you're gone

He's either telling us this, or he's telling himself. Or both. Either way, he has to accept that life goes fast....one second you're here, and the next you're dead. Therefore, you have to make the best of what you have.

But as for me, I'm coming to the final chapter
I read all of the pages and there's still no answer

He is perhaps thinking and worrying too much about silly things, maybe over-analyzing life and not receiving the answers he wants to receive, or not hearing what he wants to hear.

Only all that was before I know must soon come after
That's the only way it can be

This is either about the passing time or about love, or about both, how love, or life is always on the road to becoming a past memory. Something always ends and then becomes a memory, ushering in whatever comes after it.

So I stand in the sun and I breathe with my lungs
Trying to spare myself the weight of the truth

To deal with the negative feelings, he stands in the sun, and regulates his breathing, which relieves the panic to an extent. The truth is still there, though.

Saying everything you've ever seen was just a mirror
And you've spent your whole life sweating in an endless fever
And now you're laying in a bathtub full of freezing water
Wishing you were a ghost

Everything you've ever seen was just a mirror--meaning in the end, everything that has ever happened to you so far in life is now a reflection; just a memory. The next three lines go on to say how either the narrator, or one feeling these emotions has simply wasted their whole life experiencing these negative feelings, and now looking back they just wish that they were dead.

But once you knew a girl and you named her Lover
And danced with her in kitchens through the greenest summer
But autumn came, she disappeared, you don't remember
Where she said she was going to

But you know that she's gone because she left you a song
That you don't want to sing

I'm coming back to these lines and adding in the song bit because the Lover situation may not just reflect past love--but also good times that have passed and are now only memories. Like the summer; life was perfect and the narrator was happy, but then summer ended, and because summer is not a physical thing, it just vanished in time. I interpret the song that it leaves to be memories, and the narrator doesn't want to think about them because they only remind him of time passed.

My interpretations may be a bit screwy and all over the place, but that's the best I can do. It pretty much boils down to either anger and bitterness towards those in love, or fear of the passing of time, or a bit of both intertwined.

Either way, this song is fucking beautiful. It truly is THE perfect sonnet, in my opinion--not only are the lyrics good and can be attributed to a good bit of us, either now or at some point in our lives, but also the music is powerful, the melody is beautiful, and the emotion in Conor's voice perfectly reflects what he's trying to say.

Journey – Don't Stop Believin' Lyrics 15 years ago
This song, in my opinion, is about how people from all different walks of life can be brought together in some way, and regardless of what happens to us, life goes on. We pick up the pieces and continue living, and we don't stop believing....

Which is why I think this was a fitting song for the end of the Sopranos. There was no real way to end the series. Even though the characters were fictional, they lived their lives like real people, and there isn't some happy ending or emotional climax (please keep your heads out of the gutter, haha)--they just continued living their lives. Life goes on, regardless of what happens. Unless we die. But still, life goes on for everyone else.

This song may not seem like much, but my dad used to play this for me when I was still little and I didn't understand why him and my mom didn't live together anymore. Radiohead – Faust Arp Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this song is about Thanksgiving dinner.

"Fingers in the blackbird pie"--there's always some sort of pie at Thanksgiving dinner, and usually kids trying to get an early bite of it.

"Dead from the neck up
I guess I'm stuffed, stuffed, stuffed
We thought you had it in you
But not, not, not
Exactly where do you get off?
Is enough, is enough
I love you but enough is enough
Enough of that stuff"

Dead from the neck up is referring to the turkey, whose head is missing, and what's left of him is plump, and juicy, albeit dead, while his head is somewhere else. The turkey is stuffed with stuffing. Everything else in those lines is testing how much people really can eat, and encouraging them not to stuff themselves so much.

"In duplicate and triplicate and
Plastic bags in duplicate and triplicate"

Obviously breaking the leftover turkey into more and more pieces, as to save it in plastic bags in the fridge.

"Reasonable and sensible
Dead from the neck up
I guess I'm stuffed, stuffed, stuffed"

A person who has eaten too much, like that feeling one gets when eating too much, and basically everything between your legs and neck feels stuffed and bloated. "Reasonable and sensible" refers to how that person should have eaten.

And, to top off the song:

"You've got a head full of feathers
You got melted to butter"

boom. Seriously, though, don't take my post too seriously. When I first heard this song, I was listening to the whole album, start to finish, and just how short, fast-paced and soft this was....it caught me off guard to the point where I was like "WOAH!" and this was the first song I listened to again after hearing the whole album. I needed to catch this again.
