| The video, on the other hand, is a whole different story. But other posters have covered that aspect and I prefer the story of the song itself over the video. | |

| Wow. Great job on the interpretation. It's the moment of decision in a relationship where the past hasn't been so great, and the future could go either way. He's basically coming clean with her on how he feels (and how he thinks she feels). He tells her if we put it all out there and work on it, we can finally be in love together. Otherwise, he'll go it alone, cold and miserable, but still loving her. Everybody needs someone, and they need each other. | |

| Warren Zevon – Genius Lyrics | 15 years ago |

Absolutely love this song. Top shelf Zevon, for sure. I agree that the song is sprinkled with anger, but the first two lines give you an idea of how to take it: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "I've got a bitter pot of je ne sais quoi" (literally "I don't know what") "Guess what-I'm stirring it with a monkey's paw" (an object that grants the possessor 3 wishes with severe consequences) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- His emotions are bubbling over with confusion while being stirred by an object that's capable of producing both enormous joy and pain. Also, pay attention to the confessions that are mixed in with the jabs... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- "I became A minor inconvenience" "I'm the one who always told you you were smart" "You broke my heart into smithereens" "But there's nothing I can do or say I haven't done or said" ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- But the biggest admission and the one that elevates the song to the level of...wait for it...genius is: ---------------------------------------------------- "If I could only get my record clean I'd be a genius" ---------------------------------------------------- The previous jabs prove to be slivers of jealousy. He isn't a genius and it's likely that he'll never become one. Therefore, he'll never get her back. One thing I really like about the writing is how he hits you with something humorous, then immediately counters with something painful and honest. One moment it's praise for Einstein and Sheen's skill with the ladies, the next is the sobering truth where he admits that he's emotionally destroyed. WZ will always be one of the greats. It really sucks that he's gone. |

"And night comes to Tallahassee" That line for me will always be the definitive moment on the album. Everything that came before builds to this one moment. It's do or die. |

| The Cowboy Junkies – Come calling Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I "rediscovered" Lay It Down again after years of letting it collect dust on a shelf. And it's even more stunning now that I'm a bit older. This song in particular gets me. It's amazing how the same set of lyrics can be inserted into two entirely different musical interpretations and create two entirely different "sides" of a story. The lyrics tend to be self-explanatory, though I want to point out one minor error in the above lyrics that makes a world of difference. In the final verse it should be: "So you're drinking for the pleasure of falling and you're falling for the pleasure of pretending CAUSE I'm sitting by the window waiting for you to come calling" Now this adds a lot of weight to the entire story. The two main characters are simultaneously reminiscing and pretending that the other is waiting for them. When the word "that" is exchanged with "cause" it shows that both characters are, in fact, waiting for the other to call. Oh, the irony. No alcohol or fantasy needed here. GD, somebody get them a phone! |

| I think this song is like a 21st century version of The Kinks "Village Green". | |

| I don't think this is so much about the law, but someone pleading their case with another person, possibly a lover they wronged. They seem to be stating that they've learned from their mistakes and is begging for another chance. | |
