i don't think he means 'protest singer' in the literal sense, or not fully at least.

Death Cab for Cutie – What Sarah Said Lyrics 14 years ago
I don't really think the last line is much about staying with someone UNTIL they die, but more WHILE they're dying. Staying with someone through bad times when nothing is in your hands and it's all up to whatever decides about that.

Death Cab for Cutie – What Sarah Said Lyrics 14 years ago
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I483tB12SyE&feature=email
It's the official video. It's so great and really portrays the story well. You should watch it for yourself, I'm just gonna give you my interpretation of it. In my opinion, the girl is already gone in the video. It's just a ghost.

To me, Sarah was his suicidal lover. She loved him, and though he loved her back, she couldn't see it because of her own self-hate. The video starts with her looking in the mirror, putting on lipstick. On the mirror (mirror: symbolic for her soul) she writes: "Il m'aime." (he loves me). She goes to the room where he is. When she opens her hand (in her hand: to herself and him), it says "un peu?"(a little). She immediately closes the hand again. On the wall (: to the world) she writes "beaucoup" (a lot).
Then she sits next to him, and on her arm is written "passionnement" (passionately), which assembles cutting, self-harm, to me. She then carves "à la folie" (with madness) into her leg.
She returns to the mirror, and underneath "il m'aime" she writes: "pas du tout" (not at all - he doesn't love me at all).

Finally she wipes it all away, which symbolizes her suicide attempt. And that's how he wound up in the hospital, 'cause: "love is watching someone die".

At the very end the girl returns to the mirror and again writes: "il m'aime."

Kate Bush – Running Up That Hill Lyrics 14 years ago
I agree that I prefer the Placebo version (now I really like Placebo in general, but still). The instrumentals in that version add so much to the lyrics. His vocals (or at least the way he uses them in this song) really carry out the meaning and the emotion of this song.

Forgive Durden – I've Got a Witch Mad at Me and You Could Get into Trouble Lyrics 14 years ago
"When dawn arrives
We'll be ten drinks deep.
If we can fight off turning horizontal,
We'll explore our new home
And find similarities at every turn."

Sounds to me like it's about homosexuality.

Ben Harper – Excuse Me Mr. Lyrics 14 years ago
Somehow I feel like the Mr. stands for being American. How some people ruin the environment and our planet carelessly, giving Americans a bad name, when there are people like Ben Harper, a Mr. too, who do give a damn about those kind of things, but are stuck with that reputation.

Josiah Leming – Razorblades and Handgrenades Lyrics 15 years ago
she swears she fell from heaven
a short fall from holy hands
and the sun forsakes the sky just to lay
upon her golden strands
she wants to touch the fire
she wants to hold it in her hands
she wants to catch the lightning bolts
and glow without their reprimands

The falling from Heaven thing, I think, stands for a relationship, or multiple relationships, that got ended after she'd been let down or betrayed by the other. With the sun forsaking the sky, he probably tries to portray her beauty. The next few lines show a (maybe too) strong ambition this girl has, which the narrator seems to admire.

but underneath her pillowcase
is where she keeps the razorblades
for the next person that falls asleep
and underneath her staircase
is where she lays the handgrenades
for the next person that tries to leave

In this verse it turns out she's a bitter (or "harmed") soul. The razorblades and hand grenades can be interpreted in two ways: the first being a longing for revenge. The other one, more likely considering the last line "for the next person that tries to leave" is that she put those traps there out of fear. Scared of being left by someone she held dear, once again.

The narrator might already be in a relationship with the girl at this point, not realizing he's that next person.

kick and scream, don't let her take me
sleep and dream, it's all the same
don't let me miss the signs that lead me out
tonight i fall down

Here he pretty much realizes he's that person. This verse is the most confusing one, because everything suggests that she is revengeful, while that really doesn't make sense to me. However, "don't let me take her", can also be explained differently. Now that he's in a relationship with this harmed person he realizes he'd underestimated how her past had affected her mental condition, or it would affect their relationship and him. All of a sudden he isn't so sure anymore if he can deal with this relationship, and he feels like he should get out of it. He doesn't want to stay with her because he's afraid of what the relationship might do with him, but he's also afraid to leave her, because of what she might do to him. Then the chorus follows and "the next person" is replaced by "I", which is confirming the above.

oh i try to leave
yes i try to leave
leave her

Seems like the fear of what she might do to him/herself if he'd leave has won, and he stays, though in conflict with himself.

Then there's a bit repetition, seemingly for the sake of the song's flow.

My American Heart – Certainty Kills Lyrics 15 years ago
I don't think it's the certainty that things will end is what "kills" him.

To me it's more like, he can't settle. So he just keeps going from place to place, and each time he's a complete new person to the world.

I think that this is where he realizes is life has become "certain". He's got a girlfriend (fiancee maybe?), a job, friends and everything there. He's got a solid life, a place where he can spend the rest of his life, if he'd want to, and where he WILL spend the rest of his life, if things don't change. And it's that certainty that "kills" him.
And, it's not like he knew that he would leave the town, when he first got there. He really was determined to make it his home. He is with every place he lives in, but it never really works out, no matter how hard he tries.
"I'll die tomorrow", means that he leaves this town and all the faces behind, and because he will never see them again, he'll be dead in a way.
"My fear of waking up is haunting me tonight", when you live like him, you never really know what to expect of the next place you'll be. Even though he doesn't want to stay there, he's also scared of what's waiting for him; scared that the life he will lead is worse than the life he's leading now.

That's the first part of the song,

then you have the second part.

It sounds like he's regretting his choices. He's recalling all the good memories, and how he hoped things would have worked out with the you-person, the one he's left in the first part of the song. But it didn't, 'cause he got scared once again, and couldn't stay. But he knows that he can't come back to her.

That's how I interpret it, anyway.

Panic! at the Disco – Folkin' Around Lyrics 15 years ago
-wasn't done-

Even though, he realizes now, the other person didn't care as much about him as he thought, but just liked being around him, without it meaning that much ("just passing the time"), he still wants her/him. 'Cause, even though they didn't love him back, like he thought they did, he still loves them/cares for them.

And, although they used him - in a certain way - he still looks back with nostalgia.

Panic! at the Disco – Folkin' Around Lyrics 15 years ago
To me it's about two lovers, maybe friends. The narrator, and the one who's it sung to. Whenever the one who's it sung to, had problems, the narrator would be there for them. As time passed, they grew apart, but he still had the feeling they meant a lot to each other. However, now that he's in comparable situations, the other doesn't help out like he had expected to. I think the narrator was the one being naive, and assuming the other was just as naive as he was.

Regina Spektor – Samson Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is really special to me, it reminds me of one of my best friends. She was diagnosed with cancer, three years ago. Five months after she had been diagnosed a small party for just our class was held in the pub of a classmate's dad, nothing really loud and obnoxious or trendy or whatever, just sharing an eve with the 24 of us (we had a great class back then, everyone got a long with eachother). She was there too, as was her boyfriend, who was also from our class. Halfway the evening he grabbed the mic and asked if he could have everyone's attention for a minute, then he also took his acoustic guitar and started playing and singing this song, dedicated to her. It ended up in having the entire class crying.
Three months ago she passed away. Our entire class from back then was there, and this song was played, although not by Jasper. I don't think he could have even get halfway through the song without breaking down.

"You're hair was long, when we first met." To me it's telling how she was healthy back when we got to know her, and then all of a sudden she just became ill and she lost her hair from the heavy chemo.

Fall Out Boy – Golden Lyrics 15 years ago
The first part
"How cruel is the golder rule, when the lives we live are only golden plated?", I think it means "How great is this fabulous life really, when the only thing that's glamerous is, what the rest of the world gets to see". That fame is overrated.

The chorus
"And I saw God crying in the reflection of my enemies, all the lovers with no time for me, and all of the mohters raise they're babies, to stay away from me.", I think that what's trying to be said, that when he looks into the eyes of his enemies, his lover that doesn't have time of me, or the mothers that think he's a bad influence or whatever, he sees God crying, because of what a failure He had created, and he realizes what a fucked up person he is. That, even though he's got cash, and he made it, he's still a small, pathetic person that society doesn't like.

First of all, the title is Swim With Sam, not Sammy.

This sing is about (a character of) the book Held Van Beroep, by the Dutch writer Adriaan Jaeggi. The title means Hero By Profession, in English.
