Her name is "Amanda". And this is the song I will play for her soon. It's very close to how I see us, her and I. We're not spring chickens. We are well into our mid 50's. Just about the median age most of Gov't Mule's audience, I'd suppose. So this song I am holding back as my secret song. I've played a lot of music for and to her, but this one has to wait. I play this when I need to 'feel' her near. Thanks for listening. The 7th Son |

Okay, I submitted this song because I can read so much about myself into the lyrics. I guess that's what it's all about, for the most part. Most of the time, you identify with a line here or a phrase there, but how often do you find a whole song that touches every nerve? A friend of mine commented that it was the saddest song she'd ever heard. I never considered myself as 'sad'. But, from the "...mouthes of babes..." I'm hoping it's just a misread on her part. | Boston – Amanda Lyrics | 17 years ago |

Amanda is a personal song to everyone that hears it with their hearts. It’s not a hard song to identify with no matter which gender you inhabit. It’s the heartache in the process, the process of learning and discovering the object of your passions. If you’ve sung along to this song, then I believe you understand. Each one of us has a unique view of what they believe this song means to them. That pang of self doubt. The crushing blow of rejection. And so on. The fact that this song touches so many is all anyone may need to know they aren’t alone. You aren’t the first and you won’t be the last. So if it doesn’t work out this time, keep it in mind the next time. When it may be you on the receiving end of those three all important words. I’m in a similar situation as many of you. I can’t tell her now. It isn’t my manliness at stake here; it’s her frailty I don’t wish to push any more than I have already. She’s been very patient and even understanding. She’s a very private woman with a moderate comfort zone. Her personal integrity is driven by her high morality. It’s one of the many characteristics I respect about her. She is too soon a widow and my respect for her grief and the memory of her husband, a friend, will be what determines what and when I say to her. However, I believe in my heart she knows how I feel. If I can just hold my damn tongue, she’ll let me know when she can deal with it. However that may be. And then it will be up to me to deal with it. There is much more to the story and I won’t bore you with those details. My point is to be understanding and observant. Pay attention to the details. All (really) good things come to those that wait. And if I may use a mixed metaphor, then “be careful what you wish for- if you don’t practice what you preach”. (Apologies to Warren Haynes/ Gov’t Mule, ‘Endless Parade’.) Thanks for listening. This is by far my favorite Joe Bonamassa cover. TFO is my favorite LZ song and Joe's cover does the song the justice. Joe's playing is amazing as is Doug Henthorne's (I believe is the name) singing. Jason Bonham appears on drums and on that pedigee alone should make a worthwile listen. If you've never heard of Joe Bonamassa, and you should, then start your discovery here. 'Nuff said. I have heard JB's TFO and I would tend agree, just not in a wholsale fashion. I used to believe that JB's cover was far and away superior to Zep's. But as of late I've been listening to the all-Zep station on sat radio. It's given me a new respect for Zeppelin's music at large, but especially TFO, my fav Zeppelin tune. But, Joe's cover is righteous, indeed. The first time I heard it I played repetedly for like an hour. I was alone in my car, so I could. Give it a listen. bebop's #1 rule applies. Just not every artist can pull it off. I would submit a Rule #2: If you can't apply #1 above, then show your respect to the original by not performing it worse. But then, that's just me. Thanks for listening. The 7th Son |
