Is this a song about Neptune mourning the loss of Pluto from the official list of planets? and Neptune wanting to abandon the solar system? This seems like a stretch but I can't get the thought out of my head. "What’s right And what’s wrong?" --Neptune's reality is shattered by the possibility of losing his friend Pluto as a fellow planet "Two wor(l)ds as I’ve rounded them off To the nearest of ten" --Counting pluto and the sun there are 10 celestial bodies in the solar system. But this song only concerns two of them "For I gathered your body" --Neptune is mourning the loss of his closest friend, Pluto. "Some great white rose Of youth, your pleasure" --Referring to Pluto, which is sort of like a ball of ice, as a white rose. It was also discovered relatively recently (1930) and could be considered youthful? "Gives of my own heart Generous portions, wisely Breaks of my own heart" --Neptune considered Pluto to be a kindred spirit "While I’ve gone on my own way" --Neptune is alone now "Conserve me, strange waters Come and obey me, strange waters Have it your own way" --a clear reference to Poseidon/Neptune god of the sea. Neptune attempts to look inward for strength, trying to take solace in his own domain. He fails however and basically says "screw it, have it your way" "So oh if you won’t hold me I have no objections So oh if you won’t please me I make no commands So oh if you don’t trust me It’s best if I drown" --Neptune basically says he would rather die than be here alone without his departed friend, Pluto. |

this song is awesome. artistic political activism at its best! i really wasn't a huge fan of this album (liked the others more) but once i started picking up the lyrics to this song it hit me like a brick. anyway, the different "-ize" he talks about seems to me to walk through the life of the average american citizen. from conception to adulthood we have: An egg to fertilize A pulse to stabilize A body to deodorize A life to scrutinize A child to criticize Young adults to modernize Citizens to terrorize Generations to desensitize then after desensitization, we have adult life: A desk to organize A product to advertise A market to monopolize Movie stars you idolize Leaders to scandalize Enemies to neutralize No time to apologize Fury to tranquilize Weapons to synchronize Cities to vapor-i-... just shows how unassuming and zombie-like we americans are, especially in relation to governmental practices. the US gov't bombs cities and assassinates foreign officials (who may or not be legitimately elected...just my political opinion lol), while we just watch in a passive manner. uncontrolled chaos brings us to world-wide weapon preparations.... then the world ends. gotta love the strokes |

i thought this song was about a girl with cancer or some other terminal disease. either that or she fights with depression and is suicidal. ^^^ "and she fights for her life" everywhere she goes. the video and other lyrics seem to say that she's happy to some degree or at least tries to enjoy things. so from that view i have to go with the cancer route. |

after reading the comments i heartily agree that it's about lincoln. "cabin neighbors" (he was known for coming from a modest, "log cabin" family) as well as "illinois, my home". the first stanza "now i lay my head to rest" can be taken to mean that he's dying... so after he dies (at the beginning of the song, no less), he's taken back home from DC to illinois. the avalanche theme taken as manifest destiny seems fitting as well, since it was an important political issue throughout the 1800s (during lincoln's time, specifically indian-subjugation... but i digress). and i guess he rides the avalanche west to his home i haven't put it all together, clearly... this is just a start lol |
