Along with what everyone else has said, I believe this is an amazing allusion referring to "Sherman's March to the Sea". This is the name most commonly used for the Savannah Campaign during the American Civil War. I won't bore you with details, but they basically tore through the southern enemy terretory, like badasses, without supply lines. It was considered one of the most revolutional acts in American history.
Very strong lyrics, but what's new?... These guys are genius. |

you are right about the jimmy eat world, but about the different versions: the earlier version that he wrote in the very beginning and the one that is on the Ready..Break albumn has the "its just this guilt has got the best of me", but later on he changes it to better fit the story that was in progress |

ok so guys... this song has nothing to do with a roman emperor or any BS like that. the song is about his ex girlfriend and how he decided to leave her but he will come back for her. that is a very vague version, but id rather not share the rest of the story or how it got the name because music is supposed to be left up to interpretation and when i met andrew he told me that was what it was meant to do. he wrote it so almost anyone could relate to it.
and also, the reason why he doesnt play this song at JM shows is because, one, it isnt a JM song. yes, i know that he plays other soco songs at the JM concerts, but he only plays the ones that he still has emotional attachments to. The story and the girl that konstantine was written about is in his past and he cannot perform that song to the best of his abilities any more. |
