UPDATE: I just read (in a book about BOC) that this song is about jesus being a UFO. Also Boc has said that this song is about how religion and ufology have a lot in common. The above poster was correct. |

According to a book about BOC that I read a year or two ago, this is a novel related song. The Great Sun Jester and the Fireclown feature in Michael Moorcocks stories "The Fireclown" and "The Transformation of Mavis Ming." |

I think I remember this song was written when Richard Meltzer, the lyricist, was sitting around bored at the BOC house at the time (where they would rehearse) and was watching a news report about some guy breaking out of an insane asylum and is killing people)and he wrote this song about being bored and just vegetating at home. A cagey cretin. |

If you read some interviews at the time the album came out, this song deals with Conry's Bar west, but also adds the idea that there is a secret organization called "the motif of the rose" there that passes drugs through kisses, in a sort of initiation ritual.
Oh, and "Gin glows in the dark" refers to an event that actually happened at the bar while the band was playing there. Someone spilled a drink and it glowed in the dark. |

I used to think this song was of an apocolyptic future after a nuclear holocaust and that we should just live for everyday and have fun, but as re-read the lyrics I am wondering if they don't refer to a ruin in europe and the statuary there depicting dancing lords and ladies; also how things may change but these statues last for eternity. |

I have always thought this song is about a guy in love with a vampiress. She actually loves him too, and will not harm him. In a twisted way, he is jealous of the fact that she doesn't use him for her nightly "ritual"; he thinks she doesn't really need him. (I get the vampire reference from her eyes glowing like coals in the night.) |
