sheep, i believe, is a metaphor for those who go with the flow and do exactly as everyone does. they are told by all the religious people that that's the way to live life, do as everyone else and go to heaven. goats i think, mean the ones that dont mix with the rest. being different is bad, so "goats go to hell". it's a metaphor for how society likes to drive people who are different from the rest down. |

i always thought this was about how alot of people believe they are happy because that's what they are told. they live a "good" life, and even if it isn't the one they want, they are happy with it because they know that someone else has it worse. shiny people are fake people. they think they are happy, but have no idea what happiness is. |

This song is the reason alot of Christians hate REM. (well, at least the dumber ones. no Christians, im not saying you are dumb, but every group has a few idiots mixed in) mostly because of the first line "I can't say that I love Jesus, that would be a hollow claim" ive always thought that this meant that it's really impossible to actually love someone who you have never met or seen, only read about. and it's about how Christians like to force their religion on others, and tell them that if they don't believe what they do they will go to hell. but, not just Christians, its about America, the government promoting Christianity and saying all other religions are false even though it's supposed to be a country of religious tolerance. why should it matter what people think of Jesus? im not of any religion at all, but i do believe Jesus did exist. and that he was a great man, and diserves respect. a peace activist, like ghandi, john lennon, and martin luther king... and just like them, he was brutally murdered for his veiws. though the idea of him being the son of god is well, completely unbelievable to me. even if he was, i would never worship him, i find the idea of worship to be degrading to both parties involved. perhaps this song is about a view of religion similar to mine, especially on the concept of Jesus. |

Im really starting to think im the only one who has any idea what this song is about... all the time we see people die, on tv, in the news, on the intertnet, and we all just laugh about it, never realizing that there's really someone there who died who had a life... seeing them die is the "worst joke ever" even though we dont know that they might have had "the greatest life story" that we completely miss. |

It's about the fact that what humans actually are is animals. we arent vegetable or minerals, we are animals. "Hey, what's the big deal? I'm an animal." we are just animals like any other, so why do we deny it? why cant we be what we are? "Tell me how to feel?" we are constantly told what to do and how to live and how to feel... we are the only animal that lives by rules, and at the same time we are some of the most troubled animals there are. we are forced to go against our own instinct. we are artificial life forms, forced away from all that is natural. |
