Gordon Lightfoot – The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald Lyrics 12 years ago
This is a haunting song about an actual shipwreck that happened in a storm on November 10, 1975 on Lake Superior when the SS Edmund Fitzgerald went down with all hands. The song was released a year later. Although the wreck was discovered soon after, the cause still has never been conclusively determined. Lightfoot took some artistic license with the lyrics and some are not 100% accurate but that doesn't detract from the song. It's an interesting story.

A "Rusty Water" is whiskey and tonic. It inspires him to write but gets him into trouble because of his big mouth.

Breathe – How Can I Fall? Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is about a guy who wants to break up with a wonderful woman, but he's too weak to face her when she hasn't done anything to deserve being dumped. Beautiful song.

Foo Fighters – I Should Have Known Lyrics 14 years ago
The song is about "survivor's guilt". Maybe Dave wrote it when he felt guilty about the Foo Fighters' success, born from the ashes of Kurt's suicide or from successful songs inspired by lost loves. I doubt that only one person inspired it.

"Mulata" is a sexy, dark-skinned woman. The tone of voice you use when saying it can be complementory or derrogatory.

Phil Collins – A Groovy Kind Of Love Lyrics 16 years ago
A remake of a 1965 song by the Mindbenders. It went to #2 on the US and UK charts then.

Phil took it all the way to #1 in 1988. He was nominated for "Best Male Pop Vocal Performance" but lost to Bobby McFarin's "Don't Worry, be Happy".

Southern Culture On The Skids – Camel Walk Lyrics 16 years ago
This is a silly song with a catchy, off-beat tune. I think it also pokes fun at fetishes.

Men at Work – Who Can It Be Now? Lyrics 16 years ago
When the song came out, Colin Hay said it was about the bill collectors that used to come to his (and his buddy's) apartment to collect. They would hide and pretend that they weren't home to buy themselves some time.

Masturbation...

Phil Collins – Doesn't Anybody Stay Together Anymore Lyrics 16 years ago
This is a break-up song. It could be about one of his many divorces, but I have to wonder if he wrote it for a couple that he thought would be together forever.

Phil Collins – Colours Lyrics 16 years ago
Phil has become a humanitarian and wants to bring attention to the oppressed. It was probably written with the Africans in mind, but it would apply to the Iraqis, Ukrainians, etc.

Phil Collins – Survivors Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is Phil begging his wife to forgive him for having an affair with a back-up singer.
She didn't. It's too bad that Phil writes better songs when he's miserable.

Phil Collins – We Fly So Close Lyrics 16 years ago
Beautiful song. I saw Phil in concert in '94 and he said this song is about our constant brushes with disaster.

Phil Collins – Always Lyrics 16 years ago
This song was written by Irving Berlin and given to his wife, Ellin McKay, as a wedding present. Ellin was disowned by her family for marrying Berlin, a Jew. The royalties from the song would keep support her, even if she lost Irving and his money.

It's a beautiful song even without knowing the back story.

Genesis – Open Door Lyrics 16 years ago
From "Three Sides Live". I always imagined it from the perspective of sailor who must travel to make a living and leaving his love behind. For some reason, he's away for a very long time (shipwrecked?) or he returns home to find her gone (or dead).

Genesis – Never A Time Lyrics 16 years ago
It's another break-up song with an awsome melody and lyrics. Phil hasn't had much luck with the ladies, probably because he strays from time-to-time.

Genesis – Like It Or Not Lyrics 16 years ago
It's a song about being lonely. He considers asking her to come back then realizes why he dumped her. Then he regrets being alone. It's the conflict one goes through with relationships.

Genesis – Ballad Of Big Lyrics 16 years ago
This is simply a cowboy legend song. I always thought it was strange, coming from three Brits until I learned that Phil Collins is a huge fan of the Alamo. There were several songs from "And then there were Three" with western themes. Even the cover art has three cowboys around a camp fire.

Good music.

Lyrics by Tony Banks. He's reflecting about the love (or infatuation) of his life leaving in the middle of the night. I don't know much about Tony so I can't guess if it's personal or general.

Paul Carrack – How Long Lyrics 17 years ago
Paul Carrack is an under-rated musical genius. If he had a huge ego he would have put his name on his best work instead of sharing it with artists like Ace, Squeeze, Mike + the Mechanics, the Pretenders, Elton John, etc. This song is obviously about cheating, but not like you would think. When Paul sang lead for ACE back in the 70's he learned that the bassist, Terry Comer, was sneaking out and playing for other bands.

Annie Lennox – Little Bird Lyrics 17 years ago
The song is about taking a major step in life. It's probably about leaving a long-time lover. It would be a fitting song for drag queens, too.
