The Jam – Girl On The Phone Lyrics 17 years ago
i heard this referred to a reporter or someone who wrote reviews of albums and such --- this would answer "how" she gets his number --- it would answer "why he doesn't remember meeting her (met a bunch of reporters that day) -- and would explain how she learns all of his info (using her work resources to further her creepy crush).

The Replacements – Bastards Of Young Lyrics 17 years ago
trivia:
he slips in a "sons of norway" for a "sons of no one" one time
sons-of-norway is kinda-sorta big in mpls. it's a group along the lines of shriners and elks and what-not that were so popular to the generation of the 50's.
in the 80's they degenerated to the point that they mainly sold insurance (and like the shriners and the elks gained no new members while watching all of their current members die off). The had a huge building in the twin cities and they allowed local bands to rent their space on friday and saturday nights for concerts.
i'm sure the mats played at least once at the sons of norway during '81.

The Replacements – Unsatisfied Lyrics 17 years ago
great song .... great song .... great song
the lyrics can fit for sexual or other meanings, and this helps give this song a nice broad accessibility. whatever disappointment you yourself are goin thru at present, this song speaks for you !
but like all of westerberg's songs, this is all about paul.
he's answering the people (everybody he knows pretty much, but most especially all of the folks in the music business) who are constantly criticizing him and telling him that he has a fear of success and that he will INTENTIONALLY feck up every time he gets a chance to close the deal to become the ACKNOWLEDGED voice of his generation.
i always think he's singing to jill mclean from twin-tone (the band is sitting on jill's roof outside of her second-story window facing lyndale avenue in Dan Corrigan's photo that was used as the cover of "Let It Be). He's saying, "no i ain't satisfied being a big-fish in this little mpls. pond. i want more ! i wanna be bigger than the beatles and stones combined !!"
unfortunately jill and everybody else was right ... they get chance to show there stuff to everyone on SNL, what do the do?, they get so fecking drunk people can't even tell what species they are ...
as he sings on "we're coming out" ... SNL became the same-old, same-old
"one more chance to get it all wrong ... one more chance thrown away ... one more time to do it all wrong"
"liberty is a lie" is a reference to all of the suggestions/demands from all of the a&r folks
"everything you dreamed of" refers to paul's desire to be bigger than he was then, sadly he didn't become as big as he could have.

The Replacements – Somethin To Du Lyrics 17 years ago
two of the members of husker were gay, but they were tough and also they project a tough image.
not much "inside" , just another hostile spew of lyrics (this time about their fellow twin-tone label-mates.
don't take the lyrics to express a literal feeling, tho' (do you think "i hate music" explains paul's view of music !!)
at this stage every song was negative

The Replacements – Merry Go Round Lyrics 17 years ago
a song about paul's sister mary.
in the first verse "they" refers to paul and mary's parents.
great song, those harsh judgemental words from paul are a nice counterpoint to the soothing melody

The Replacements – Achin' To Be Lyrics 17 years ago
this song is about paul's sister mary (as is merry-go-round).
when i met mary she was working at the guthrie theater (she was also an artist) but of course had not had anywhere near the success of paul ... this is about how mary is "achin' to be" a successful well-known artist like her brother paul, "like me."
as with all of paul's lyrics about people who knows (even like this someone he deeply loves) his harsh judgemental views shine forth.
anyone else ever listen to "something to du" ??
