Muse – Butterflies and Hurricanes Lyrics 16 years ago
Butterflies and hurricanes is such a perfect juxtapostion. Fragility and power. Yeah I realise it's related to chaos theory and the lyrics are describing someone on the treshold of a decision. The moment of the decision is miniscule but will have a huge impact of the rest of their lives. (substitute society or whatever you want for the butterfly if you must). But think about how well the title fits the piano instrumental nicked from Rachmaninoff. The delicate fluttering butterfly of the melodic line that comes flying out of the fat hurricane of the broken bass chords. Ok so maybe this is just my bizarre musing, but surely a band with this name would support that?

Muse – Can't Take My Eyes Off You (Frankie Valli cover) Lyrics 16 years ago
I like what they've done with the song, but when I first heard it I thought it was really weird for muse. I didn't know it was a cover and I thought the lyrics were kind of trite. I just doesn't sit right with their usual lyrics. Good music, overly sentimental lyrics.

Muse – Space Dementia Lyrics 16 years ago
This is pretty masochistic. It's definitely bordering on obsession rather than being a love song. Why does everyone think everything is a love song anyway? I love the rachmanninoff stuff in here. Personally I don't think you could call it plagarism. Plagarism implies a crime. It shouldn't be a crime to build on great music. Classical music with modern instruments can sound amazing. Vivaldi's winter on electric guitar is a good combination.

The part "peace will arise and tear us apart and make us meaningless again" I think means that the singer is obsessed with someone, but they have a sort of torturous relationship (i know I can't spell by the way). If they stopped fighting then maybe the other person wouldn't notice the singer at all. It would "tear them) apart". So he loves the "dirty tricks" and "twisted games" because they are the only way he can get close to the other person. The stuff he's putting up with is scaring him, giving him a "chill" but he's so obsessed that it's worth it. He can co exist with the pain as long as he keeps the game going. It's pretty one sided as a relationship. And decidedly masochistic.

That's just my thoughts though.

Muse – Hysteria Lyrics 16 years ago
This is really beautifully written music. The vocal line in the verses is fantastic. That thing with the third note of every phrase going up is really good. (that's all the 'me's in the first couple of lines) You kind of anticipate it, you know what note it should be and it's always just almost too late. Kind of drives you crazy. You want the note. Lol. I guess that fits the meaning of the song pretty perfectly. I think it has something to do with the tone of his voice. I like the distortion on the bass too. It's like when you get angry and everything around you goes fuzzy and unimportant except the thing that you're angry about which stands out electric like the vocals here. Very cool

Muse – Unintended Lyrics 16 years ago
I like the pun. Being someone's unintended is so much nicer an image than being someone's intended. Being intended is passive. It's like someone else has arranged the whole thing. Intentions are always the things we say we're going to do but aren't sure whether it's going to work out. Like when you don't do your homework and you tell your teacher that you had every intention of doing it but something came up and you forgot. Intentions are often like excuses. So being something unintended that just happened and turned out to be beautiful is much more romantic somehow. So much for destined soul mates. I think I prefer beautiful chaos.

Edith Piaf – Milord Lyrics 16 years ago
soumik! You need to look up how french negatives work! Ne...que means "only"

Donc, le phrase "Je ne suis qu'une fille de port, qu'une ombre de la rue" means "I am just a girl of the port (a prostitute?), only a shadow of the street.

Edith Piaf – Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien Lyrics 16 years ago
Random bit of an anecdote. Yesterday I watched a student monologue on the life of Piaf. At the end the actress sang a bit of this song. She was a good singer, but I could tell she was singing what she'd heard by listening to the record as a non french speaker and had never actually seen the thing written down. It was horrible. The acting was very good but the song was reduced to gibberish. "rien de rien" became something like "drienne drienne" Nasty. Sort of proves that people planning to sing in another language really have to consulte someone who can understand it on the meaning and pronounciation of the lyrics.

Oasis – Supersonic Lyrics 16 years ago
The dog story is a bit weird, but I suppose not all songs are well thought out masterpieces of great poetic meaning. The Big Issue, though, is a magazine sold by homeless people on the streets of Britain. Buyin one is like an act of charity. The magazine itself is just full of info and stats about homeless people in Britain. So Elsa, (even if inspired by a dog) is pretty cool as a fictional character. She's a streetkid but has managed to do it with a doctor on a helicopter and sniff it through a cane on a supersonic train. Bit surreal, but surreal is better than reality most of the time I think.

Oasis – The Importance Of Being Idle Lyrics 16 years ago
Heero is obviously totally into the spirit of this song. Too idle to bother looking up the word! (It means to be doing nothing, by the way. Lazy.) I love this song. It's fantastic to listen to before sitting exams. It kind of reminds me that actually exams are kind of pointless and idiotic and there are far more important things to do in life (like sleep in late). Oasis seem to like literary references. Don't Look Back in Anger is a reference to the play "Looking Back in Anger" isn't it? I didn't know anything about the mark twain book Cast no Shadow mentions, but The Importance of Being Earnest is a pretty cool thing to nick a title from, even if it was via Mr Twain.

Just read Liam G 's comment. That would make way more sense than my explanation. That explains "Just like to see how far I can take it".

Kasabian – The Doberman Lyrics 16 years ago
dobermans are used as guard dogs right? So maybe the guy in the song is trepassing, but the dogs don't care, cause they have no future and no past, they just exist to guard junk in the present. The guy may as well be alone, for all the sleeping doberman's worth. He's practically already escaped.

Just a thought. Not quite as all emcompassing as a comment on the nature of warfare, but it can't all be about war can it?

Kasabian – L.S.F. (Lost Souls Forever) Lyrics 16 years ago
Trippy. Absolutely no idea what it's supposed to mean though. Sounds like maybe he was just picking words that sounded cool and had associations he liked, even if they make no sense. What the fuck is a polyphonic prostitute? Does it matter? It sounds amazing anyway.

Muse – Exo-Politics Lyrics 16 years ago
How much crap infomation are we fed as gospel truth? Stuff that gets handed down from teacher to student (parent to child) over generations and generations until the totally bizarre becomes ingrained as 'fact'? There are obvious examples, like um...religion! but what about all the stuff we haven't even realised is crap yet? Stuff gets disproved all the time. Like the statue of Romulus and Remus and the wolf in Rome. It's not Ancient Roman at all. It was probably made in the middle ages. But everyone's believed for years that it's like a couple of thousand years old, cause that's what they were told.

I think this is the kind of idea muse is on about with this verse:

Carried through the centuries
Secrets locked up
Are loaded on my back
And it weighs me down

All the rubbish "knowledge" of the past that's been carried with us through the centuries, even though it's actually rubbish. It weighs us down will a false sense of reverency.

Muse – City of Delusion Lyrics 16 years ago
Has anybody else noticed that the line
"That you live and let die"
is a james bond reference? The James Bond film title was itself a reference to the saying "live and let live"
Funny how everything is a reference of everything else.

Radiohead – Creep Lyrics 16 years ago
Has anyone looked at this backwards? Wouldn't it be amazingly weird to be that "fucking special" - to be the girl that everyone obssesses over? You'd feel like some sort of beautiful freak. The singer here feels inadequete, but what would it be like to be thought of as totally aloof. Unapproachable. That would be very creepy.

Muse – Thoughts of a Dying Atheist Lyrics 16 years ago
This is a very cool song. The lyrics are beyond simplistic, but really, what else is there to say?
I think it's far better to admit you know nothing about life and death (and it that scares the hell out of you) than to spend your life trying to find ways to pretend you're not afraid of the pointlessness of it all. That is what atheism is. A confession that you really don't have a clue and that you're not going to grasp at improbable religious straws just to try and inject some meaning into existence. All we know is that we exist; or think we exist. The thought of losing that is extremely scary, no?
