i think this about a groom, nervously pacing the pews before the wedding starts and he overhears this conversation that calls his bride a whore. he obviously is angered and yells at them, but then rethinks it and acts more calmly because nothing gets settled when you're angry cuz you can't think straight. however, i feel like there's a disconnect between him hearing this, being mad, then being rational, and then saying that the marriage is saved. I think that its implied that he calls the wedding off. Obviously, who wants to marry a girl who's sleeping around- if she's doing it now, being married won't change her behavior. so instead of getting angry, he treats this with poise, probably confronts them to ask what they've heard and then confronts his fiancee. prior to this conversation, he was obviously to her promiscuous nature, but after hearing it, he saves the marriage by calling it off. it can't fail if they never got married. so, since he's being poise about all this, he maintains the cheerful wedding demeanor and makes a toasts and pours the champagne. |

okay so i think that this song has to do about how he is bitter towards an ex, perhaps because she thought she was better than him, and he throws this extravagant party to rub in her face how well-off he is, especially without her the 1st verse, he asks his guests to leave overcoats and capes and what not with the doorman, which is customary at a party, but saying that following this custom already makes them out of place [in other words, he made sure he would be the best dressed] obviously he's planning on ruining his ex's evening so by making everyone else seem out of place so he looks better, he's already ruining the evening even though it hasn't gotten to the part where she comes and he rubs his success in her face. the line "ruining this banquet for the mildly inspiring" i think can mean 2 things. 1: the ex was probably a mild inspiration for him to become more successful, so he's ruining this banquet for her. and 2: mildly inspiring can also mean that she isn't as successful or as driven/stimulating- basically that she's less than him- so he's ruining the night for the "lesser folK", aka the ex. the next part about the black slacks just says that when your successful [black slacks with pin strips implying success because it's nice clothing and successful people tend to wear nicer clothes] you can do whatever you want and everything goes according to plan. k then there's this whole metaphor about the cancer. obviously smoking is addicting, but it also leads to cancer, which kills you. So, he's saying that his success will drive her crazy [think of an ex you had that seems to be well off without you- sometimes you obsess over finding out how they're doing and trying to find something that is going badly for them since you parted ways to make yourself feel more important], in this sense, he thinks that his success will make his ex addicted to "stalking" him in a way. he's the new cancer because it kills her, or so he thinks, to see him so well-off; she can't stand it. she's wondering how he because so well off and confident and he's rubbing it in her face nonchalantly, saying oh haven't you heard that i'm the shit now? the next verse talks about her reaction and break down about his sudden success. she goes to the ladies' room [for privacy] to try and regain her confidence. he talks about her not being able to keep up with the fashionistas, which i think implies that not only is HE more successful, but the people he hangs out with are more successful than she is too- they know more about fashion/dress better and she's cheap to them. saying that she's a whispering campaign means that she's obviously not good enough for the crowd of the party, so they whisper about how cheap she is and wonder what she's doing here. i think that she was a big fish in a small pond, but coming to this party shook her confidence because she became a small fish in a big pond- she talks to the mirror to try and regain the confidence by telling herself that she is a diva. the smokes in the cigarette box goes back to the whole cigarette/cancer metaphor. these cigarettes are laced with nitroglycerin, which is an explosive chemical used in a lot of explosive devices like bombs and dynamite. i think that he describes the cigarettes to be laced with nitroglycerin because, again, she is addicted or obsessing over how he's been doing now that she's gone [so the compulsion to smoke] but these cigarettes are laced with nitroglycerin, which means that addiction will make her explode; her obsession over how he's managing without her will make her see how much better off he is and that will drive her up the wall and she can't stand it. her jealousy/frustration/whatever will well up inside her and make her feel like she's going to explode. [think of how when you get extremely angry, that anger explodes]. the last part of the song talks about how insignificant she is, and how he is taking clandestine actions and cleverly and secretly getting back at her for whatever made him be so bitter towards her in the first place. i think that she is used to being the top dog and the center of attention because he talks about how it doesn't feel like a night out with no one "sizing her up". sizing someone up means to analyze or assess someone- so in other words, she doesn't have guys sizing her up and deciding that she's hot and going after her, or people sizing her up and deciding that she's the "it" girl. this feeling of being insignificant and incompetent is foreign to her. he then states that he's never been so surreptitious, or cunning/having secret intentions, [the whole plan to invite her to this party he's throwing- which she probably assumes would be an attempt to win her back when he actually has the intentions of getting back at her and flaunting how better off he is without her by undermining her status and confidence. she'll be so caught up in or distracted by her pretentious ideas that he's going to be crawling back to her, that she will be shocked when he "strikes the punch" and rubs it in her face. overall- AWESOME song! its extremely catchy and i love what it's about. patd are geniuses. |

also, i think the line "it suddenly rains on us... she's laughing and throws up her hands" may be describing how he suddenly starts realizing he doesn't love her [the sudden rain] and that she's naive and oblivious to that fact, which is why she laughs and throws up her hands in the rain. "I notice a chill in the air, September is creeping up fast." ^i think that the chill represents his changed feelings and the fact that he has to end things. September creeping up fast is essentially saying that the time to break the bad news to her is coming up fast and that he has to tell her soon. |

i think this is about young summer love. obviously the first verse shows how "perfect" and happy their relationship is. although he focuses on her and her happiness, it shows how ideal and beautiful their time together is. however i think he focuses on her to more effectively show how things changed and the consequences of his feelings for her [both good and bad]. he then has a more serious second verse in which obviously they say goodbye. I think that maybe distance has a factor, but i think that he lost feelings for her, and when summertime ends and they have to say goodbye, they can't leave as friends because she's so in love with him and he's not. Also, the second line "Things were promised in blood; we have sinned." implies that maybe she lost her virginity to him [hence the blood and saying that they have sinned because of pre-marital sex]. This also adds to why they wouldn't be able to leave as friends. obviously the last 2 lines show how upset she is about the parting but how he seems to be a bit apathetic about the whole situations... turning numb to the sound. the next verse, when he says "innocence doesn't mean we're immune to these things" i think he is saying because they were naively "in love", doesn't mean that it disregards reality. he just kind of engaged in this relationship because it was fun at the time, and even though he had innocent and pure intention, it doesn't mean that he can't still hurt her. saying that truth costs more than he can spare right now, and that its simpler for him to lie, shows that he knows that telling her the truth will be way to painful for her and that maybe lying will be easier. which is why i think he says he'll blame the passage of time, which also implies the long distance summer fling- their relationship ended because the time had passed and it was time for him to leave, at least that's what he wants her to believe finally i think that the chorus describes how his feelings change over time and how reality begins to set in. like autumn leaves change colors, his feelings for her changed, and then chilly winter comes "breathing" the cold harsh reality that he doesn't love her anymore. and the "snow" that kind of separates their paths [if you think of a heavy snowstorm, you get snowed in and can't get to certain places]. however he says that wherever she goes and all that he knows about their relationship [aka what he learned from this whole experience] is that beautiful things don't last, you can experience them for a second but sooner or later some form of reality sets in and changes it. overall its a GORGEOUS song and i think ron pope is a GENIUS! his music is so soulful and meaningful. plus his voice is sooooo beautiful! you can really hear the emotion behind it |

to me, this song is kind of about how his lover is trying to resist their love. Maybe she's scared or something, but the line "if you don't want me to leave, then don't push me away" makes me think that she's pushing him away cuz she's scared of getting hurt and he's just trying to reassure her. So mainly this song is expressing how he's willing to stick it out and stay even though she's trying to push him away. i think that the line "and when there's no storm, how can i feel the calm" is saying that if there isn't a storm of emotions [i.e. mixed emotions.. love hate fear etc about the relationship] then how can he get to the calm, or the point of apathy where he doesn't love her anymore. which is why right after he says there isn't room in his heart for that. he continues to say that if he does leave, they're still going to feel alone and afraid... meaning that if he doesn't stand by her and show her that it's okay, then she'll never get over this fear of commitment and falling in love. the last chorus, where he's talking about the tears he's cried i think shows that even though this is hard on him, because she's saying no, he's willing to endure it and stay. |

| Jason Mraz – Please Don't Tell Her Lyrics | 16 years ago |

I think that this is about a girl that he fell in love with but never had a chance with her. he describes her as kicking ass across the board [she's successful] and having the broadest shoulders and is taller than he is.... for men, being tall unconsciously signals dominance so i think the fact that she's "taller" just means that she's better than him.... out of his league kind of thing. he talks about the game never ending so i think that implies that she kind of teases him because it never ended but he never got a legitimate chance with him because he never got to put in his quarter. i think when he says "she would die before i crawl over them" also shows that she would die before she give him a fair chance. the whole "she new i would enjoy the view" thing shows that she knows she's out of his league- he would enjoy dating someone as beautiful and successful as she, so she let him think he had a chance, but then she let him down and the doubts of her being too good for him came true so why after the all of everything that came and went I care enough to still be singing of the bitter end and broken eras..... ^ this whole section basically confesses that he actually does miss her. because if he didn't, why would he still be singing about it? he tells the listener that even though he said he doesn't miss her, he actually does because he's using reverse psychology to convince himself that he doesn't miss her to cover up the fact that he does. later he says how amazing how self-assured she is... i think that he means she is egotistical and that she knew she was teasing him the whole time and that she is also expecting him to miss her. so when he says that he knows she'd hurt when she hears his words it's because he's saying that he doesn't hurt over her even though she's expecting and wanting him to because of how she teased him. so basically, this girl manipulated his feelings for her own amusement and even though he is still hurt, he doesn't want her to "win" and let her know so he says he doesn't miss her in order to conceal, from himself and the girl, that he misses her. |

ChasingStars: I think what that means is that he's trying to find an excuse for why it didn't work- the "i was a boy who loved a woman like a little girl" could mean that he acted like a naive boy and didn't fully apreciate this woman, so instead of loving her as a woman, he loved her as a little girl. So he's thinking that maybe if he had been more mature and treated her more like a woman and fully appreciated her it might've worked out. |

this song is definitely about a changed relationship and unrequited love. "a change in the weather" implies that maybe there was once something, but now the other has moved on, since the speaker still prays that they'll end up together. i think "i hold you closer than most" means that even though most people would've given up, or don't appreciate this person, he sees so much in her and feels like she is something ethereal. in the first verse, he knows that it's pretty much over, and since he's kinda in a stage where he realizes this, but is too attatched to start moving on he asks her to at least pretend like she still loves him just while their together for this short time [i think it also implies a long distance relationship since he's talking about his train going down the east coast and not wasting the weekend] also, the line "dont take what you don't need from me" is kind of like asking her to not take advantage of his affection and the dilehma he's in. he's willing to give her everything, but since he knows it's not working out, he's asking her to not abuse him by asking for more than what she really needs and making it even harder for him. the second verse shows that he doesn't regret it, even if its painful and that he can't get rest and move on because he loves this girl so much. okay, that was kind of a lot, but that's what i got from it. i absolutely LOVE this song- one of the most beautiful songs i've ever heard and i was lucky enough to see the most beautiful dance to this the first time i heard it that had the most amazing choreography by natasha lewis that pretty much brought me to tears. it was so beautiful. |
