| Yeah because that sentence totally displayed the proper use of English. "You have this sounding lie..." uh huh. And it's a play on words numb nuts. | |

All I'm reading is Jesus this, lord that. You Christians always think everything is about your god. This song is CLEARLY about Loki, the Norse God of Mischief. Although frankly it seems they like the Marvel version better. I'll give you an idea of both versions. Touch my mouth and hold my tongue - Loki was known as Loki Liesmith and Silver Tongue as he constantly lied and didn't hold back in his relentless insults against the other Gods. In the movies, he's gagged to keep from practicing magic. I'll never be your chosen one- Really born of the jötunn Fárbauti and Laufey, he is a Frost Giant, but he chooses to become half god by sharing blood with Odin (or Thor, depending on the source) and spends most of his time with the Asgaurdians, mostly causing mischief, but sometimes helping them. Either way, most of them don't really like him. In the movies/comics Odin actually adopts (steals) him and raises him as Aesir and Thor's brother (but Thor is always Odin's chosen one). I'll be home, safe and tucked away You can't tempt me if I don't see the day -After angering the God's he's chained in a cave where venom drips on him (but his wife Sigyn catches most of it in a bowl). In the movies he's locked in a cage after causing chaos on Earth. The pull on my flesh was just too strong It stifled the choice and the air in my lungs Better not to breathe than to breathe a lie 'Cause when I open my body I breathe a lie - Obviously a side to his jötunn heritage, as they were typically antagonist of the Aesir. In the movies he grew up not knowing he was jötunn and when he found out his whole life was a lie he went kinda crazy. I will not speak of your sin There was a way out for him The mirror shows not Your values are all shot - Could refer to many things of legend. Possibly about Loki himself. But oh, my heart was flawed I knew my weakness So hold my hand Consign me not to darkness - Again, probably about Loki's battle over whether to give in to his trickster/Jötunn nature. So crawl on my belly 'til the sun goes down - Loki was a shape-shifter and though we never see him as a snake in legend, he probably could have turned into one and actually gave birth to one called Jörmungandr. I'll never wear your broken crown - As blood-brother to Odin (or Thor), it could be said he could inherit Odin's position if he were to die. Obviously this applies more to the movies, where Odin is just a King of Asgaurd and Loki raised a brother to Thor. I took the road and I fucked it all away - In both the religion and comic/movie versions he pretty much screws up any place he might have previously held on the court. Now in this twilight how dare you speak of grace- Obviously mad that any of the God's expect his mercy after all they've done to him. Also could mean how dare they think they're better than him morally (in the legends Thor was even more blood thirsty). ........ But in this twilight our choices seal our fate - Twilight could refer to Ragnarok, where all of them meet their fate/demise. Jesus never even crossed my mind when I heard this song. And Obviously I'm not the only one cause there's all these little fan videos about the movie Loki to this song on Youtube. |

I know she's only 16 and y'all wanna think she's cute and innocent but this song def has drug references in it. Specifically heroin (and coming off an album called Pure Heroine I'm surprised people are shocked). Tar is a type of heroin. In many countries you have to mix it with orange juice to break it down so you can shoot it. She mentions veins and pulses, which invoke imagery of IV drug use. She mentions wearing long sleeves (to hide the track marks) and killing time (which is one reason to do drugs). It would seem to me that the guy is probably older and has been using for a while. Thus he's tired (but he still waits in the car for drug deals). The fact he longs for clean teeth either hints at homelessness or past drug use of smoking crack or meth. She says she's glad they stopped "kissing the tar", which implies they've kicked the habit (at least temporarily), but now they feel hollow and they need something to kill the time so they drink instead. Many junkies do this when they quit smack. And now that the heroin is gone (which probably brought them together), she's afraid he'll leave her so she's asking him to stay. At least that's my theory. But I'm an ex-junkie, so what do I know? |

| I wish she would rerecord this or release it in better quality. It's hard to hear her over the loud music. | |
| Architecture in Helsinki – In Case We Die (Parts 1-4) Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| I always took the 'silver never gets golder' line to be more literal. Maybe he bought her a silver promise ring, but never proposed (with a gold/more expensive) like he always planned to when he meant the letters to be bolder. | |

| I'm pretty sure they're referring to the fact that the Sun IS a star. | |

| Lana Del Rey – Gods & Monsters Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| It's about heroin. She straight up says it in the line "Dope, shoot it up, straight to the heart please. I don't really wanna know what's good for me". You can scream metaphor all day long (and she may have several different meanings for this one) but she is clearly talking about addiction. She has someone getting shot up in several of her older videos, I think. That being said, this is my favorite song on the new album. But maybe that's cause I'm a junkie.... | |
| Lana Del Rey – Jump Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| Another one of her many songs filled with drug references (although she outright names them in this song). Seems like she's dated a lot of druggies, as well as battled her own addictions. She says she's reformed now, but as a junkie myself, it's just a matter of time before relapse occurs. Hope it doesn't mess up her music. | |
| Lana Del Rey – Pawn Shop Blues Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
The above comments are pretty good interpretations, but I think this one is about drug addiction. I know ya'll say she's a reformed bad girl (although her newer songs like Ride point to her being not-so-reformed, after all), but I think this was written when she was 'partying' a lot. I know from experience with heroin that when you run out of money you'll do just about anything to get your fix. That typically means selling stuff you already have to a pawn shop or stealing stuff to sell at a pawn shop. Hence 'the pawn shop blues'. Obviously she's having to sell stuff past boyfriends have given her, which is making her pretty depressed, but she's still alright with it if it ends with her to attaining "higher consciousness" (getting high). Also she doesn't say she's giving anything up for 'God', she say's "but I'd rather know what God knows". A lot of people feel like they are 'Gods' when they are high. Like they are invincible and somewhat all-knowing. She doesn't say she wants to please God, she wants to know what he knows (or be him). It also seems like her former boyfriend left her because of her addiction: "In the name of higher consciousness, I let the best man I knew go" That's my spin on things. Of course everything's skewed in the eyes of an addict. |

Whereas I definitely see how it could describe an unhealthy relationship, I see it as a better fit to drug abuse. I especially see it in this verse: "You left a stain On every one of my good days But I am stronger than you know I have to let you go" Looking back he sees he was on drugs in some of his best memories and how that left them 'stained'. And of course it takes a lot of strength to kick a serious drug addiction so he's telling the drug that he's strong enough to let it go. Also: "I can't live without you Tell me What am I supposed to do about it Keep your distance from me" Obviously he feels like he can't live without the drug and how can he possibly give it up. So he keeps his distance from it, to avoid temptation. Even the song title fits, as some consider addiction (especially alcoholism) a disease. I've never looked it up, but just listening to their albums quite a few of their songs seem to be about battling drug addiction. And seeing as most musicians struggle with some sort of drug abuse, I doubt I'm that far off. |

| The Script – The Man Who Can't Be Moved Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| The song is okay I guess, if a bit cheesy. The thing that really pertubs me, though, is it sounds a bit too much like Keane's 'Somewhere Only We Know'. | |

| Architecture in Helsinki – Hold Music Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Eh, I always thought this song was about sex and drugs. And music, obviously. Maybe I was wrong. It's just with the whole mention of needles, drinking, and 'dragons', it seems to be at least hinting at drugs. And the whole "give it to me baby, don't you dare lose it" screams sex to me. The 'don't you dare loose it' could be referring to the fact that he's having trouble staying aroused cause he's been drinking and smoking and shit. But then again, I could be waaayyy off. | |

| Amanda Palmer – Another Year: A Short History of Almost Something Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Whereas I see the whole 'afraid of romantic commitment' as a definite underlying meaning, I feel that the more obvious meaning she wants you to see is suicide. Amanda likes to make ambiguous songs, with obvious meanings and then underlying ones. As many of you have already pointed out, the underlying meaning to this one is probably Amanda's fear of letting herself fall in love. This is obvious in lines like: “I tried to fall in it again”, “I want my chest pressed to your chest, my nervous systems interfere”, “I'm not as callous as you think, I barely breath when you are near”, and “Can't we just wait together”. She is obviously afraid of getting hurt. She wants to be with someone, but ‘her nervous systems interfere’. In other words, her past failures keep her from putting herself out there. Her friends no longer try to get her to open up, because they know it’s pointless. She comforts herself with cigarettes and alcohol, even though she knows she is better off without them. She also argues that she has plenty of time left to find someone, so it’s okay if she just waits ‘another year’. The only problem with that is that one year tends to turn itself into many. The more obvious meaning, however, is about someone who keeps putting off killing themselves. Secretly they hope that their life will magically get better and the won't have to do it. Personally, I like the 2004 version a bit better because it leans more heavily towards this interpretation. In the 2004 version she says, "I'll find a coward just like me and we'll help each other disappear". This could be like a suicide pact. Sometimes people don't have the nerve to kill themselves alone, so they find someone to make 'pact' with so they are less likely to chicken out. Also, "a few more fake surrenders" seems like a reference to failed suicide attempts, like slitting your wrists or ODing on Tylenol. You know that probably isn't going to work, but you fool yourself into thinking that it will because you don't want to actually do something that has a guarantee fatality, because you don't REALLY want to die. One of the lines she replaces these lines with, "I'm getting smaller by degrees", also seems to be about suicide in that she feels herself slowly drifting away from her life and getting closer to death. As LadyGrey88 already pointed out, "My friends took bets and disappeared, they mime their sighing violins" is talking about how her friends mock her for her depression and suicidal tendencies. They take bets on how long it will take her to kill herself, or possibly when she'll give up the act and take back her life. I feel the first line, "I tried to fall in it again", could be a reference to an attempted suicide by drowning, but is more likely about her falling back into old habits of drinking or depression. "The winter makes things hard enough", is probably a nod to how a lot of people to kill themselves during the winter, because it tends to brings on depression. Runs in the Family also references this in the line, "My friend has problems with winter and autumn". She rationalizes that she has plenty of time left to kill herself and there is no big rush, so she just smokes and drinks her time away instead of getting up and doing something to better her life. The Point of it All also seems to reflect this theme of willing stagnation, whether in love, life, or death. |

| From First to Last – Populace in Two Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I've never been a big fan of theirs (expecially now that Sonny's gone), but my friend dargged me to a show of theirs once and this and Emily were the only songs that really stood out to me. I actually really like this song. I think it's their best. | |

“Window shoppers, potheads (?), and jesus freaks,…,…, garbage collectors. Come on guys…[?], ditch diggers, bone polishers, dog robbers, high divers, field nurses, [?] gutters, bootleggers” I think that’s some of what the guy in the background is saying. I can’t understand all of it and I’m not sure I’m right on all of what I have. He also says something about alligators and salt miners. I’m not sure. I wish someone had all the lyrics. |
