The Cowboy Junkies – Lay it down Lyrics 4 months ago
@allifield This is super insightful. "Sold most of what he cherished", sleeping in a "warm feather-bed" are very reminiscent of opioid addiction.

Richmond Fontaine – We Used to Think the Freeway Sounded Like a River Lyrics 2 years ago
https://www.oregonlive.com/music/2009/10/richmond_fontaines_willy_vlaut.html quotes songwriter Willy Vlautin. He lives next to Interstate 205, but says he fooled himself into seeing it in a positive light - the sunset over the overpass can make a pretty sight.\n\n"If you think about things the right way, they don\'t sound as bad,"\n\nAfter his apartment was trashed, he felt "All of a sudden, all living near the freeway means is I\'m a loser. I don\'t have enough money to live in a better, safer place."\n\nThe album is autobiographical and he says, "This one might be more straightforward. I was trying to be more honest with myself."

Joe Walsh – County Fair Lyrics 3 years ago
So he found a jigsaw puzzle, which turns out to be a picture of a county fair, where he found the puzzle, and the missing parts are still at the fair in the picture. He's not sure if he will ever complete the puzzle. What an amazing concept.

Elbow – The Loneliness of a Tower Crane Driver Lyrics 3 years ago
Although I have heard the song is not purely autobiographical, I suspect that the song, written by Elbow as they became very successful, is about the impact of ambition and success on personal relationships.

Guy Garvey said in interview with BBC manchester that the song was based on the story of a tower crane driver his brother had met in a pub, who "began the night boasting about how well paid he was [and] ended the night crying into his beer with lonleliness. Ambition, if pursued to the cost of everything else, can leave you high, dry and lonely". He also said it had a similar theme to "The Bones of You", and it was a good metaphor for ambition. Garvey mentioned that the latter song was autobiographical, about leaving someone behind while thinking that "work and your career is the only thing that's of any importance."

Levellers – The Road Lyrics 6 years ago
The Road puts a distance between a bad, decaying world of nations, cities and pollution, and an exiled, international group of musicians reconnecting with their roots by performing the music of their childhood. Very powerful.

Blur – Trimm Trabb Lyrics 7 years ago
The intro says: 1033 north west knoll drive CA90069 659 7812 3108

Seems to be a reference to Le Parc Suite Hotel in West Hollywood, fax number 310.659.7812, address 733 North West Knoll Drive CA 90059. I wonder if he wrote it there.

"In medias res" means to start in the middle. Apparently it's latin.

Radiohead – High and Dry Lyrics 11 years ago
The Bends appears to be an album about radiohead becoming famous quickly. The title song is about sudden fame, and the impact on life, and iron lung is about the song Creep that propelled them to fame. This song is about a person who achieves fame, self hatred, and envy. It uses the a similar metaphor of altitude / depth for fame. My assumption is that is about exactly the same topic as the bends - becoming famous and losing your friends. Radiohead has been left high and dry by their success.

Radiohead – All I Need Lyrics 12 years ago
I always thought this was (mainly) about a baby - the next act, waiting in the wings. Only with you because it has no other, it's mother is all that it needs. Also the lyric "lying in the reeds" could refer to the legend of Moses in the basket. However I can't explain the animal trapped in the hot car or "all the days" we chose to ignore - unless this is a reference to the environment and global warming (the future we choose to ignore, the hot car). I love the lyrics on In Rainbows.

Elbow – Grounds for Divorce Lyrics 13 years ago
Sorry, is it literal or not? You don't appear to know what the word means - I don't think the singer "literally" sleeps with a compass. I also don't think reading the press release that accompanied the album makes you the almighty expert on Elbow.

Jay-Z – 99 Problems Lyrics 13 years ago
So this moron had drugs in his boot, managed to get pulled over by a policeman, smart-mouthed him, the policeman found the drugs, and he writes a song to complain about how it happened cos he was "African". Glad to see the justice system in America is working, catching drug dealing criminals even when they try to play the race card. I guess he wrote this before he ended up with that talentless monster Beyonce, now he has 100 problems.

Blur – Trimm Trabb Lyrics 13 years ago
At the beginning he is saying 1033 West North Knoll drive, CA 90069, 659 7812 310, which seems to be very close to the address and phone number for leparc suites, a restaurant and hotel in West Hollywood (http://www.leparcsuites.com/leisure/restaurants.php). No idea what this means.

The Black Keys – Next Girl Lyrics 13 years ago
I think he's saying, essentially, that his ex-girlfriend was pretty but she was bad news. And his *next* girl won't be like that. Do you guys see where I'm coming from with that?

Interpol – The Heinrich Maneuver Lyrics 13 years ago
The title seems to be a joke based on the Heimlich Maneuver. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Q1kRnQQFpg&feature=related 1:10 - Paul says it's a joke. Paul also says the song is about a breakup, and about California. Interpol newsletter called the song a "twisted love song/ode to Cali" (probably California not Kali the hindu goddess). The video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ha_bppvZ0a8 seems to be more of a shot at vain hollywood actress types. I'm a huge fan of interpol - but I do think there's not much story behind their lyrics - they are impressionistic lyrics, rather than literal meanings.
