Pure Bathing Culture – Scotty Lyrics 10 years ago
The realization hit me earlier this evening that the main character of this song could actually be a boy.

This boy is in the process of growing into himself, and he's starting to realize he's different. He meets another guy named Scotty who causes something amazing to awaken inside of him. Being with Scotty is the first time he's felt at home and at peace. All of his prior romances (all of whom have been with women) have felt wrong and in-genuine somehow, and have failed to open up his heart, and he is realizing that Scotty is the person who is finally making him feel the feeling he has been dreaming about. He didn't see it coming, but being with Scotty is the most beautiful surprise he could have possibly discovered. His friends and family judge him and don't understand, but the force of their criticisms pales in comparison to the euphoric strength and sense of well-being he gets from being in his first ever healthy relationship, with Scotty. He has realized he is gay and this realization has suddenly caused his world to make sense and unfold in a wonderful new way.

This theory fits so beautifully, I don't think I'll ever be able to think of the song differently.

It makes me think of new fallen snow and the blinding sun reflecting off of it. Just...images. I love it.

This is going to sound totally out there, but here goes:

I'm writing a book about space travel, and I first heard this song when I was thinking about the book. The two ideas sort of got combined in my head. To me, the song is about leaving behind a confusing world and finding a new adventure. The heavy drums represent movement, like running away or flying away, and screaming with your eyes closed while doing so. As you break through the wind and the rain and you run out of tears, you find something new.

Sarah McLachlan – Hold On Lyrics 15 years ago
She does mention that in the song, too. Or something similar:
"Oh god if you're out there won't you hear me
I know that we've never talked before"

I think she is trying to say that even though the character in the song is not religious, she is asking God to let her dying lover into heaven anyway, just in case. Going through the emotions of losing someone can make people resort to faith, even if it's only for a while, just because it's so scary to see someone you love die.

Sarah McLachlan – Elsewhere Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree with everyone about this. Such a powerful song. Homosexuality definitely came to my mind within the first two or three listens of this song, although honestly I doubt it's what Sarah had in mind. It just happens to work wonderfully when interpreted that way, by coincidence. (Same with Adia.) I choose to think of the song in more general terms, about becoming yourself and finding the person in yourself that makes sense to you. One aspect of that person could be homosexuality. Just depends on what you want to take away from the song.

Vienna Teng – Harbor Lyrics 15 years ago
The verses are in 5/4.

The chorus is crazy, though. It starts with two measures of 6/4 (With the words "sail your" as a pick-up from the last measure of the verse). Then there's a measure of 4/4, and then a measure of 3/4 and then a measure of 4/4 and then a measure of 2/4 which serves as the pickup into the next measure of 6/4 as the cycle starts again.

I suppose you could combine the 4/4 and the 2/4 into a measure of 6/4. Maybe that's how it's written. Somehow it's more natural for me to think of it the other way since the articulation of the piano changes so much right there. I'm no music theorist though, so who knows. xD

Vienna Teng – St. Stephen's Cross Lyrics 15 years ago
I think it's about two people witnessing an amazing event that will change everyone's lives. They are absorbed in the excitement of it all and don't know what to do next. But since the two people seem to be lovers, they will find a new life together. I love this song so much.

Melissa Etheridge – Mama I'm Strange Lyrics 15 years ago
Love this song. It conveys the feeling of being out of place, being different from everyone else in a way that society dislikes, and how that affects your confidence. It's about feeling like you have no innocence because you enjoy something that others see as perverse and feeling sorry for yourself even though there's probably nothing wrong with it. And having to deal with your parents' judgment.

Melissa Etheridge – How Would I Know Lyrics 15 years ago
Maybe I'm going way too dark with this, but it sounds to me like she is talking about someone (a friend) who has committed suicide. She's asking this friend how she was supposed to know of his/her intentions. I think the 'paradise in the next hello' is referring to the afterlife that the friend is wanting to reach.

I suppose the 'next hello' could also be interpreted more literally. Maybe the friend was actually a lover who left her to meet someone new and start a new relationship, without much explanation.

Within Temptation – Utopia Lyrics 15 years ago
I think that the chorus of the song is clearly talking about how humans tend to screw things up for themselves. We could have a perfect world, but we always end up ruining it somehow because it's in our nature.

The verses are a sort of break-up story, talking about two people who were lovers but have to go their separate ways. They both have a different idea of what their perfect world is. ("You're holding my hand but you don't understand. So where I am going you won't be in the end.") THIS is why humans can never create a perfect world: We all have a different idea of what perfection is, so as we all try to reach our own Utopia, we naturally get pulled apart in the process because we all are looking for something different. There is no cure for mankind; we all have to do what is right for ourselves individually, even if it means saying goodbye to people at the fork in the road. We are all searching for answers, and they are not given for free because we all have different questions.

That's what I got out of it, anyway. Beautiful, beautiful song.

I always interpreted the song like this:
The world has so many problems (political, social, moral, take your pick) but instead of trying to fix them, we just wait around, hoping things will be better in heaven. I think Sarah is doubting whether that will really happen, and wondering whether human beings should make the Earth itself a better place, rather than waiting to be delivered to one.

Sort of an athiest point of view, but that's how I have always thought of this song.

I think this is about coming to a point in your life when nothing seems to work out, and the only thing you can do is let go and let the current take you wherever it goes.

Sarah McLachlan – Adia Lyrics 16 years ago
Interestingly, this song could easily be interpreted as being about a lesbian relationship even without the "finger" line. It could be about two women, one of which (Adia) feels guilty for being a lesbian. She feels like she has lost her innocence for being in a relationship that society wouldn't approve of, and the singer is trying to comfort her and make her realize that no crimes have been committed. This is how I like to think of this song, and I DONT think that the "finger" line is sexual at all.

I'm sure it's not what Sarah had in mind, but thats just the way art works sometimes.

Vienna Teng – City Hall Lyrics 16 years ago
I saw Vienna perform, and before playing this she said she wanted to write a song about gay marriage that wasn't too political or preechy, so she wrote about the happiness that someone feels when they find someone they want to spend the rest of their life with- something that everyone can relate to. And she made clear references to San Fransisco, of course.

Vienna Teng – My Medea Lyrics 16 years ago
I saw Vienna perform, and she said that this song was about her years working with Software because they were a hard time in her life when she felt like she was undermining her own life and working against herself and her own beliefs. She drew a parallel between those feelings and the story of Medea.

Great song, no matter how you interpret it.

Regina Spektor – Folding Chair Lyrics 16 years ago
I love this song.
Although Regina has no idea what a dolphin actually sounds like. The sound she is making is actually a seal or a sea lion (they bark), where as a dolphin makes a high-pitched cackling sound. I wonder if she made that mistake on purpose to say something about the character in the song. It's funny either way.

Regina Spektor – Samson Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this is a "what-if" story about what would have happened if Samson had not destroyed the columns in the Philistine temple. In the story, Samson kills the people who mocked him by destroying the columns that held up the ceiling in a temple where he was held captive, killing himself and everyone in it.

But if Delilah had actually fallen in love with him (and not betrayed him), and if Samson had not brought the columns down, the bible would not have mentioned them. It would have been a love story, not a tragedy, and the history books would have forgotten them.

Beautiful song.

The song is definitely "Malchick Gei" because that is what it says on the album cover <.< There is no reason to listen closely and interpret it. It is right there in the title!!

It is about a girl who thought she was a lesbian but then fell in love with a gay boy. Listen to "Loves Me Not" from the next album. It is a different spin on the same story.

aj20657, I think you're exactly right. The line "And I won't tell anyone, that I love robot" especially gives it away.

I love this song so much. This is the kind of song that makes you want to learn Russian.
I think its about a funeral. One of the girls was...killed maybe? By a homophobe? ("Traitors, cowards") And it says that life will continue, without you and with you. And somehow, in the midst of this horrible ordeal, the survivor finds herself. Very pretty song.

I always thought that this song was about gays/lesbians and how they face difficulties with society. They are comparing homosexuals to monkeys because that is how some people see them.

That would explain lines like "honest psychos don't need healing" (gays shouldn't be taught to be straight) And "Monkeys will live in prison" (its an exaggeration of the lack of rights and acceptance gays have). "Love for everyone and anguish for monkeys" would also fit this theory. Monkeys/gays are not allowed to love. (again, its an exaggeration).

Does that make sense? That is always how I took it.
