I think of Steve as a prophet, not in any biblical sense but the information and honesty and real lessons in his music has actually changed my life , i\'ve been a fan a real long time, I\'m kinda old and many things i know today, seriously I learned when Steve would mention it in a song and I\'d look it up. He does his homework and He\'s a brilliant dude. \nI will say again real fans of Steve already know, it\'s more than the music. |

Im a middle aged white guy, I've never got that with this song. I've loved it since it came out. This is my era. Never thought of it in such a broad sense. My daughter (25) says this is the one song that reminds her most of me. Blue eyes, anger, resentment, sadness, living a double life, etc. So I identify with it in my own way. Now, I just kinda think it's cool. |

I don't know, perhaps we have something a little darker here. Billy might be a sick fuck, taking out his resentments on his past nemesis' children. |

Irony is the correct term, I think. I know this, Im old, I heard of the EEls from my youngest daughter who is 16. I loved the sentiment the elephant, the reference to that damn Indian, so forth. I went on to look at/listen to/read the other Eels songs, they have several with an ironic feel. I'm a country music fan but this is art, real art. They remind me of the beatniks, attitude, the icy coolness of it. Also kinda made me think of a little know australian band called Flash and the Pan. Awesome, artsy, nice. |

Dude, this song bites. It's stupid, it shows weakness for bitches. Show me anyone who thinks about sex that much, that adoringly and I'll show you a weak, easily manipulated trick. Man up! people. |

I think y'all are over analyzing this song, it's about a girl, a girl that did him wrong and he still pursued her, she'd spend his money on dope, she'd fuck guys with cool cars, and all for what reason..?? Because he was a compromise, not her first choice, not valuable enough to worry about losing. |

"Jesus Christ Died for nothing, I suppose" Great big beautiful sad artistic line. Love John Prine. Actually heard him speak about this song, said it was based on not one but several soldiers he knew in Vietnam that came back screwed up. add that observation to a creative mind, and there you go, one of the most recognizable songs ever. |

Well, I too only assumed it was about smoking grass, mostly because I smoke grass and get a smile no matter the situation, ya'll may all be right, these songs are so very good, so very meaningful because they can and will mean something different and important to everyone who gets the opportunity to appreciate them, I've been hearing this guy's work for years and he is great both as a writer and performer, if you aint seem him live, you've missed a funny, thoughtful, musical entertainer. I love this song now Fire that thing up. |

There is so much going on here, I think it must refer to some actual experience, either the writer's or someone he knows of, seems to tell a story of the comedy/tragedy type. |

I have been to prison, in fact years ago I spent a long time there. Wherever this idea came from, it had to have come from the mind of an ex-convict. It is exactly how the holidays are in prison, the big light does go round with the gun, so many little ideas in here that can only come from experience, thats all, gem indeed, great artist great stuff. |

I'm new, this is, in fact, my first comment. I feel a personal relationship with steve earle, i been a huge fan for several years, yes after first being exposed to copperhead road, I have since seen the guy live every time he comes this way, i think, I got every record he's made on disc as well as the pc, If you pay close attention, your favorites will change alla time, he's got like twenty five years of great thought provoking, intelligent, meaning rock and roll, bluegrass, country, rockabilly, etc. I also have a nice collection of steve earle written songs, interpreted by other artists. That is a surprisingly diverse mixture of artists, i think the guy is the most underrated artist ever. But share with everyone you know, maybe steve will hit the mainstream, make loads of real money and come to tyhe westcoast more often..haha |
