Randy Travis – Three Wooden Crosses Lyrics 14 years ago
It's a clever song.

Firstly, forget the driver (or the other passengers.)

The early song sets up the characters- 3 "righteous" people, and a "fallen" person.

The early implication is that 4 people died, but only three were felt "worthy" of the cross as a memorial (which the singer questions.) I think thats the part people might find "disagreeable" - but thats the think, there is a twist.

It turns out the hooker was NOT killed, and in fact, survived to raise her child as a Christian, who became a preacher.

It's about redemption.

The one lyric I don't get though is the one about "Two of them were lookng for lost souls."

We can assume it's the preacher and the hooker whom this refers to. (In order, the farmer is heading for his vacation, the teacher for higher education.)

In what way is a hooker searching for lost souls???

Well sung, but sung as part of a competition and then released to make money. For discussion about meaning, check out the original artists page.

Snow Patrol – Run Lyrics 15 years ago
It is a funeral song. Perhaps not suicide, but more generally about young/tragic/early death.

"I'll sing it one last time for you
Then we really have to go" The idea (echoed throughout the song) that this is the "last goodbye."

"Light Up" could mean "we need to get over this, and feel happy- what else can we do?"

....

Alternativly light up is a reference to smoking, especially cannabis, although that hardly fits th rest of the lyrics. Could be about someone sad about a break up who smokes drugs to help him or her remember the good times.

Pet Shop Boys – It's A Sin Lyrics 15 years ago
"Turned over a new leaf, and then torn right through it"

That line has some rather shocking sexual undertone, suggests violent penetration and sodomy.

The Police – Every Breath You Take Lyrics 15 years ago
This is often claimed to be about stalking.

I don't think it literally about stalking, rather it is about obsession with someone, in this case most likely an ex-wife due to the "vows you break" line.

The Police – Roxanne Lyrics 15 years ago
This is a simple one. Its a song from the perspective of a boyfriend of a (former) prostitute who no longer wants her to work as a prostitue.

The "put on the red light" is a metaphor for going out selling sexual services. It originally came from the habit that prostitutes had of displaying a red lamp in the outside window of hotel rooms etc to indicate that they were available for clinets. From this we get the term "Red light district" which means a sleasy area of town, generally where prostitutes ply their trade.

Iron Maiden – 2 Minutes To Midnight Lyrics 15 years ago
"Kill the unborn in the womb" certainly COULD be taken to be a reference to abortion. However, in the context of the song it is about people starting wars which the next generation (the unborn) will fight and die in. I think one of the key lines is " We oil the jaws of the war machine and feed it with our babies. " It basically means that politicians, and the people in general, are being fed political ideas that lead to increasing tensions and conflicts, that will cause to the deaths of future generations.

" As the madmen play on words and make us all dance to their song,
To the tune of starving millions to make a better kind of gun. " This is a direct reference to governments who invest heavily in weapons development (arms races etc) while millions starve.

It also makes direct reference to Belsen- a Nazi Concentration Camp, and Napalm, used heavily in Vietnam.

Al Stewart – Year Of The Cat Lyrics 15 years ago
Year of the cat is once every 12 years, next one being in 2011- this is from Vietnamese astrology. At leats that is what a You Tube clip of this says.

It is certainly about a seductive woman a man meets on holiday- she could well be a prostitue. The "hidden door" seems to suggest this, and the general carefree nature of her business is made clear in the lyrics- like a river runnings through. Also the references to perfumes suggest a "commerical" love affair.

Scorpions – Wind Of Change Lyrics 15 years ago
Yeah, it is about the fall of the Berlin Wall, the end of Russian communism and the hopefully, upbeat feeling that was in the air at the time. Now, 19 years later, those hopes have failed to come true. Europe still remains divided, even within the EC. Racial, and religious, tensions still haunt Europe, and the Alexander Litvinenko incident is... worrying.

So listering to this, there are hopes, but hopes that were not to come true. The tone at the end sort of implies that, too, sort of a bit sad.

Billy Bragg – Sexuality Lyrics 15 years ago
It's a subtle song, a few meanings. A lot of the references are to sexual FANTASY. Also it deals with low self esteem regarding his body- in the video Kirsty MacColl makes a "small penis" sign with her fingers, and the people are laughing behind his back.

There are also some rather clear masturbation references. "I feel a total jerk, before your naked body of work." "Stop playing with yourselves."

The Mitsubishi Zero/Robert Di Niro references which follow immediatly after are to a certain kind of over the top, flash type of man.. the clever implication is that he is a wanker!

One of those odd songs that carries a serious meaning, but is totally ruined by an inappropriate catchy tune, and contstant play on the radio and in shops etc.

Pet Shop Boys – Can You Forgive Her? Lyrics 15 years ago
A fairly obvious one, this. A man who is in love with a woman, who also feels sexual attraction to men. His love for the woman is platonic, his attraction to men is sexual, and he is ashamed of it, and she knows it.

Pet Shop Boys – Rent Lyrics 15 years ago
I thought it was "poppet" too.

the clear implication here is homosexuality, most obviously rent boys.

On recent tour performances Neil sings "You pay my rents" with an s on the end. Not sure why.

Pet Shop Boys – Always On My Mind Lyrics 15 years ago
Given the movie clip that it part of the video too, there seems to be a fairly open gay element to this.

Art Garfunkel – Bright Eyes Lyrics 15 years ago
Its quite clearly about death. The images, most obviously Bright Eyes burning, suddenly burn so pale implies young, unexpected death- people at who are full of life, and then suddenly it all ends. This is about the confusion that comes with death, the unexplained- and unexplicable nature of it all.

As such, to me this is about young, sudden death- I heard it played at a funeral for a student who was killed in a cycle accident.

I also remember at an outdoor funeral for a young suicide- who I had discussed this very song with- the wind echoed in the trees, justr like in this song. Spooky.

Mike Oldfield – Moonlight Shadow Lyrics 16 years ago
My favourite song of all time.

However, I feel it is really just an artisitic creation rather than having any SPECIFIC meaning. IE Mike sat down to create an dwrite a good song, and worked from there. Very talented performer, and a great choice of female vocalist.

The meaning it carries to me is about the last days of summer- I don't know why, really just that feeling when nights are drawing in, a little bit sad and melancholy- Moonlight of course implies longer nights, so maybe thats where I get the impression from.

Bob Dylan – When the Ship Comes In Lyrics 16 years ago
The lyrics " When Pharoh's tribe.. and Like Goliath.. "
are of course old testament references, both of which imply the triumph of the oppressed over the dominant.

The Smiths – There Is a Light That Never Goes Out Lyrics 16 years ago
"and in the darkened underpass
I thought Oh God, my chance has come at last
but then a strange fear gripped me
and I just couldn't ask"

I alays interpreted these lyrics as being about approaching a prostitue, but losing the nerve at the last minute. There are a lot of prostitutes in Manchester, where the Smiths are from.

Elvis Costello – Oliver's Army Lyrics 16 years ago
Its an anti-military song. Oliver is certainly Oliver Cromwell, but the phrase "Oliver's Army" is just a very loosly used slang term.

Its critical of the military, and parodies their advertising " There is no danger, its a professional career" etc- as relevant in 2008 as it ever was.

Controversial and sometimes editted-
" Only takes one itchy trigger
One more widow, one less white nigger "

"white nigger" in this context isn't a racial term, it means a person who is doing someone elses dirty work. One more widow, one less soldier doing someone elses dirty work.

Simon and Garfunkel – April Come She Will Lyrics 16 years ago
I remember reading that this is actually a folk song based on the life of a bird- a Cookoo (spelling?) I think.

It is born in April, young in May, June she will change her tune- looking for a mate etc, singing as birds do in June, July she will fly- in this case literally, then die in august as it gets cold.

The metaphore is of course a summer love affair- and it is totally brilliant.

Used in the movie "The Graduate" , one of the simplest, and most beautiful and moving songs I have ever heard.
