Jethro Tull – Son Lyrics 7 years ago
@[Fuzzbean:27104] Fair enough, and I appreciate the thoughtful response. I have never read anything of Anderson's intended meaning, but my hunch says if he meant a monotheistic god, he wouldn't have used the definite article ("...I'm MY father's son..."). He'd have found a clever lyric to indicate the "father" isn't necessarily his but the god/gods of the Abrahamic religions. Furthermore, if he were to include all the other religions, indicating the chance of being born into the "fully accurate religion" the lyrics would have been more holistic. Probably. Maybe. Possibly.

Just my $0.02.

Sufjan Stevens – Djohariah Lyrics 12 years ago
This song just hit home hard for me; a darling young girl in my family was just beaten to a pulp by her "boyfriend." She certainly doesn't need that man in her life. I want to kill him, and I'm in a position to, but I'm afraid that would only make it that much worse.

It's Ian Anderson mocking his abusive father. When Anderson was young, he wasn't interested in sports - his more delicate sensibilities caused his father to believe Anderson was gay. Anderson's father would beat him for it, on suspicion alone.

See also the lyric in "Wind Up" that goes, "How do you dare to tell me that I'm my father's son, when that was just an accident of birth?"

Elliott Smith – In the Lost and Found (Honky Bach) Lyrics 17 years ago
"I don't feel afraid to die."

Elliott speaks to me to this day. I relate to lines like that with frightening consistency.

Reminds me of the line in Kings Crossing: "I can't prepare for death any more than I already have"

Chilling. Real. Prophetic. No one here gets out alive.

Elliott Smith – A Fond Farewell Lyrics 17 years ago
It _is_ a drugs and suicide song. Most of "Basement" is comprised of such songs. But nobody made depression and drugs and suicide as beautiful to listen to as ES.

Eels – My Descent Into Madness Lyrics 17 years ago
i have been where this song describes. i have been committed. it's exactly the way this song makes it sound. they dope you up into a cocoon of med induced passiveness. every day seems the same.

i've lived half my life in the frame of mind that this song illustrates. i'm not sure what it means, but i feel it.

this is one of three songs i want played at my funeral.
