Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – New Morning Lyrics 17 years ago
But there's also the recognition that entering the light entails some terrible sacrifice. It seems he views the new dawn as inevitable and ultimately beneficial but still with a sense of melancholy.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Idiot Prayer Lyrics 17 years ago
There's no murder here. it's about the dichotomy of salvation and love when your lover falls short of salvation. My reading was always that the singer is bitterly mocking his lover but recently I've become unsure.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Swing Low Lyrics 17 years ago
The fact that a song of this quality was left off an album like Nocturama is a supreme testament to the exquisite quality of NC&TBS. This would constitute a masterpiece for the vast majority of bands operating not just today but for the past 30 years. Unbelievable!!

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Where the Wild Roses Grow (feat. Kylie Minogue) Lyrics 17 years ago
elmidio,
Yes, it's pretty sad. In fact, on Saturday night, SBS are screening a series titled 'Great Australian Albums' and they're featuring Murder Ballads. I don't even want to watch it, but I know I will. Why couldn't they choose Tender Prey or Abattoir Blues or Your Funeral, or anything but Murder Ballads?

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Up Jumped the Devil Lyrics 17 years ago
That's the beauty of this song. It starts almost cartoonish with the whole
"I was born on the day
That my poor mother died
I was cut from her belly
With a stanley knife
My daddy did a jig
With the drunk midwife"
and the devil bit but then at the end it's really quite chilling:
"Up jumped the Devil and he took my soul from me"
and
"Down we go
For Eternity"

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – The Sorrowful Wife Lyrics 17 years ago
"I made her a promise I could not deliver"
Well there's the key to the song right there. He said he would or wouldn't so something but he didn't or did and she's suffering for it. He feels for her pain but at the same time he wants her to help him avoid temptation. These line:
"A loose wind last night blew down
Black trees bent to the ground
Their blossoms made such a sound
That I could not hear myself think babe"
Are simply amazing. Especially the way he delivers them.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Hallelujah Lyrics 17 years ago
You've pretty much got it Starfighter. It's just about leaving safety, being drawn towards temptation and eventually escaping it. Probably to do with drugs, but that's not necessary for an accurate interpretation. The 'Hallelujah' in the chorus is incredibly intriguing since it sounds so mournful, yet is a joyous word. I get the feeling that's the whole point.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – And No More Shall We Part Lyrics 17 years ago
How on earth do you get a murder-suicide from that? This whole album's about last chances. The bloke's dropped the ball and he's hoping and praying that he doesn't do it again and promising somebody that he won't. There's something that's been dragging him away from the one he loves and in this song he's promising that it'll never do that again. Knowing Nick's history you'd have to think its about getting into drugs or booze again. The 'free' in that case would be freedom from addictions. I think Murder Ballads has done some serious damage to the way people interpret his songs.

El-P – Run the Numbers Lyrics 17 years ago
"weak in the kneesy species
dreaming of future faded
seen where the suture stitches knitted slipped?
i'm with you baby
lets get obnoxious with it
i wanna know what brave is
i'm tired of sitting here pretending i'm not fucking dangerous"

This is a call to arms you fucking leeches!!!!

Really doubt it mate. I think Nick Cave's a bit beyond writing songs about how bad cocaine is. But if it works for you, go with it.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Opium Tea Lyrics 17 years ago
I've always thought this song was about rehab. Don't know for sure but it seems like the Opium Tea is something they use to wean people off.

These lines especially make me think rehab:
I'm a prisoner here, I can never go home
There is nothing here to win or lose
There are no choices need to be made at all
Not even the choice of having to choose

I'm a prisoner yes, but I'm also free
'Cause am what I am and what will be will be
I'm a prisoner here but I'm also free

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Mercy Lyrics 17 years ago
Gotta be one of my favourite Cave songs. The desperation is insane. The John the Baptist inspiration is obvious but I tend to think Cave puts more than a little of himself into the character as well.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Fifteen Feet of Pure White Snow Lyrics 17 years ago
I wouldn't totally dismiss the cocaine idea but given this fella's general oeuvre, I think spiritual torment/isolation's more likely. He can't contact God because he's under 15 Feet of Pure White Snow. If you look at "Raise your hands up to the sky" etc. and also Mary, Matthew, John...the first time I heard this song I jumped to cocaine as well and it's possible, but Nick doesn't really seem to do drug songs as such. Finally, the last lines, "save yourself, help yourself" seem to be screamed at an evangelist to me.
