This song is amazing. It's almost perfect. However, I've always admired both Sculptured and Agalloch's use of film samples, but this is not one of those times. That excessively long sample nearly wrecks this song for me. |

The woman in the video is Tina Kanarek. I was actually sort of sad to find out that it wasn't really her singing. And it's not Jack White, it's a fan that won some sort of contest. |

I heard it was about some guy trying to carjack him, and he tried to run the guy over and got away or something. If true, it makes this song even more awesome. |

This is one of those songs that I rarely listen to, not because it isn't a decent song, but because it's just too good to listen to very often. I heard it on 'The Mantle' when the album first came out, I guess eight years ago. I remember hearing this song, and thinking 'oh yes, pretty melody, unrequited love, pain, isolation, that's nice.' Eight years later I understand it. I wish I didn't. |

I totally think it's facetious, considering that the song is followed up by a cover of 'Angry Inch.' Anyway, I know Peter was a bit distraught over the fact that he may have been oggled by more men than women, but I think he doesn't realize the service that he did for heterosexual girls everywhere. There aren't enough pictures in the world of long-haired music gods with raging erections. |

The bit that goes 'met you while you were switching on/ and checked your box on the blue coupon' makes me think of a mail order sex robot. But it doesn't make any sense in the context of the rest of the song, so scrap that. |

Fuck this shit, bring back the songs about crazy pagan sex in the woods and lechery. I do have to begrudgingly admit though, the songs does have killer riffs. |

I never noticed the heavy, rhythmic moaning in the beginning of this song until I listened to it under my headphones this morning. So very dirty. I love this song. |

"I know that the lift can be painfully slow, so I'm happy to leave by the window." Lines like this are why I love this band. It hints at suicide and helplessness without sounding trite and stupid. So clever and darkly comical, but sad at the same time. |

I am kind of stumped with this one too, other than I get this weird sort of ritualistic pagan-ish feeling from the song. It makes me think of men in the woods that are part of a cult performing rites involving seasonal changes, but other than that...really, I haven't an idea. Maybe I'll just go with the default meaning of Porcupine Tree songs and say it's really about serial killers. |

So songs that are 'sweet and kind' aren't genuine? In order for something to have complexity, is must be about death, murder and rape? The thing I love about Porcupine Tree is that they can take a mundane subject and express it with a poetic succinctness that few other artists are capable of. It doesn't matter what the subject is- suicide, murder, love, loss, substance abuse, etc. Where other musicians come off sounding trite and cliched, Porcupine Tree succeeds. So what if the song is about sex in a non-violent setting, and so what if people perceive it that way? It doesn't mean they don't 'have the mental capacity' to see deeper into the song.
And in any case, if one desperately wants to read into this song as containing violence, it would almost sound like it's not the narrator it's coming from. "Watch my breathing slow," "let the salt (blood?) flow, feel my coil unwind."
In any case, now I am just bullshitting, because I see this song as being a recollection of warm, erotic memories. There are plenty of other songs on the album that are obviously about murderers to enjoy, but this isn't one of them. |

Awww, don't worry guys, the patriarchy is still firmly in place, and it will take more than one measly little song to topple it. You can all sleep at night and continue feeling safe when you walk down the streets alone at night. Now go look up Cannibal Corpse's lyrics, and shut the fuck up. |

It is 'useless fucking hope,' but in the booklet the lyrics just say 'useless hope.' Improv maybe? Perhaps he was feeling particularly volatile that day. |

I think a lot of the lyrics point to it being about Christ. According to a lot of sources, he was about 33 when he died. Also, it may have to do with how his original teaching were distorted into what we know as Christianity today- the lyrics "For the record, no one will understand what it is all about" especially support this. "It is a promise of a lifetime never recorded." Because of the fact that the gospels were actually written years after his death, we can only speculate about some of what happened in his lifetime. If you watch the video with this in mind, it actually makes more sense. |
