| Marilyn Manson – Snake Eyes And Sissies Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I think the central theme to this track is how try to make ourselves stronger by denying our mortality. He uses allusions, paradoxes, and metaphors to express this denial. The "milk and genocide" is a paradox of life and death. Youth and demise. "Messianic peter pan" conveys the idea that one can only be strong if they live forever. Likewise, Peter Pan was a young boy who never grew old. The conflict comes when he realizes that the price of fame is loss of manhood which is the essence of his being. Therefore, he exclaims I'm "just a little fucking boy. I could never be a man." This is the tragedy of the song. All in all, the title is a statement that we should not let our lives be decided by a simple roll of the dice or "snake eyes". We must decide our fate or else we are just "sissies" with broken knees constantly bowing in acquiesence. Great song. Some of the same ideas appear in Strange Same Dogma. | |
| Marilyn Manson – Suicide Snowman Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| this song is about tranformation. it shares alot of the same themes as the other song learning to swim. basically the snow represents death and non-growth. therefore, the suicide snowman is a person killing parts of themselves because they have realized that they can't "kill the world". I love this song it's so poetic. | |
| Marilyn Manson – Disposable Teens Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| This is a beautiful song that aims to explain the root of teenage angst. Judging from the lyrics it arises from the opressive aspects of religion, bad parenting, and treating today's youth like worthless or "disposable" beings who have no other purpose than to entertain us. The chorus of the song is a slight modification of the chorus from the Beatles track titiled "Revolution" found on the White Album. Another refernce is to George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty Four. It is shown in the comment "rebel from the waist downwards". Anyway, I really like this song because it makes a statement about society while upholding the rebellious spirit that rock and roll was founded on. | |
| Marilyn Manson – New Model No. 15 Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Since the meaning of the song has already been described. I'll describe the number fifteen. The number fifteen is a reference to Omega, a theme Manson relies on through the mechanical animals album. The fifteenth letter in the english alphabet is O. That's why he keeps using the number fifteen. | |
| Marilyn Manson – Posthuman Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Posthuman is a song that tries to make a statement about pop culture through history, literature, and other metaphors. The statement "God is just a statistic" is a modified version of the statement "sanity is a statistic", which first appeared in George Orwell's 1984. Basically, Manson is trying to say that God (the idea of God) can be manipulated to mean anything just like statistics. She got eyes like Zapruder mouth like heroin The Zapruder film was shows the footage of JFKs assasination. Basically Manson uses the Zapruder as a metaphor for society's fascination with death. The heroin mouth conveys the idea that the media and their words are infectious which causes the masses to take every word they say as truth. She wants me to be perfect like Kennedy Showing how Kennedy was martyred after his death. He was seen as the embodiment of the America idea. Show me the dead stars All of them sing The American celebrity is deadened and fake. Although they "sing" in front of the cameras they are "dead" inside. This is a riot Religious and clean The riot is the mass exploitation in the media. The reference to religion being "clean" is a sarcastic statement. Contrarily, he's trying to point out that religion is the exact opposite of clean. God is a number you cannot count to He's trying to say that the idea of God is beyond scientific reason. You are posthuman and hardwired Basically, the vast majority of Americans are "posthuman" meaning they have died already (in the intellectual and emotional sense). Moreover, they are conditioned to blindly follow whatever they are told like "hardwired" computers. She's pilgrim and pagan Softworn and so-cial This is a stab at the hypocrites who say they are one thing but act like someone else. In all of her dreams She's a saint like Jackie-O Being a saint is an unrealistic idea to have. Therefore, we dream about being perfect like "Jakie-O" (JFK's wife). "All that glitters is cold, all that glitters is cold." Obviously, this is a play on the common cliche: "All that glitters aint gold". Manson replaced the word "gold" with "cold" to point out that decadence and materialism is saturated with death but most people are too blind to realize it. Overall, I didn't like this song too mush but I do like the message it conveys. A lot of the references in this song reemerge on Holy Wood. I think he should have put it on that album instead of Mechanical Animals. |

| Marilyn Manson – Cyclops Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Cyclops is Manson's attack on mainstream America. He uses the metaphor of a superficial woman to describe the narrow minded views of the American "world". The title could be areference to James Joyce's novel Ulysses. A chapter in the novel titled Cyclops describes the narrow minded views of a character named "Citizen". cyclops woman got one eye in her head mascara-clotted vision she is fed Basically America tries to cover up its ugliness with false beauty. "cyclops woman dying in her shell guilt got her trapped in nailed in well" He basically saying that our culture dies more everytime we close ourselves to new forms of expression. The "guilt" is a reference to religion, which could prevent free expresssion. "cyclops woman is the eye of the world" These lyrics are meant highlight the egocentrism and hipocrisy in mainstream America. The egocentrism is shown by the fact that Manson says that cyclops is the "eye of the world". Likewise most mainstream American entertainment presents a very condensed and western version of things rather than a global view. "who's reflection is the retina?" Images in the retina are inverted. Therfore, Manson was trying to say that if maistream America took the time to look in the mirror they would realize that they are the exact opposite (inverted) of the wholesome image they try to convey through the media. dialate, dialate Pupils dialate when they see something that they fear or like. Basically, Manson's refrain is his way saying that people thrive on the exploitation in today's media. I feel Portrait of An American Family is Manson's most socially conscious ablum. The message in this song parallels with the message of other songs on his ablum which was to uncover the underlying hypocrisy in American culture. The song isn't as creative as most of his other songs but it's okay. |

| Marilyn Manson – Learning To Swim Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Learning to Swim is a song that is far more complex than it's given credit for. I feel this song is about when Manson first came to the realization that he was a "rock star". I interpreted the lyrics as follows: "I wanna be the fish. I like the way he swims." This is a retrospective statement from his childhood. The "fish" is a rockstar. Maybe David Bowie (someone he idolized in his youth). He wants to live or "swim" like he does. "I bend my arms to fins. Ego scales my skin." This is about him going through an outward and internal transformation. He probably felt this was necessary to be a rockstar. When he "bends his arms to fins" he is saying that he looks the part. When he says "ego scales my skin" he's describing his new found confidence. Something that he never had before. "I grab a sharp stick And I cut my gills." These two lines can be interpreted to ways. Manson is known for cutting himself on stage. Particularly around his ribs. This could be his way of describing this act. Another more philosophical interpretation could be that he feels that a certain amount of pain must be endured before he becomes the person he wants to be. This idea parallels with the teachings of Friedrich Nietzsche, someones who's teachings are prevalent in much of his work (especially Antichrist Superstar). "The water rushes in I'm too young to live this life." This is the point when his dream becomes a reality. The "water" is meant to symbolize the fans. The fans "rush in" like water and give him (the fish) the life that he always wanted. "I'm too young to live this life." This is pretty much self explanitory. Manson started the band in 1989, so he was about twenty years old. This is just past the threshold between adolescene and adulthood; therefore, he is saying that everything is happened much faster than he anticipated. He probably didn't expect such success until later in life. This is why he feels that he is too "young". "They want me to stay. This life I cannot feign." These two lines are the most important in that they signify that the transformation has been complete. The life he choose probably stood in stark contrast to his previous life; for this reason, he probably seemed like a different person to those who knew him before he was famous. They probably want him to "stay" the way he is but he proclaiming that he never was the person that they percieved him to be. Because of this he no longer can "feign" the existence that he grew up accepting. Altogether the song is somewhat of a condensed version of the revolutionary message Manson tried to convey with the Antichrist Superstar, Mechanical Animals, Holywood trilogy. I hope this review helps his fans look at this song in a different way. |

| Nirvana – Lithium Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Aside from the obvious fact that this song derives its title from the drug used to treat bi polar disorder, I discovered a deeper meaning. I interpreted the lyrics as follows: This song goes in depth to describe the apathy and recklessness that drugs like lithium cause. The "friends" in his head are hallucinations. When he says "I'm so ugly that's Ok, cause so are you" I believe this is his way of saying everything seems uniform when under the infuence of drugs. Moreover, lithium is a mood stabilising drug. "Broke our mirrors" The mirrors mentioned are meant to symbolize vanity. Therefore, when he says "broke our mirrors" he is actually talking about destroying his own conscience or the end of the self-conscience. "Sunday mornin is every day" I felt this was a reference to the fact that sunday is called the day of rest. If sunday mornin is every day it could mean he stays in bed every day as if it were sunday. "For all I care and I'm not scared Light my candles in a daze 'Cause I've found God" These lines show how lithium (or the absence of it) has given him feelings of invincibility. That's why he is unfraid. Lighting candles in a daze it a risky act which could result in a fire but the lithium frees him from his inhibitions. The God he speaks of is not the Christain God. Actually I felt he was talking about the lithium itself. He used God as a metaphor for lithium because it was the only thing he felt he could rely on when he felt down. "I like you I miss you I kill you" Pretty much textbook bi polar disorder. "I'm not gonna crack" This is him having withdrawal symptoms because he has become heavily dependent on drugs. Basically, he trying to convince himself that he's bigger than the lithium pill. An internal struggle. "I'm so lonely, that's OK I shaved my head and I'm not sad And just maybe I'm to blame For all I've heard but I'm not sure I'm so excited, I can't wait To meet you there and I don't care I'm so horny, that's OK My will is good" He exploring the range of emotions that lithium causes. For a brief moment he breaks away from the controlling aspects of the drug. This is shown when he asks if he is the one to "blame". His self conscience re emerges and the effects of the drug lessens. "My will is good" This is his way of saying don't take his actions personally because he has a legitamate disorder (bi polar). Altogether, this song is very dynamic. I think it should be published in some psychology books. |
