St. Vincent – Surgeon Lyrics | 12 years ago |
While I definitely hear the references to sex, there's also the lines to consider that suggest the narrator doesn't have the best relationship with this other person. Even her mother knows their relationship is volatile. One of them is moving/moved out of where they once lived together, and she tells the mailman not to worry about delivering their mail to separate locations. (Maybe she wants to deliver personally because they still take opportunities for sex in spite of all this?) "Just get along" might mean that the affair has become lifeless and drawn out, which would explain why she compares the act of sex to a medical procedure. Anyways, fantastic song. |
Micachu – Vulture Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Isn't she singing "vertebrae" instead of "your bird of prey?" |
Arcade Fire – (Antichrist Television Blues) Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Matthew 15:8: "These people worship me with their lips, but their hearts are far away from me." I heard that verse this morning and immediately drew the connection to this song. It made the song that much greater for me. Brilliant. |
St. Vincent – Marrow Lyrics | 14 years ago |
To me, the lyrics sound like they're being sung by a person who feels like a puppet ("Honey, can you reach the spots/that need oiling and fixing?", "I pretend these aren't ten strings/tied to all ten of my fingers") in that she is being controlled by another person. In the other lyrics, she expresses her desperate desire to escape, and also to be less vulnerable ("...a spine made up of iron"). Also, this song is excellent! As is the rest of the album. |
St. Vincent – Actor Out of Work Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I think it's "cast, I'm broken arm." I could be wrong. Also, is it "patient, I am lung"? I'm not sure. The lyrics seem to be clearer when she sings them here: http://vimeo.com/5203838 |

I believe the blank in the 2nd verse is "cast, I'm looking on." Also, great song. It's highly addictive. |
The Thermals – Returning to the Fold Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Agreeing with congruent on this one. This has nothing to do with the narrative in Pillar of Salt. They just have the same chords. This is about Harris' own struggle with his faith and religion. He wants to believe in God, but he has problems with organized religion. I think I read in an interview that he said he was "recovering" from his Catholic upbringing. I think that's kind of reflected in this song. He eventually wants to return to the faith that he used to have in God (I won't die escaping/I'll die returning to the fold). The rest of the song is about how he hopes that God will take him back even if he's lost his soul, pleading God to wait for him. |
The Thermals – A Pillar of Salt Lyrics | 15 years ago |
"Don't wanna wipe a pillar of salt" = "Don't want my wife a pillar of salt" Of course, this song is about the story of Lot. I think it's also a criticism of the hypocrisy of humans persecuting sinners (We were born to sin/We don't think we're special, sir/We know everybody is). |
The Lonely Island – Dreamgirl Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I'm pretty sure these are the actual lyrics: Some dude once said that love is a many funny things I know there's a perfect girl out there for me, cuz I see her in my dreams Dream girl, you're a fantasy, you're the only one Out there for me My love Dream girl you amaze me all dressed in paisley Love how not one but both eyes are lazy When I first saw you you were drivin' the bus Thick skin, strong nose like a rhinoceros Dream girl so beautiful, lips all crumby Skin like asphalt, nose so runny Thick thighs, no waist, not a care in the world You not crazy girl, you just my baby girl If you're a vision in sweats with the neon patch Half eaten squirrel hangin' outta your mouth Rainbow poncho, the female tonto Hear a loud noise drop a bucket like a bronco Dream girl, you're a fantasy, you're the only one Out there for me My love You got your cellphone ring set to Sex and the City You like a hot bowl of gritz only way more gritty Straight drippin' in turquoise, my Santa Fe queen One short leg you got the Santa Fe Lean It's music to my ears when you scream in your sleep And when you lift your skirt in public yo I can't help but peek You like Cleopatra with the eyes of a pig Love to watch you in the backyard when you go out to dig Girl how'd you get those mouse traps glued to your neck Little rascal, how'd you get screwed to the deck? Fleet Foxes – Blue Ridge Mountains Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Well, when it's played live, it's always "older brother," but on the recorded album version, it is "oh brother." |
Mates of State – My Only Offer Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Slightly corrected real lyrics: Bought a home we bartered right. Two kids, Two car delight. Posed pictures on the walls. Small talk in the bedroom halls. Can't make it home tonight. Go to sleep but leave the light. I pretend to make a call. Loose talk into bedroom stalls. Oh, oh, oh it's my only offer. Stifled copies of myself. Oh, oh, oh, as someone else. My friends they all agree. Give in to our defeat. In secret we believe, We're nothing, nothing, nothing that we need. Oh, oh, oh, it's my only offer. Stifled copies of myself. Oh, oh, oh, as someone else. I always wanted to be the face in front of me. Debating a life sucked out the energy. Built up a wall made out of finer things. Piled it high so we could barely see it. Oh oh oh it's my only offer. Oh, oh, oh, my only offer. Oh, oh, oh, my only offer. Stifled copies of myself. Oh, oh, oh, it's all I have to offer. |
The Hives – Abra Cadaver Lyrics | 15 years ago |
The lyrics kind of remind me of some kind of government experiment. I agree with superdam, though. Perhaps it's about an experiment and it's a metaphor? Anyway, love, love, LOVE this song. My favorite by The Hives. |
Be Your Own Pet – Fuuuuun Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Yeah, the lyrics are wrong. I would guess that the "Dude Zone" is either a specific venue (in Nashville, perhaps?) or just what jemina calls any random venue or hangout or whatever. In the album jacket, it says "Pictures taken... from that one night at the dude zone," so its somewhere where they played one time. |
