I have just listened to the song on repeat while I read all the comments above and cannot help seeing 'Spank Thru' and 'dross' as definitely the most convincing descriptions of the song. Of course there is an element of take what you get, but there is a distinct poetic design in this song. It is extremely intelligent in its creative structure and the words - when read through the eyes of someone caught in a war-zone snatching their feet away from the jaws of Hades, suddenly confronted by the brutality and ungodliness of life - it carves a greater, human imagery than most modern music. It is at a time like that when you ask truly 'Where is God? If I am gone tomorrow where will I go?' |

'Alma Mater' is latin for 'nurturing mother', the pun here i think is that, in this case, the mother is overly nuturing and he wants freedom. he sings "To someone, somewhere, oh yeah... Alma matters" - to someone an overly nurturing mother is something they have never had and perhaps need or want, but morrissey just wants to be left to ruuin his life his own way. this is my interpretation, any disputes? |
