Okkervil River – Down Down the Deep River Lyrics 3 years ago
I think you guys are way off, especially clarkma5.

This song is about losing a best friend in early adolescence. The "deep deep river" is his adulthood, carrying him away from the magic of childhood.

The first verse is at his friends funeral in early December, or fall. All of the dead kid's friends are his pallbearers, and friends and family tell stories of his short life. ("All your days in a line"). But even as they celebrate the kid's life, the narrator feels no relief ("it's not even close to alright").

The kid's uncle is some sort of criminal, and one gets the feeling that the narrator is worried for his friend.

The next part is either a car crash or the kid hung himself and the narrator found him. One wonders if maybe they had a clubhouse of sorts in the woods, Bridge To Terebithia style. Regardless, the narrator witnesses his friend leaving, and it breaks him. His father finds him and comforts him, explaining the afterlife in hopeful terms. But it doesn't make it any better.

As the song ends, the narrator realizes he will not be going "down the deep river" with his best friend. Smh. The song just kills me every time.

The Church – Reptile Lyrics 6 years ago
Time for some corrections!

"too feeble to let go"? wtf? at what point does the narrator describe the other person as "feeble"? It's ridiculous.

The actual line is "Too dangerous to keep/Too evil to let go".

Can anyone think of a reptile that can "rattle" their "scales"? NO. THAT'S STUPID.

The actual line is "I see you slither away with your skin and your scales/your flickering tongue and your rattling tail/like a real reptile"

Other than that, thanks for posting.

Taylor Swift – We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together Lyrics 13 years ago
Stunning. You somehow captured the essence of the song, and thereby captured the essence of nothing. Truly, you understood the depths of Ms. Swift's pain, and laid it bare for all of us. Helluva song. I can only compare it to Abba's "Money Money Money" for it's absolute frankness. Girl meets boy, girl buys boy, girl tires of boy, throws him away, writes shitty song about it, fucks some guy at a gay bar, hit song. Amazing.

That was a gigantic post of "song", that was completely bereft of meaning. Much like the song itself. Good show. (srsly, don't ever post here like that again...ever, ever, ever. Get a blog if you want to post your pop-istory.)

While I am replying to this comment, I have to ask: "why does everyone assume this is a gay relationship?". I ask this because I kind of grew up with this song, and always associated it with what I was going through in the moment (which was always of a hetero-type situation).

So...what is it about this song that sets off your gay-dar? (not delial, but anyone, really)

My take: It's unrequited love. Marrying all of your close friends is much easier, because you are always honest with them, always "you". However, I would never dream of asking my close friends to watch over me while I sleep. That takes someone special. Someone who most likely does not exist.

Woooo-wooo-wooo-woooo!

Dirty Projectors – Gun Has No Trigger Lyrics 13 years ago
It's about helplessness, and feeling there is no way out.

It's about hindsight, and how it's so maddeningly always 20/20.

The frustration of finding that the most dire, destructive, explosive way of finding your way out of a situation, will most likely fail.

It's about life. It's a gun, but you can't control it.

what's funny about Song Meanings:

the site seems abandoned. all the posts are from years and years ago. also:

very few posts actually talk about the meaning of the song.

this song, in my mind, is about how the band was pursued....it occurs to me that some people want to be musicians, and some people just ARE musicians...and when their art generates dollars, there is no shortage of people to exploit them...

so Jay finds himself "Persuaded, paraded,"...in a dry town...many northerners and westerners don't know, but there are many southern towns and counties where you cannot buy liquor...but, like fireworks, as soon as you drive out, you'll find stores catering to drunkards almost over-enthusiastically..

"In a three-hour-away town"

"Liquor and guns, the sign says quite plain "

one searches for salvation when they are lost and confused...."a long from happiness"....and there is peace available in "a three-hour-away-town"...salvation takes so much work, but the bottle is soooo easy, so i take the "whisky bottle over jesus"...and hope that it is "not forever, just for now".

Uncle Tupelo is an amazing companion on my way down

goddamit, boy, don't post when yer drunk!

UT's songs all ring the same for me...early alcoholism, still in love with the spirits, but well aware of what is happening to you...Tweedy made it out....not so sure about Farrar...

sorry. we are here for the meaning of this song.

this is life in the south, especially in a southern town:

"In between the dirt and disgust there must be
Some air to breathe and something to believe"

you drink, hoping to get out, even when, in most cases, it is an "out" that only exists in your mind....

what a lot of people don't realize, is that many southern towns are "dry"....meaning you cannot get liquor....even now, 6 years after OP's post, you can't get hard liquor in Bryan TX....where i went to school...

a long way from happiness...
