Poe – Spanish Doll Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I agree that it is one of the most beautiful, most haunting songs that I have ever heard, in terms of both melody and lyrics. |
Poe – Control Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Don't you mess with a little girl's dreams Coz she's liable to grow up mean (While the meaning of these two lines are pretty obvious, I really do think it refers to her childhood – her father messed with her dreams by being too controlling and dominating, and now she's grown up mean. I know I may be totally off-base here, but this line especially causes me to think that this song is partly all the negative feelings that she had against her dad. It's from the album "Haunted", and the entire album is about her father, and how she came upon some tapes of some of his lectures, and it shook her to her core to hear her father's voice again after he's been dead for so long. Anyone ever listen to the entire album in sequence? It tells the whole story of her relationship with him, the ups, downs, rebellions etc, until it ends in peace and love with "If you were here" One of the reasons this song is so powerful for me, and prolly why I'm so sure it's at least partly about her dad, is because this song NAILS my feelings towards my step dad, and how I'd like to feel if I should ever run into him again.) Surprise you to find that I'm laughing? You thought that you'd find me in tears You thought I'd be crawling the walls Like a tiny mosquito and trembling in fear (This would probably be what she'd expect her father (or abuser, if this song is not about the father figure at all) to think she'd feel upon encountering him again. He'd expect her to still be the fearful, powerless (like a mosquito) victim he made her to be). Well you may be king for the moment, But I am a queen, understand? And I got your pawns and your bishops and castles All inside the palm of my hand (In my life, as a teenager living with an absolute horrible step father, this verse nailed my feelings completely and gave me strength and hope that things would change eventually. So, the abuser is obviously at this point still in a position of power, but she, the victim, knows that it's only a matter of time before she's no longer dependant on him, and then she'll be the one calling the shots) While you were looking the other way While you had your eyes closed While you were likcing your lips Cause I was miserable While you were selling your soul While you were tearing a hole in me I was taking control (She's saying that even while he was busy torturing her (in whatever way) and enjoying it and gloating over the pain it causes her, she was busy finding herself and her strenght, and he was too caught up in his pleasure at her pain to notice or do anything about it.) Now I have taken control Now I have taken control Control Well this is beginning to feel good Watching your squirm in your shoes A small bead of sweat on your brow And a growl in your belly you're scared to let loose (Now she's seeing him again, and he no longer has power over her. She is now strong and angry and she "grew up mean", and she can take him on. This scares him, and she's enjoying his unease.) You thought you could keep me from loving Yeah you thought you could feed on my soul But while you were busy destroying my life What was half in me has become whole (She's stating what her destroyer's goals were, but once again that while he was too busy enjoying her pain, she was "becoming whole" and he was too caught up in her pain to notice) While you were looking the other way While you had your eyes closed While you were likcing your lips Cause I was miserable While you were selling your soul While you were tearing a hole in me I was taking control Now I have taken control Now I have taken control Control So this is how it feels To breathe in the summer air Feel the sand between my toes And the love inside my ear All those things you taught me to fear: I got them in my garden now And you're not welcome here (After breaking free, "taking control", she was able to do all of these things he taught her "to fear" through his actions, and she saw that the way he taught it to her was beautiful and precious, and she's cultivating them, and he can't come in and destroy them again) This cannot be all that there is to life Because in our confrontation with an enormous and cold universe There's something comical to the idea That we can really force our… our will on humanity Power corrupts (This is, for me, a reference to the fact that people try to get power over others, and they get corrupted by that power and start to abuse it. It's also ironic that it's her father saying it, while I suspect that the song is at least in part about him.) |

Broken-Minded: Yeah, I got that one too!! It's at the end of the song, and her father's voice (she explains how she got tapes of his recordings of lectures and letters to her and her brother in the CD leaflet) says: What is it, Annie? (Poe's real name) Then the girl says You think I'll cry? I won't cry. My heart will break before I cry. I will go mad. And then, like you said, the laughing or sobbing. It's UBER creepy, and seriously cool. It's not on the radio version, but it's on the CD, together with all kinds of other voice snippets and comments in the CD leaflet that explains A LOT about the entire CD. |
The Rasmus – First Day Of My Life Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"Together regardless, we'll walk through the darkness". One of the lines that has the most potent effect on me. It's just wonderful. I think that this song is about this guy. He's feeling overwhelmed, and he wants to be alone, whishes he was far away, wishes he was "Weeks on the road, a long way from home, just shut off the phone". Then his girlfriend, noticing his melancholy, says that her love can "heal" him, she can lift him from this feeling. "I'll kill you if I do something wrong"... NO CLUE. Seriously. Maybe the girlfriend is saying that she feels like she'll be the cause of his suicide if she says or does something to hurt him? Being with her was so refreshing for him, that it made him feel like a new person ("still feels like the first day of my life"). I always get the feeling that this girl split, or killed herself or something, because of what he says in verse 2: "And maybe I'm crazy, but I just can't slow down (he's burying himself in his work), and maybe I'm crazy, *but at least I'm still around*". I think he's saying that, unlike her, he is still "around", and keeping their promise to "never give up this life". "This life" they promised to never give up could also refer to life in the music industry? Anycase, I always write "Together regardless, we'll walk through the darkness" on all cards and stuff I give my hubby. It just touches me so much... he's saying that no matter what happens, regardless of what happens, regardless of how dark it may become, they'll stay together and "walk" through it, they'll survive it intact, as a couple. |
Def Leppard – When Love And Hate Collide Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"You could have a change of heart If you would only change your mind Instead of slamming down the phone, girl For the hundredth time " This verse is pretty obvious: They had a fight, maybe even split up, and she's still so angry that she refuses to talk to him, only hangs up on him. He says that if she'd just change her mind about talking to him, she could have a change of heart about getting back together. "I got your number on my wall But I ain't gonna make that call " He's getting tired of phoning only to have her "slam down" the phone, and his pride is preventing him from keeping on trying. "When divided we stand, baby United we fall " One of the most profound lines Def Leppard ever wrote. When you are in a relationship and you are not pulling the weight together (in other words, you are "standing divided"), then the relationship can't work out, and the two of you won't succeed as a couple ("united we fall"). "Got the time, got a chance, gonna make it Got my hands on your heart, gonna take it All I know, I can't fight this flame " He's saying that he knows she loves him, he has this opportunity to make this relationship work out with her, and he's going to do his best to make it work, because his feelings are so strong, he can't forget about her. "You could have a change of heart If you would only change your mind Cause I'm crazy 'bout you baby Time after time " If she'd just change her mind and start talking/listening to him, he could convince her to give the relationship another chance, because no matter how much they fight, or how many times they break up, or how bad it gets, he's still crazy about her. Without you One night alone Is like a year without you baby Do you have a heart of stone? "Without you Can't stop the hurt inside When love and hate collide " The first 3 lines are obvious. Then he says that when they're apart or split up, all those feelings of anger and frustration and love and joy and longing hurt too much, but when he's with her, he can bear it. That's why "without you (I) can't stop the hurt inside". "I don't wanna fight no more I don't know what we're fighting for When we treat each other, baby Like an act of war" He's tired of fighting with her, and he can't even see the point of arguing when all they do is hurt each other without achieving anything. "I could tell a million lies And it would come as no surprise When the truth is like a stranger Hits you right between the eyes " This one is always a bit tricky for me, and I'd like some input. I think he's saying that no matter how many times he lies, he's not surprised, but the truth (that he does love her, and wants to make it work) comes as a huge surprise. "There's a time and a place and a reason And I know I got a love to believe in All I know Got to win this time " Same as the previous bridge. They have something special, and they have this opportunity to really find true love in each other, and he really wants it to work. This is how I interpret the song's lyrics, anyone care to comment? |
