Bruce Hornsby – Mandolin Rain Lyrics 17 years ago
This song makes me think of a father who's saying goodbye to a daughter. The daughter's either deceased or moving away or getting married.
"I can't change my mind
I knew all the time she'd go
But that's a choice I made long ago"

This is the father's realization that he's always known this day was coming, but he still feels sad about it.

Stone Sour – 30/30-150 Lyrics 17 years ago
The first time I heard this song, I thought it might have been about how survivors of Katrina might have felt..

"they told us that we wouldn't survive
They left us alone in the maelstrom
As you can see we're all clearly alive
We know where you are and were coming"

and

"I can bury the hatchet and let some shit go
But I got too many grudges to hold!

I Saw a lot of people die in the end
I never want to walk that road again
Now I will never give up
I don't want to have it all, I JUST WANT TO HAVE ENOUGH"

Nickelback – Because Of You Lyrics 17 years ago
"Now that you did this You ask for forgiveness Doctor could you be my priest? You say you're mistaken But look what you've taken Your life flashed You laugh through your teeth" Again, I'm pretty sure this can still relate to someone abusing cocaine or another addictive drug. Although self harming might fit. Drug addicts are often rushed by friends or family to emergency rooms to be adminstered Narcan to negate the effects of the drug. The doctor becomes the priest that they have to admit the drug use to, and they manage to survive. But despite their near death ordeal, the addict refuses to acknowledge that they have a problem.
"You know I can be there It's time that you call I swore not to come But I'm here after all I know by the look that I see In your eyes I won't stand around and I won't watch you die." This is clearly written from the point of view of someone who's taking care of a friend or loved one who's abusing drugs or self harming. I have personal experience with this one. My neighbor has two young children and is addicted to pain medication. She'll call me up jonesing for her meds, and I would have to stop everything and either watch her kids or take her to the emergency room and wait for hours for her to get treatment. Believe me I understand that after a while you get very fed up. I'm still convinced this is about someone taking care of a friend or family member with a drug problem (although self harming might be plausible too).

Nickelback – Because Of You Lyrics 17 years ago
If if hasn't been pointed out already, I know there was some confusion about the drug use and the bleeding while staring at the ceiling. Cocaine is a drug that's often put on a mirror. When the user takes it, it often makes their nose bleed from the irritation. When your nose bleeds, some people tilt their head back (which you should NOT do) and stare at the ceiling. As the person stares at the ceiling, the drug takes effect and the world fades away.

Creed – Say I Lyrics 17 years ago
This song could either have biblical tones of Armageddon, or consequences of mankind's devastating effects on the Earth. In one sense, the lyrics describe similar images to the book of Revelations where Jesus has come to take the Saved up to heaven and the rest are left in some sort of Purgatory. In another sense, it could also describe a post-nuclear winter (the dust has finally settled on a field of human clay, just enough light has shown through to tell night from the day.... we'll melt in the rain) Most of mankind has been incinerated and turned into ash (a material used in clay), the fallout caused a nuclear winter that blocked out the sun, and the radioactive toxic clouds cause acid rain to burn the survivors.

And for both meanings, Armageddon, and Nuclear Apocalypse, Who's to Blame? Say I. I am to blame. We all are to blame.

Alice in Chains – Nutshell Lyrics 17 years ago
"We chase misprinted lies, We face the path of time" To me this is a way of saying that we spend too much time and energy seeking things that others tell us are good for us, and that we don't have enough time in our lives to live these fantasy lives. "And yet I fight This battle all alone No one to cry to No place to call home" That the more we strive to achieve these hollow and selfish victories the more alone we become. "My gift of self is raped My privacy is raked"Now, because we've allowed ourselves to be sucked into what's "cool" or the "norm", we've allowed that which is truly ourselves to be raped and taken from us. And if we achieve the fame we often seek, that we sacrifice our privacy to get it. "And yet I find Repeating in my head If I can't be my own I'd feel better dead" Eventually we realize that we can't live like this. That we have to be individual and live our own dreams, and that we'd rather not exist than exist in a world where our very being is determined by what others tell us we're allowed to be.

Eagles – Best of My Love Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree with mpc996, this is about a relationship that has matured. It's gone through all the phases from first infatuation to deeply connected, but now they've gone from comfortable with each other to taking each other for granted. This is a song written about a relationship that has already splintered, and the author feels it's still salvageable. He's putting himself and his feelings toward his partner and hoping to get back the love they once had.

John Mayer – Gravity Lyrics 17 years ago
Gravity seems to express people's tendencies to self-destruct. Just like we can't fight gravity, we can't seem to fight this tendency to destroy the things we cherish in our lives no matter what we do. "I'll never know what makes this man with all the love that his heart can stand dream of ways to throw it all away." It can also describe how, like the force of gravity, the circumstances of life that are out of our control are the ones we get so fed up fighting with, and ultimately leads us to losing hope. "Keep me where the light is" is a plea for any reprieve from his misery.
