I always thought that "Hoist that rag" referred to like old Baptist preachers who would hoist up a rag while singing/preaching Who knows...either way the song is incredible |

"I believe I'll dust my broom" Maybe I'm just stupid, but I think it's funny that that very same line is used in "Wilbury Twist" by the Traveling Wilburys, which Dylan was in I wonder if that's a knock back to that band? |

| Bob Dylan – Ain't Talkin' Lyrics | 19 years ago |

I see it as a man who has lost his faith in a faithless world, he may even be a preacher, or a pilgrim Everywhere he looks, there is evil and ruthlessness, and all the while he even wants to give into the temptation of evil, he is fighting with himself, he wants to just find his enemies and "slaughter them where they lie." He wants to believe that prayer will heal him, and even though he loves his neighbor and tries to "do good unto others", "Things ain't going well..." But he can't give in, his own suffering is "unending", the fire that was once in his heart for his god is now gone, but the light of hope is still there. Through out the song, his heart is burnin' and yearnin' for something better, and until he finds it, even if he has to go to the "last outback at the world's end", he will never stop walkin' or looking for that fire, that unconditional love that he is losing every day. It's a haunting, beautiful, lonesome, heart wrentching, ballad of indescribable pain, anger, love, and faith Not only one of my favorites on the new album, but of all Dylan's songs |

Honestly maybe the song is talking about BOTH the drug addiction and the idea of the government controlling soliders to be lead to their death. I mean the song CAN go either way, besides, after the guitar solo, notice the words shift from an addiction to something else "Hell is worth all that, natural habitat just a rhyme without a reason" that could be interpreted as how soliders die and fight all for nothing, and hell or war is worth almost nothing see what I mean? Great song, one of the best in the world! |

Definately, this song is SOOOOOOOO damn good, besides the lyrics being good, the guitar and drums in the backround perfectly match the feelings, it's so good! And I don't believe Metallica sold out, they just cut their hair and wrote different styled songs, which are still good! THEY WILL ALWAYS ROCK! |

These lyrics are good! it IS about James' mother who died from cancer because she was a christian scientist and she believed god would heal her and died, but the lyric about "Trust you gave; a child to save; left you cold and him in grave" COULD mean James, that because of his mother's trust in god to heal her and she left him alone when she died and a part of the child that believed in god died in him too... "I hear faith in your cries" explains whilst she cried in pain, she had faith that didn't save her...anyway that's what I think |

Exactly, this song's meaning is, "If you do the crime, you do the time, unless you have a shitload of money" Metallica has the best ways of pointing out America's faults, THROUGH BITCHIN GUITAR SOLO'S AND SCREAMING LYRICS! ROCK ON METALLICA! *HEAD BANGS* |

| I agree SilentAenima, I also think the song is about him not trusting "God" and finding a new path, you can kinda tell from, the lyric "You made me turn away" | |
