This song's chorus sounds so optimistic, but the verses and the lyrics are so sad ("Throwing stones at birds who struggle to take flight"). I understand that they may just be a metaphor for an extremely pessimistic person who likes to put other people down because their own life sucks. The person who is the "dark cloud" likes to rain (no pun intended) on everyone else's parade. |

I can't believe no one has commented on this fabulous song. It's so catchy and the chorus is haunting in a strange sort of way. It's definitely my favorite track from, "We Are Born."
As far as the meaning goes, I think it's quite self-explainatory. |

I feel the same way about "The Sequel" ruining the ending of the album. I just bought a copy of the album on vinyl and the tracklist actually has "The Sequel" right in between "Black Rainbow" and "Laughing With a Mouth of Blood" which actually works out so much better than "The Sequel" being at the end. It sounds great and fits in perfectly at the middle of the album. So if you happen to have a record player, I suggest you buy the vinyl. It's a much more satisfying experience having "Just the Same But Brand New" being the album's closer. |

I think that the "tornado" is Neko.
What a beautiful song! There is so much build up to the chorus at the end.
It finally happens and then the song ends.
It leaves me wanting so much more.
I noticed Neko Case has such an amazing way of keeping the listeners attention.

the ending scares me every time i hear this song.
and i agree with everyone else. it isn't a good ending.
i also agree with whaleharpoone about how the ending could have made a really good transition into the last song because i noticed while listening to the album ALL of the other songs had a veryyy good transition going into the other songs. it was like the songs hadn't ended at all. |

In my opinion, I think that this song is about giving up drugs. In the first part of this song (before the chorus) I believe the person she's referring to is a drug dealer. I'm not really sure though. Just taking a guess.

Yeah, I also think this song is about drugs. I'm thinking magic mushrooms?
"I must have done a dozen each, It was the height I grew" - She took a dozen mushrooms and she was high.
"We'll build a fire in your eyes." - I think that means when you take mushrooms (or any psychedelic), your eyes usually get bloodshot.
"When the colors getting brighter." - Colors are usually intensified when you take most psychedelics.
But, I don't know... it's just a guess :) |
