Pearl Jam – Dance of the Clairvoyants Lyrics 4 years ago
Just me or has this become a very apropos and perfectly timed anthem for the COVID-19 sickpocalypse?

Nearly every lyric sounds apocalyptic in light of recent events. Even the general concept of predicting the future. I'm guessing they wrote this more targeted at environmental concerns, and didn't know we'd soon all thinking about the rapidly changing immediate future.

Uhm:

Numbers keep falling off the calendar's floor (Time is very strange these days)
We're stuck in our boxes (little boxes on the hillside?)

This feels like life right now:

So save your predictions (trying)
And burn your assumptions (always)
Love is friction (totally)
Ripe for comfort (family)
Endless equations (So many graphs)
And tugging persuasions (Social pressure)
Doors open up
To interpretation (Most people)

Expecting perfection (Testing capacity)
Leaves a lot to ignore
When the past is the present
And the future's no more
When every tomorrow
Is the same as before. (1918 - 2020)

The looser things get (outbreak)
The tighter you become
The looser things get
Tighter

Love this transition:

Not one man can be greater than the sun (sum?)
That's not a negative thought
I'm positive, positive, positive

I always hear "sum", which is a more hopeful thought that we're not subject to the whims of one terrible leader, and that makes more sense to me, but "sun" is even more "Corona" appropriate.

This too, so apparent in the psychology of people's reactions to this crisis:

Stand back when the spirit comes
Stand back when the spirit comes
Stand back when the spirit comes
Stand back
I know the girls wanna dance
Away their circumstance
I know the boys wanna grow
Their dicks and fix and file things

There's only a few seemingly perfunctory, off-them and/or throw-away lyrics as BoseBose2001 cited:
"Drown in the river"
I also agree "I'm in love with..." is one of the throw away lines too.

Love the track though. Muscular, apocalyptic, and spot-on for the times. Not even EV or the band new that ahead of time. They were Clairvoyant

Like the Mach I video the best too. Spectacular

I think this song is a commentary on troubled young males in America, therefore it is so brilliant, relevant, and scary. I love it. Slays me.

Gregory Alan Isakov – Unwritable Girl Lyrics 12 years ago
This is the second song of his I've glommed onto in the past week. Can't get enough of it. I'm going to add it to the mix "tape" of lullabies I play when putting my daughter to bed.

I don't know the guy but he totally wrote this song for me and her, I swear.

Blind Pilot – Just One Lyrics 12 years ago
Wow, good stuff. Just saw BP live at this their album release show.

This is the first song that caught me from the new album. I got it at the cd release show and I got the lyrics from the insert. Excited to be able to type one in here and be sure it's accurate.

Pretty and simple in structure, but the words and delivery are really great. They're overtly sad and yet subtle. Because of that, effectively heart-breaking.

I think it could be interpreted a couple different ways, but it's most surely a love song. I almost think it owes a little of the sentiment to the classic "One" by U2, without being that literally a break-up song. It's about someone he finds beautiful for sure, but it's obvious they're not meant to be together.

The real question though, is what "I can't believe we get just one" refers to. He seems to lament the way things are, the way things worked out. My guess is, one fate, one chance, one choice, one life, and/or one love.

The Airborne Toxic Event – All I Ever Wanted Lyrics 13 years ago
I can only say these things to you when youre sleeping
I hear the hum from the wires the sounds of the morning creep in
I lie awake and pretend you can hear me

You tell me that youre scared that you're turning into your mother
I feel myself turn into my father
we could lie to each other like they do and say were so happy
its easy when youre young and you still want it so badly

I feel my heart burning
and I think that I might scream

I can tell you that youre all I ever wanted, dear
I can utter every word you'd ever hope to hear
I shudder when I think that I might not be here forever, forever, forever

At night you whisper like a ghost and you look so shaken
You're so quiet and small and you tell me you want to be taken
I just never think of you as the kind of girl who would say that
You suddenly seem like some faceless thing in my grasp
Your eyes so wide your face a glow
It's the face of someone I don't know

I can tell you that youre all I've ever wanted, dear
I can utter every word you'd ever hope to hear
I shudder when I think that I might not be here forever, forever, forever

all I could think is that it must be a kind of rebellion
To own your fears like soldiers and to slay them.

I can tell you that youre all I ever wanted, dear
Through the din of your breathing while youre sleeping here
you wake and ask me if I'm gonna be here forever, forever, forever

Your face all twisted and your eyes a lie
I want to tell you I can change it when you cry at night
But Id be lying
Love is defying
Were slowly dying

A song about being in love with being sad. Intense.

The National – Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks Lyrics 14 years ago
The melody of this song, especially the beginning, is so cinematic. How about this interpretation...

The first verse expresses the temptation to escape a relationship, probably a marriage, or a family to "live alone", and "eat your cake" insinuating that it would free-up doing something more, some extra capacity that is now limited by a burden of responsibilities and strain.

The second verse realizes beautifully why it won't happen. Waters rise, but swans swim together, and mate for life. Someone who loves you, forgives you for all the crying. The "geeks" may want your heart, but in the end they can't have it, not the best of us.

The best of what and who you have to pour into love, voluntarily "string ourselves up for love". Yet living in the "same small world" means it always be "at your heals". The "geeks" will always want more.

Often times at work I say "My hair is on fire" so that's what I think of with this one, especially with "career dawning" in the chorus.

Broken Bells – Trap Doors Lyrics 14 years ago
Wow, I was skeptical of BB at first, probably because I was not overly impressed when I saw The Shin's live shows. This studio collaboration is so dark and catchy.

My two favorite songs of late are this one and "Your head on fire" which nobody has commented on yet either. To me this "Trap Doors" is about making a move, making a break, and moving on. Maybe from a relataionship, a friendship, and job, way of life, a social circle. Don't burn bridges. Know when it's time. Watch your back while you leave. Everyone has advice.

Best verse:
Learned that in time
You want it to end
Your life at this temperature
Life under water
You gotta let these fools all trample themselves
They trample themselves, just dying to enter
You're preaching to the choir
So turn around, turn around

I love the lyric "Trap doors to endless wisdom"
