| The Silver Jews – Animal Shapes Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
I believe this song is about American revolution in various forms with a focus on the revolutionary war itself. The Natchez trace was a trade route in early america and was probably used surreptitiously during the revolution. I think "animal shapes" might be referencing the shapes of the states (colonies) succeeding from great britain. "God must be carving them", as Thomas Pain was denying the divine origins of the king (after the bloodline was severed by the "French Bastard" william of orange), so popular treasonous speech would be that it was god's divine will to have our own country. After all we have "nothing good to give, to those who would take away the things that we need to live" (freedom, taxes, quarrtering soldiers, involvment in foreign wars, what got us into breaking from GB). "Later on I said some things I didn't mean, I know everybody's on a first name basis with the King": 'Old fat king George', Great Britain was cracking down on treason as they were becoming aware of how pissy we were getting and talking lots of trash about King George. That's why "he didn't mean it", lol, didn't want to get strung up. So I think he is probably starting out in present day Nashville on CHarlotte avenue where cops are busting someone for who knows what, (perhaps a protest) and then he slips into the poetic war symbolism. Let me know what you think of the theory :) |

| Songs: Ohia – Captain Badass Lyrics | 14 years ago |

Met him at a show in Minneapolis, and must say, for all the sadness in his music he is a really upbeat and energetic guy. I chatted with him for a bit after the show and he was really nice and cool. He even signed my cast! Its always frightening meeting people you've idolized for so long, they could turn out to be real dicks. Luckily I can confirm that Jason truly is the captain of all things badass. |

| Belle & Sebastian – Funny Little Frog Lyrics | 14 years ago |

I'm going to lay it out very clearly. the funny little frog in his throat: When you are nervous about speaking (to a girl in this instance), you often need to clear your throat you know, or like your words get all messed up in your nervousness, you have a frog in your throat and you sound ridiculous, he is afraid to talk to 'her' who is 'she'? for this song it doesn't matter. Anyway, this is a simple and fun song about the pros and cons of actual relationships. In other words, an imaginary and idealistic mental reproduction of an actual person he admires provides him with none of the annoyances and frustration of actual relationships. So the imaginary girls are all different imo, a fashion model, his imagining a relationship with a girl he knows but is too afraid to ask out, a picture on his wall, etc. He pays to visit her on rainy sundays (at the theater perhaps?). And its ended on the note that he may tell her all about it someday, lol. If he ever gets the courage to ask her out formally instead of simply fantasizing about her. Oh, and the highlights wrapped in pearls line, in my opinion, is most likely a reference to masturbation. AND, if you think Stuart is above these sort of references, I would suggest you take a closer listen at some of the earlier songs. He can actually be rather perverted. Also, references to lesbian activity is a very common motif in b&s songs. haha. |

| Belle & Sebastian – Judy and the Dream of Horses Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
@katzenfreundin "Torch" is Brit slang for a flashlight. See Definition 5: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/torch "Ants in your pants" is a relatively common idiom for agitation or excitement about something. Stewart is saying that on their date they go do whatever she wants, and they can kiss, but he will not sleep with her; thus the "ants in her pants". Sexual frustration. It is clear that A) Judy is promiscuous and B) that has gone wrong in her life. She is trying to FIND and KEEP the dream of horses in her reality. She only feels good about herself when she is sleeping. She is able to escape SOMETHING through her dreams. She wrote a very sad song early in the lyrics. He wants her to write songs about her dreams of horses instead to ward off depression. What went wrong? Is my sexual molestation/prostitution theory so far fetched? Personally I have changed my opinion on the relevance of the parrot and believe it to be her pimp, who is constantly on her shoulder (think on her back about...), trying to collect his cut. I still think the star is a reference to Christianity, namely the north star that led the wise men to Jesus, in this case, God's guidance, protection, an a path out of where she has landed herself. The parrot/pimp would be the other side of the shoulder, (think devil on one shoulder angel on the other cliche from cartoons). LIke I said three years ago I could be way off. What we know is that Judy is clearly someone Stuart knew in real life, there are many references to her in his songs. There is one in roller coaster ride "Judy with the bow and arrow (cupid) she's a mastermind (books and learning). Too Frumpy (Dictionary: A girl or woman regarded as dull, plain, or unfashionable) for the teenage population of her kind, (best looking boys are taken, girls are staying inside). Judy came looking for boys while you were stuck in various poses.) There's even an instrumental song called "Judy is a dickslap"! So, she's definitely a girl who was wanting to sleep around a lot, this is well established in our analyses. But what happened to her to make her this way? Why is she depressed and needing to escape to, what I presume, is the fantastical innocence depicted in her dreams? How significant is the reference to her walking the streets? Is she a "street walker" IE prostitute? Or is she simply looking for someone to have sex with because she is "too frumpy for the teenage population of her kind"? Could the fact that she is getting involved with perverts outside her age bracket have something to do with all of this? We'll probably never know, but in my opinion any explanation not about some form of tragic promiscuity or at least a central theme of sexuality is flat wrong. And I do not see any reason to believe she is on drugs. |

| Three 6 Mafia – Spill My Blood Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I listened carefully and deciphered a lyric that no one can seem to get right. He crams the words in so fast that it sounds like he says something about a cop and "kill a four legged friend" but if you listen closely you can hear that he is actually saying "Killed the cops cute little four legged friend" 'cute little' being said so fast that it sounds like kyu-la' | |

| The Silver Jews – Black and Brown Blues Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| The black and brown shoes is a reference to Jimmy Carter who legend had it showed up to his wedding with one black shoe and one brown. Jimmy Carter's years of presidency were an embarrassment and he is well known for his inability to make firm decisions. | |

| also, "Judy I don't know you, if you're gonna show me everything" adds further credit to my theory, He is telling her that it is not the way he wants to get to know her, that he cares about her for what she is and not her body, which she has been using to get the attention she needs in her broken life. | |

I've always thought it was about prostitution. About the sweet girl he knew who made him smile in the past> He's trying to understand where things "went wrong", and I believe it's probably rape or some sort of sexual abuse. She did it with a boy when she was young, which is common for women who have been sexually abused. Murdoch wants to rescue her from her pain, "Judy let's go for a walk, we can kiss and do whatever you want." He will let her express her sexuality but he doesn't want to use her for sex because it is what has been happening to her her whole life, so "you will fall asleep with ants in your pants" IE sexual desire. The dream of horses is symbolic of a simpler time in her life where she was innocent, and Stewart wants her to go back there as often as she can so she can feel like the young girl she was before being robbed of her innocence. "All the good looking boys are taken, the good looking girls are staying inside." She doesn't have any peers who want anything to do with her in any sort of real way, and tragically she turns to prostitution. "walking the street from morning to night" and because Stewart is a Christian, he believe god is protecting her still "start upon your shoulder lighting the path as you walk." and the parrot on her shoulder is her excuses and denial of her horrible life, in that she keeps repeating the same things when people try to help her, she shuts them out. I really love this song, and I feel like he sings it with great emotion, and he really does want to rescue this girl from her future. I could be dead wrong of course, but it will always be what the song means to me. Keep dreaming Judy. |

| Pavement – Starlings of the Slipstream Lyrics | 18 years ago |

OK check it out, I have always thought this was fairly obvious. One of the major causes of plane crashes is what is called "snarge", which is a very fitting name as it just sounds disgusting. Snarge is what they call the bloody remains of birds that get caught in jet engines, and it can make them crash. Why there's a specific term for this? Haha, I don't know. Many "leaders" have died in plane crashes, if you can figure out the specific ones being referred to let us know. Starlings in the slipstream. the rest of the song is anyone's guess, random Malkmusian gibberish perhaps? |
