Sting should do more standards . .this was an especially tender ballad for a movie like "Leaving Las Vegas" but strangely appropriate . . . put me out of my misery and put them together on one CD. I have been hooked since I heard "Someone to Watch Over Me" and Angel Eyes is another oldie but goodie! |

She wears a veil, don't you think people would talk if she is mourning her husbands best friend . . makes me think the friend is also either dead or she went off her rocker. Reminds me of the quote "all are punish-ed". |

What . . only 1 response to one of my favorite Dan songs. You know, I just barely got the reference to him smoking . . .as in hell (duhhhh). Nobody writes as delightfully acerbic lyric as Steely Dan. I think they might have known a shady character or two. I always wondered . . . did the screw up that almost erased the "Katy Lied" tracks . . it has a deliciously tinny, not quite HiFi quality to the song. Perfect for such a disreputable character . . I wonder if that is on purpose.

Hmmn . . yes I got the "Green Green Grass of Home" reference.
The line about platting the willow vines puts me in mind of Delilah platting the reeds in an attempt to bind Sampson . .yes/no?
Nick's songs remind me of something I heard recently about the director David Lean . . something about shooting his scenes of violence as beautifully as possible and making the love scenes as dark as possible. (something to that effect) That seems to me what he is trying to acheive. |

I can not believe all the amazing songs the Bad Seeds have put together. It is almost sensory overload . . . I would be curious as to what you thought about his song "Do You Love Me" . . .I don't understand what is in his psyche that makes him write the darkest songs imaginable and yet also the tenderest love songs ever penned. Interesting, writing a song and getting a gun both means of expression when you can't get through to somebody. Both get you the attention your seeking. Sounds a little like he is desperate to get her attention and looking for signs that he means something to her (her Che tee shirt), projecting she is "strange" maybe because she doesn't return his affection, when he is the one with all the "strange" thoughts pounding in his brain like rain. "Flowers in your Window" seems like she is blocking his entrance to her world. This song disturbs me, it's so melancholy but beautiful. |
