Blues Traveler – Look Around Lyrics 17 years ago
One of my favorite songs to belt out when I'm alone in the car. And it can still make my get teary.

I think the first verse is sung to someone, like the singer is accusing someone, and instructing her to "look around" at her life instead of getting complacent. Then she leaves, and through the second verse, the singer slowly accepts the blame, and by the end the chorus is sung for oneself.

As an aside, it's, "And SOMETIMES / In the midst of all my crimes." Not "Something."

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Maps Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm sorry if this has been said, but I don't want to read through 8 pages of comments.

I think the singer is noticing that she's straying from her relationship emotionally, and wants her boyfriend to say something to make her stay. In some of the lines of the verses, she's talking about herself. In others, she's imagining what she wants to hear from him. The lines, "Oh, say, say, say" are a command, to say "Wait."

I just saw the music video for the first time. Mesmerizing. It adds a whole new layer of meaning to this already-great song.

Tom Petty – American Girl Lyrics 17 years ago
This is one of my theme songs; I adore it. I always thought of it as about a typical bored, jaded American girl who goes and has one amazing experience that changes her life. The second verse is her looking back on that time, knowing that the past is forever out of reach.

And now I read that it's supposed to be about suicide. Oh, well. I'll try not to let that ruin it for me.

Restless Heart – Bluest Eyes In Texas Lyrics 18 years ago
A cover of this song sung by Nina Persson plays over the ending credits of the movie "Boys Don't Cry." Afer seeing that movie, this song makes me tear up whenever I hear it.

Gorgeous song, gorgeous movie. And it adds a whole other layer of meaning when sung by a woman.

Barcelona – It's About Time Lyrics 18 years ago
I love this song because it reminds me of myself and my fear of letting someone get too close.

Fundamentally, it's about the fact that actions are much more important than words. Both the boy and girl from the first two verses know that they aren't loved, even though they might have people saying that they love them, because they have never shown their true selves to anyone. The words mean nothing without the actions to back them up.

Also, the lyric "There've been too many times when I've drowned you with these perfect lines," shows that even if you say all the right things, it doesn't matter if your actions aren't backing up your words.

The ultimate courageous and meaningful action for both the characters is not running away from the opportunity to love one another. Before, they might have "flown away" because of their fear of intimacy, but they recognized the loneliness in each other and stayed to give it a shot.

Gabriel Mann – OK Alone Lyrics 18 years ago
The lyrics are pretty blunt, but the tune is fun. It's a great song to sing along to.

The Chicks – Goodbye Earl Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is amazing. It has enough humor that kiling Earl doesn't feel morbid, and enough seriousness that it doesn't feel like they're making light of domestic violence and murder.

Look for the video on YouTube. It's hilarious. And Adrian Pasdar from Heroes (Nathan Petrelli) plays a cop in it. XD

Tremolo – Baby Blue Lyrics 18 years ago
I adore this song. Whenever I tell my friends about it, I have to convince them that yes, there really is a song about sex trafficking, and it is actually poignant and beautiful and it makes me cry every time I hear it.

The chorus is especially haunting, the plea of a prostituted slave that someone might see through her act and realize that he/she's in trouble.

It's all about the fact that we deindividualize an even dehumanize prostitutes, when often they were forced into the business against their will. The narrator points out that while her customers only see her as a whore, they wonder about her name or the fact that she is someone's daughter.

In case you're wondering, the "St. Agnus don't call" line refers to St, Agnus, the saint of young women and bodily purity.

Guster – Amsterdam Lyrics 18 years ago
People have mentioned before that the "from your red balloon you were a super high-tech jet fighter" lyric is from Nena's 99 Red Balloons. I think it's important that that song, in which a girl causes a nuclear war by releasing a bunch of helium balloons, is about something seemingly harmless turning out to have serious repercussions, like drug use.
