Incubus – Adolescents Lyrics 9 years ago
This song is about people who have died young.. Brandon is haunted by adolescent spirits. Out of sight out of mind..and people who have had near death experiences claim that time no longer exists in the afterlife. Out of time.

Tool – Forty Six & 2 Lyrics 10 years ago
The songs about digging through your subconscious via mescaline. The book Teachings of Don Juan is about becoming a peyote shaman and is referenced in the song Third Eye which is on the same album as 46 and 2. Maynard is most likely using mescaline here.

Incubus – Nebula Lyrics 10 years ago
this song is about psilocybin mushrooms. At high doses you disconnect from the world around you and lose touch with reality. But once you begin to come down you can regain focus and are hit with intense moments of creativity. That's what this song is all about.

Modest Mouse – She Ionizes and Atomizes Lyrics 15 years ago
Reading these replies, I realized that there are not any people who are chemists or physicists. I know a bit about ionic and covalent bonds from college biology..

An ionic bond is when two atoms, rather than sharing one or more electrons, one completely donates an electron to another resulting in one strongly positively charged ion, and one negatively charged ion. This creates a strong bond between the two atoms or now, ions. It explains why salt crystals are so hard to break apart.

"She ionizes and atomizes" Makes me think that the couple forms, and she leaves him.
"then turns to sunlight" could either mean that Brock is either realizing she's "the one" as soon as she leaves. Or that she turns to her own sunlight which is another guy, or just a lifestyle away from Isaac. I think it is maybe the latter. The rest is based on how you see the first part I guess.

311 – Reconsider Everything Lyrics 15 years ago
First off lets get those lyrics fixed. Second, Nick's lyrics have a great general lesson to take with you through one's life journey. Seems like SA is dissing marijuana, something that I tend to do at times, other times I feel it is a beneficial if not benevolent choice of mind relaxant/opener. After several years of university schooling/pot consumption, I beleive that it is truly a matter of the quality of marijuana as to whether or not it "takes you down or up". Perhaps the fact that I even consider this means it brings you up. during SA's part it should read

"Everybody wants something they control
Some just want grass some they want gold
Either way does it feel good or feel low
Taking you down not fast but real slow"

This is another song where 311 realizes that every action has a reaction, and that we are controllers of our destinies along with "Lifes not a Race"

311 – Applied Science Lyrics 15 years ago
Alright my interpretation of the song flows directly from the title "Applied Science." First, this song is in a pretty wierd key musically (alot of sharps and flats). It starts with i think a G# major. Then changes to an F# major key with a D added to it when SA says "cuz music will be coming from the words we speak.."

In sum, key changes allow for interesting music and 311 are experts at it. 'Applied Science" makes me think they have a certain musical pattern that they use alot and Applied this to a strange musical key for kicks.

311 – Solar Flare Lyrics 16 years ago
i wish i could put together lyrics as powerful as that first verse.. one of my favorite songs to jam to, emotional chords and tricky pauses taking the song far away from the realm of ballads.

I'm glad that they put this song on the album, it really takes that sense of selfishness out of an album when you put a song like this on the playlist. What an open mind 311 has.

311 – Wake Your Mind Up Lyrics 16 years ago
Zenter that last quote u typed is probably personal to whoever wrote the lyrics. As for "ignorance is bliss to those uneducated," the last part of the saying is crucial to me because Everyone on this Earth is ignorant to an extent.

Philosophers like Socrates were some very intelligent people, yet even Socrates knew he was ignorant of moral truths and true definitions of certain words words (justice, goodness, and beauty) can never be defined b/c they are relative to individuals and cultures... So in a sense adding on "to those uneducated" is crucial to the saying "ignorance is bliss" b/c many philosophers dedicate their lives to fighting their own ignorance which would not be "bliss" in my book.

311 – Life's Not A Race Lyrics 16 years ago
Sa is all about reincarnation. In the 3 choruses it sounds like hes talkin ab someone who left him for reasons he doesnt know and hes imagining how he will feel about it in the future life he will be reincarnated into OR he is talking about a womans refusal to accept his child and he is imagining the endless amount of effects that could happen.. in the end he has already told her his feelings theres nothing he can do......

in the last verse Sa is checking up with you telling you his wild different view wondering if you feel the same "do you see..."

could be a song that you take as you like..

311 – Mindspin Lyrics 16 years ago
oh and i agree with the first guy too that we need to use technology for more practical uses like supplying everyone in the world with clean energy (and food and water.) And when this happens, THEN the people will not be busy with mindless labor, and can focus on more ultimate goals like protecting the earth from damaging outside forces. Mankind will be at our most efficient when unified but unified at our own will NOT unified with fear. Maybe im thinking to big for my breeches. AIM jpa2324 if anybody wants to discuss 311's use of chromaticism(or blending of notes that usually dont go together in a typical musical scale) im tryin to grasp how they came up with songs (especially structures like hydroponic or champagne) musically. ..7th chords are key.

dreamtheater, Im interested in your meaning of the song you should elaborate more on what you think is our worlds new way of thinking. I think that select amounts of people are being able to see the world in better or more 'whole" perspectives. America is going to have to change pretty soon. People are sick of commercials and the tendency of big businisses to dehumanize the consumers. I am thinking that our society has become SO materialistic (with very advanced materials like ps3 and plasma tvs) that people are finally realizing that this shit doesent make you happy no matter how nice or expensive it is. Do these materials make good substitutes for the separation of families when someone has to go to work. This system to me seems like it should bring itself down. What happens when spoiled kids arent happy as well as the person at work. But i know people who I could tell this too and they would call me crazy and negative and shit. Maybe this view will become more popular as my generation (im18) gains money and power. but im bout to go find some ganj holla.
