The Velvet Underground – Pale Blue Eyes Lyrics 16 years ago
The opening lines:

"Sometimes I feel so happy,
Sometimes I feel so sad.
Sometimes I feel so happy,
But mostly you just make me mad.
Baby, you just make me mad."

Are almost unbearably poignant to me. The idea that this is more about friendship than love just seems bafflingly vacuous. You would really have to seriously misread this song (or have very odd friendships indeed) to see it that way.

To me, this is a song about love, and the capacity for cruelty people have towards the ones they 'love'. IMO, the lines

"Thought of you as my mountain top,
Thought of you as my peak.
Thought of you as everything,
I've had but couldn't keep."

Relate to the way that people often fall more in love with a fantasy version of someone than with the actual individual themselves. The process of putting someone on a pedestal actually involves dehumanising them, turning them into a symbol or a prize to be won.

And Doda:

"That said, the lines about the mirror really intrigue me. I think he's saying that, if he were not biased towards her, and did not place her on a pedastal above himself- if he were able to understand and judge her objectively, as he does himself when looking in the mirror- their relatioship/ affair ending would be easier."

I think this is absoloutely spot on, and really insightful. Thanks, you've made a wonderful song even more fascinating.

A really great song, and a nice simple sentiment about taking comfort from the people who believe in you (i.e. the coach and the princess) even when you feel worthless.

Kings of Leon – On Call Lyrics 16 years ago
But in the first line it states "SHE said call me now baby, and I'd come a-running". It's obviously not just the guy running around for the girl.

To me the song implies a kind of mutuality, an equal relationship of give and take. "I'm on call, so be there" - i.e. I'm on call for you, so you be there for me. I like that idea way better than joeymoose's version.

Jack Off Jill – Spit And Rape Lyrics 16 years ago
I always though that this song was about being molested by a female perpetrator. There are other JOJ songs that seem like they might be about that as well, though not as explcitly as this one.
